  • The tailgate on a land cruiser 100 series gets pretty nasty over the years and creating something that can withstand the punishment of overlanding is a great DIY project. This thing only cost less than $50 in materials maybe a little more with the monstaliner but I had plenty of extra from the drawer build. There are commercially available versions, like TrekBoxx, just like this that are $200-300. The only thing I would change is would have hunted down some 1/2" birch so it would have had a more uniform finish.

I love the tailgate cover. It has held up so well and seems like it's factory. My carpet was nasty.

Thanks man! This is one of the mods I am proudest of since it cost so little, is a huge improvement, and the ones you can buy are very expensive.

Great video Chuck. Thanks! Can you please post the name and color of the paint you used. I have the same internal color. It looks like it matches really well.

Nice work! Would you say 1/2" is the right thickness for such a replacement to the tailgate cover?

I apologize for such a delayed reply! Thanks! Yep I think that is a prefect thickness.

Thanks and you're welcome! I created a poster board template and measured like a thousand times. I put holes in the poster board and mad sure everything was perfect then transferred to the wood. You could use cardboard too and it may take a few attempts. If that doesn't make sense let me know and I will try to explain it a little better.

Great job as always. Where did you get that transition plate cover that keeps stuff from dropping threw your tailgate

That is a factory piece of trim. You might be able to pick one up from a Toyota parts dealer. Thanks

You didn't happen to keep the template with measurements etc and what you used to secure the screws in place did you. Be great to sell it as a kit and let us buy your product. It'd help me out that's for sure!!
