Didn't they end that saying" the arh-a-tech sketch" pointing up, and repeating that over and over and "up there" before it cuts up to the room where thus clip starts. They are still down there yelling then he tells them to shut up, they say sorry, and he dumps a pail of water on them?
Shocking looking back at this when you consider the disaster at Grenfell Tower which erupted into flames and because of the cladding which was flammable led to the deaths of many residents .
It wasn't just an awkward or goofy handshake... that was the satire! The architect who had a design that deliberately killed residents was rejected, and no further consideration was given to him because he wasn't a Freemason. The architect with a dodgy design that would almost certainly kill all the residents anyway was accepted because of his cost-cutting, and the fact it was revealed by the secret handshake that he was a Freemason 'Brother' all along. In the decades following this sketch, deaths in buildings like these ended up happening. As somebody else in the comments has mentioned... look up 'Greenfell Tower Fire'. P.S.) When you get around to reacting to Blackadder, Stephen Fry's characters can go a bit mental and ranty at times... especially one episode in Blackadder The Third, and in the courtroom scene about his dead pigeon in Blackadder Goes Forth.
I recommend the restaurant complaint sketch. You'll never complain about dirty cutlery again...... Then there's bicycle repair man, or maybe Doug and Dinsdale Piranha. The list goes on....
John Cleese once described his character on Fawlty Towers and being someone who thought hotel management would be a wonderful job if it wasn't for the guests. ;)
I had forgotten the architect sketch. It is a great one. And now for something completely different. I had forgotten the architect sketch. It is a great one.
Arguement is a great short one, or Philosophy Football Match is a bit longer. I think you'll like the Piranha Brothers as well, series of sketches done like a documentary on Krays style London gangsters. Top silliness
Victor Meldrew's (played by Richard Wilson) has some epic rants in 'One foot in the grave'. If your' not familiar with this series then it's about a grumpy old man ranting at modern life. Great fun! Fun fact: the theme of this sitcom was written and performed by one of the Python's, Eric Idle.
The problem with clips of Monty Python's Flying Circus is that the sketches often aren't self-contained, they all ran together, often with a lot of callbacks, and many don't have a punchline (and they were proud of that fact). The Gumby men at the beginning noisily introduced the sketch but then carried on and interrupted the sketch itself. The Freemason bit at the end was followed up by the next sketch, about ways to identify a mason.
Monty Python's Flying Circus is best viewed as whole episodes instead of loose sketches as sketches tend to blend into each other wwith references to other sketches and characters. Some of the jokes play with the format of the sketch show.
Monty Python often merged one sketch into the next, even though they were totally dissimilar. in this case, the preceding sketch was about the Gumbies, who continued making noise after the next sketch started, so had the bucket of water thrown on them. Another unlikely merging of sketches is the very funny 'Dead Parrot Sketch' that morphs into the 'Lumberjack Song'. Worth looking out for.
Don't forget The Cheese Shop Sketch. John Cleese has to have the best memory in the world to pull it off. If you want to do something longer, then you can't do better than the film Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl. My all time favourite by them is in it and if you like physical comedy, you will love it, it's named, Monty Python - History of the Joke.
Y'know, I was watching the Best Sketch Ever video (GOOORN), and I saw Boomer's reaction to it, and I thought to myself "y'know what sketch I reckon Boomer would love? The Architect sketch." And lo and behold. And yes, in many ways, this was the genesis of Basil Fawlty.
I know what Boomer was really here for was Cleese, but just to clarify the confusing opening that's because the sketch was slightly truncated. The programme begins with a card and voiceover that states "The BBC would like to apologise for the next announcement." You then see all five Pythons (sans Gilliam) dressed as Mr. Gumby, an iconic and beloved recurring Monty Python character who represents a working class idiot. Here is what happens next: Gumbys, in unison: Hello, and welcome to the show. Without more ado, our first item is a sketch about architects. Called...the Architect sketch! PAUSE Gumbys, louder: The architect sketch! PAUSE Gumbys, louder: the architect sketch! *they point to the top of the building* Up there! Up there! Up there! CUT TO CHAPMAN IN OFFICE WITH PALIN AND JONES. This is where Boomer comes in with the Gumbys still audible from the window shouting "Architect sketch!" and "up there!" at the tops of their lungs. He is annoyed and yells at them to shut up. Then they start shouting sorry and Chapman pours the bucket of water on them. And so on and so forth.
Self-defense against fresh fruits is a classic Cleese skit worth checking out (in addition to all the great recommendations in the comments), but make sure you react to the full version from the tv show, not many of the cut versions around that is missing half of the skit
Good Ranters: Jonathan Pye - News Reporter Rhod Gilbert - Any Stand up comedyshow John Cleese -Python sketches, Clockwise movie Victor Meldew - One foot in the grave Ray Winston - Actor etc.
Python is so good. Check out "and now for something completely different' they redid their greatest hits into a movie, mainly to introduce it to america.
If you want to see a truly unhinged Cleese performance I highly recommend 'Monty Python Fish Licence', my all time favourite Python character, Mr Praline', attempts to purchase a licence for his pet fish, Eric.
I always find it interesting how Cleese, who this is quirky but terribly analytical man, could produce such total red-faced boiling-mad outrage. It's clearly hiding in there somewhere.
An American comedian who did "angry meltdown" well was Sam Kinnison... not quite up to Chernobyl-level by John Cleese, but a good Three-Mile-Isle-style...
Al Murray, from time to time will go on some epic rants that come close to Cleese but not all the way. Thinking about it now, Cleese is most certainly the king of ranting.
John Cleese was a very angry man for a large part of his life. It took years of therapy and three failed marriages before he overcame it. His stories about his mother tell the tale. Imagine a female John Cleese suffering from recurring bouts of deep depression who threw tantrums when anything upset her, but she had that sense of humor. One time when she was feeling particularly down, John told her that he knew of a man in a nearby town who would come over and kill her on request. There was a long silence and then she broke into laughter.
Steve from the BBC comedy Coupling has a few good rants. Here are two of them Steve Cushion Rage - Coupling th-cam.com/video/Lp0-8Ibkczc/w-d-xo.html Steve Wants a Lock on the Toilet - Coupling th-cam.com/video/IezFzsZwxwE/w-d-xo.html
The guys in Gumboots and handkerchief hats were The Gumbies, a Python reoccurring set of characters.
And the previous sketch that ran into this one.
Didn't they end that saying" the arh-a-tech sketch" pointing up, and repeating that over and over and "up there" before it cuts up to the room where thus clip starts. They are still down there yelling then he tells them to shut up, they say sorry, and he dumps a pail of water on them?
@@jimwilcox2964 They say : "The architect sketch".
My favourite cleese rant is at the end of the bicycle repair man sketch.
'Argument clinic' , 'Funniest joke' and 'Philosophy football'....some of my favourites
No they're not.
@@briwire138 Yes they are!
My favorite Monty Python skit. "Provided the tenants are of light build and relatively sedentary..." is always what gets me.
Shocking looking back at this when you consider the disaster at Grenfell Tower which erupted into flames and because of the cladding which was flammable led to the deaths of many residents .
Just another example of Monty Python predicting the future. Along with the smug vegan restaurant, and "I want to be woman".

