As a german i cant quite understand why it is called "baltic sea" why cant it just be like "ostsee" in german which means "east sea" i mean we already have the north sea wouldnt it be just logical?
Maybe it's the same reason why München is Munich in Englisch. I never got the point, why a town's name needs to be changed. Like we say New York, because it's New York and not (as translated to German) Neu York. But as far as I know, it's the same in all languages... who knows... :)

The Romans called it mare suebicum, 'cause the suebians were living in this area of Germania. (The Suebians these days on the other hand live in southern Germany, there is a linguistic connection, but not a cultural.) The Estonians call it Läänemeri, and that means Western Sea...you sea, errr see, language is build different and most of the time there are explanations, which rest on historical circumstances.

Oh by the way, the east frisian islands are called like that because the west frisian islands are dutch. Oh and Bodensee is easy to remember in german! Boden means Bottom/floor and thats where it is located! Big lake at the Bottom of the Map! :D

I had been living in Stralsund for 6 years. Such a lovely, tiny town! I had also been living on Rügen for about 7 years. So, if you are heading to Germany in the future, I recommend going to Rügen and/or Stralsund... It's worth it!
Pommern is actually a Polish historical region. It's name comes from the slavic words for "land on the sea", and Germany's part is much smaller. It's historical capital was Stettin, now a Polish city.

Sweden owned part of Pomerania between 1630 and the end of the Napoleonic wars in 1815. So Sweden had that territory for a longer time than Norway has been independent. Pretty cool

I had been living in Stralsund for 6 years. Such a lovely, tiny town! I had also been living on Rügen for about 7 years. So, if you are heading to Germany in the future, I recommend going to Rügen and/or Stralsund... It's worth it!

Pommern is actually a Polish historical region. It's name comes from the slavic words for "land on the sea", and Germany's part is much smaller. It's historical capital was Stettin, now a Polish city.

Sweden owned part of Pomerania between 1630 and the end of the Napoleonic wars in 1815. So Sweden had that territory for a longer time than Norway has been independent. Pretty cool
