Tanking the Foundation wall with Remmers MB2K+ flexible Tanking Slurry

- Part 3 - applying the tanking!! Just the small detail of digging out the entire building first, down the the trench fill foundations. The wall needed to be super clean so we went at it with the jet wash first. I also had to knock off any mortar snots to get down to a flat surface. There were loads of gaps in the blockwork/trench blocks where the brick layers hadn't put any mortar in the perp joints so that needed filling first. I done that with mortar using rapid cement and also put a fillet at the junction between the blocks and foundation. Next came the Kiesol waterproofing liquid quickly followed with Sulfatex Rapid filler & tanking Grout for a wet on wet application at 2mm thick as a scratch coat. Then 2 coats of MB2K building water proofer at 2mm thick each, applied in the dark! Something I didn't film was using a brush to make sure the fillet was coated after the first coat of MB2K.

Here they use primarily the dimpled plastic sheeting fastened at the top of the wall with a nail gun. Plastic runs down the wall and to the outer edge of the footings where the gravel is poured on top of a properly placed 4” plastic perforated drainage pipe set at the level of the bottom of the footing. Saves loads of work and lasts many decades.
They did recommend the dimpled membrane over the top and installed like you said. However, I still needed a primary waterproof layer. It would have been belt and braces to do the extra membrane and even more money. Considering I don't actually have a basement and it's just a 'crawl space' that would never actually be accessible, I think what I've done, plus the French drain is more than enough. Bring on the monsoon! 😂
What you describe is a drainage membrane that only works on a sloping site. On a flat site, water rises and will simply rise up between the wall and dimpled membrane. As Aiden says, he still needed a waterproofing layer.
@@dgbucko what you are missing is the 4” drainage pipe is sloped down and away from the building to remove the water. This system does not require a sloped site.
the more layers of resistance that you have between water & structure equals water management the better the management the closer to true water proof results. good job.

Cant see a developer doing this somehow ... chuck some gravel over, sell, cash in, scarper.
Not sure about my neighbours up hill but my other neighbours have had damp and drainage issues. However, the way the building has been constructed means any issues would have been exacerbated. Yeah, I'm sure developers would have bodged it 🙄

Thanks mate, I've had to just deal with the rain and crack on dealing with the outside jobs. Soon I'll be back inside on the cartlodge...oh I've just remembered I still need to build the stairs 🤦♂️😂
Don't know if you'd be willing to give some advice? My mum had an extension done and all but two of the tradies she had around did a complete bodge job on pretty much everything. Her neighbours garden level is higher. What's happened is the builders built the foundation and brick wall slightly over and as it isn't square it sticks slightly into their garden, I'd say about 100mm or so. Because of this they've thrown on the soil against the wall and it's started to cause damp issues. In September I noticed that they'd done this and told my mum that it would cause damp issues, at this point she was low on money. So I did some reading and painted a bitumen on the wall and tried to stick some DPM along the wall like a wallpaper. I think it might have worked to some extent but she's now getting some damp as it's raining pretty much every other day in November/December. I've spoke to a bunch of builders who I've found to be registered under the council but obviously non of them are interested in coming anywhere near it. On told me to dig it out, brush it down and repeat what I did again but with a plastic sheeting. Someone else elsewhere online said to use a tanking slurry inside and then I think using some special plaster to plaster the wall flat if she wants to paint it. The builders put the damp course two bricks high in level with the house, however the soil comes up about six seven bricks, making it redundant. I've read that you can use a "tanking slurry" outside. But being honest with you I really don't understand it. I'm having to do this out of my own pocket and will have to DIY it myself. Therefore I find myself watching videos trying to understand it and gain some insight and information from it.

What's Building Control's take on all this? Are they making you do it before signing off, or is it just a personal choice?
They're none the wiser. Main contractor blagged them. An unfortunate sequence of events lead here and no one had foreseen any issues apart from me, once I properly assessed the situation. I'd rather address it now rather than take a massive gamble with damp and possibly structural issues in the future

@@combok660 that's the plan apparently, I was told by permaguard to do a scratch coat with the sulfatex so that's what I done. Normally a scratch coat gives the next layer a better bond but I don't actually think the mb2k+ needed it 🤷♂️
£234 for a 25 kg bucket. When you have more money than common sense applies here. Wtf magic potion, fairy dust this is....there are options way cheaper with the same effect. I guess the fool is not the one who's asking is the one that pays...