The explosion at the end is such perfect comedic timing.
I've always wanted that model. You can see him working the controls and it looks way too much fun to play with
John Cleese in Fawlty towers "disciplining" his car!
They never did enough episodes of fawlty towers 😔
Specsavers made a series of tv commercials with John Cleese in them, based on that scene. Brilliant stuff.
Rod Gilbert's rants are some of the absolute best.
"YOU EXCREMENT!" completely out of nowhere is top tier Cleese rage.
You'll love "Bicycle repair man" :)
I think with the handshake theyre making fun of the freemasons
Cleese Anger Level 100! THE DIRTY FORK!
I recommend the restaurant complaint sketch. You'll never complain about dirty cutlery again......
Then there's bicycle repair man, or maybe Doug and Dinsdale Piranha. The list goes on....
I like how Cleese's face goes red when he is ranting.
That Ghastly lamp or whatever is awesome, love that👌😂
If you like John Cleese getting angry you will like THE DIRTY FORK SKETCH if you've not already done it.
Monty Python's 'Restaurant Sketch' is a classic early version of Cleese-gone-mad
Probably pointed out already, but the "awkward handshake" was a MASONIC joke I think.
John Cleese once described his character on Fawlty Towers and being someone who thought hotel management would be a wonderful job if it wasn't for the guests. ;)
I had forgotten the architect sketch. It is a great one. And now for something completely different. I had forgotten the architect sketch. It is a great one.
You act quick 😮. Good job this was made years ago. It wouldn’t work now. Reminds too many people of Grenfell Tower
Definitely made me think of it! 😮
Perhaps, but the best place to find inadvertent anticipation of that disaster is Thunderbirds (1965).
Volume and intensity? Brian Blessed :-) Plus he's hilarious.
Arguement is a great short one, or Philosophy Football Match is a bit longer. I think you'll like the Piranha Brothers as well, series of sketches done like a documentary on Krays style London gangsters. Top silliness
Doug and Dinsdale Piranah and their archnemesis Spiny Norman.
Absolute switched-on parody of life's silliness.
Block of flats = apartment building.
They're usually not fitted with rotating knives (but I suppose there's always the odd exception).
Unless it's in certain parts of London, in which case they're the rule rather than the exception.
If it wasn't so tragic, you could almost apply some of the meeting comments to the commissioning of Grenfell Tower...

Those guys with the rolled-up trousers, braces & knotted handkerchieves are the ‘Gumbys’.
Parody of someone?

My brain hurts too!
@@gamleskalle1 - I don’t think so. Although it used to be quite common to see folk at the seaside wearing knotted handkerchiefs on their heads.

I'm just surprised they thought they needed to put 'SATIRE' on the screen, since this was way before Grenfell.
Cleese can certainly shout, but check out Michael Palin in 'Marching up and down the square'..
No, no, no! You can't pause the sketch there! There's a flock of business men hopping down the street with their trousers down!
I'd suggest watching full episodes of the flying circus, they work so well seen as a whole and better than separate sketches :)
OK King Boomer. You must have seen Basil Fawlty beating his car!
This was the winning bid for Grenfell Tower.
MY SON AND I SAW JOHN CLEESE AT CARPENTER CENTER ABOUT 14 YEARS AGO. ONE NIGHT WITH HIM M...HE WAS HILARIOUS😂😂😂😂
Well done .The funniest sketch I have seen from M. P. is ( the argument ) it's really clever .
OK, here's another. For an amazing rant from John Cleese, look up The Dirty Fork. You'll love it!
Good rants are Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi) in The Thick of It.
The only one with the same quality of rants and anger, that comes to mind is Rhod Gilbert.
Don't forget The Cheese Shop Sketch. John Cleese has to have the best memory in the world to pull it off. Another good one with John being angry is Self Defence against fruit ! xx
My favourite is when Basel when Basel Faulty thrashes his car in the Gourmet night episode of faulty Towers.
That Woody Wood Pecker was epic.
Reportedly, John Cleese's dad changed their family name from Cheese, so that gives a hint to the pronunciation.
Whenever i need a laugh, i watch a photo of the Gumbies. it just cracks me up no matter what

I'll second Rod Gilbert as a top notch ranter. His _attempting to buy a sandwich on a train_ probably being my favourite.
This was made in the era of urban renewal, ie putting people in tower blocks, to replace the terrace housing.
Cleese doing set design for level 1 of tomb raider lol 😅
'Your Tony Jacklin golf clubs'.......look it up.
Top rants...Malcolm Tucker from The Thick Of It
Strangely he also had the best voice for Tom Tom sat navs back in the day.

Graham Chapman was also great at rants, he and Cleese wrote their Python material together.
Have you seen the Minehead bye-election sketch were John Cleese plays the role of Mr Hilter the National Bocialist candidate.
Have you seen’Monkey Dust’? An animated series from the early 2000s
Have you done blackadder? Awesome series especially final one
Sounds like the Cecil Hotel, I think you are forgetting David Mitchell, Lee Mack, Dylan Moran, Frank Kelly & Greg Davis
