Great reaction! But unfortunately, you missed the continuation of the sketch *The Lumberjack Song*
I think the segue into the Lumberjack Song was in the film (And Now for Something Completely Different) version of the sketch.
The jokes breaking the fourth wall were just genius. For example when he stepped into the "Bolton" pet shop he picked up the cage hed left in the previous "shop".
" One day lad, all of this will be yours "..." What, the curtains " ?
“She’s got hugeee…. tracks of land”
@@shawnurch8755 lol
@shawnurch8755 just like blazing saddles, when the police turn up " Frank " ! 😆
He’s already done Holy Grail, about a year ago.
"Look, you're marrying Princess Lucky. So, you'd better get _used_ to it!"
Now go for Python's 'Argument Clinic' and 'Upperclass Twit Of The Year'.
That wouldn't be a good idea, would it?!
@@jimb9063 Yes it would!
Upper class twit of the year is brilliant!!!
@@jimb9063 Yes, it would!
John Cleese repeated the dead parrot sketch at graeme chapman’s funeral - except he referred to graeme chapman as ‘dead, deceased, fallen off ‘is perch’. Then he told everyone that graeme chapman was a ‘freeloading b.stard’, because - as he explained at the funeral - if he didnt say that, graeme chapman would be very disappointed with him. The speech is hilarious.
If you havent seen Fawlty Towers, watch it with Queen Boomer. It stands the test of time. Its only 6 perfect episodes. And im pretty sure you will identify with the scene where Basil’s car breaks down!
Oh, and pro-tip, keep your eyes out for the brief glimpses of the naughty schoolboys who repeatedly change the hotel sign across episodes. My favourite sign change is ‘Farty Towels’.
'Hello Polly, I've got a nice cuttlefish for you!"
Monty Python - Self-Defense Against Fruit
great one!
Aha! There is one more movie.. It's called And Now For Something Completely Different. It's not a movie with a story really, more like a feature length sketch episode, where they remade some of their earlier work to release to the US market. They didn't change anything, it just looks better, and some sketches, such as How to defend yourself against fresh fruit, are even better. I mention this one in particular because it has Mr Cleese at full screaming madman capacity. It's a feature length episode of the show which gives you the full picture, and you'll see the transitions between sketches which are a big part of the flow, and also has the whacky animation that you've seen in the intros of the movies playa bigger part. Some sketches don't have an ending, so that General or Sgt. Major character is one that shows up every now and then when things get too silly.
Also Live at the Hollywood Bowl.
Not sure if it's classed as a separate movie but The Crimson Permanent Assurance was a short film they did as a prelude to The Meaning Of Life.
Also jabawoky
And Yellow beard!
The life of Brian ?? or was that banned in the states ?
As I said the other day, this aired very late on Sunday evening in the late 60s, just before close-down, on the 2nd BBC channel [ and there were only 3 channels, when you considered ITV !]. Most of the 'adults' had gone to bed, to do 'adult' things. It was different in TV & comedy terms in much the same way that Elvis & Little Richard & Jerry Lee must have been to music [ actually before even my time ]. The way sketches just segue into each other, with no introduction, or even just barge into each other was mind boggling & jaw dropping. Everything was just so 'off the wall', and without convention, that when Eric Idle says " ...and now frontal nudity ..." you honestly didn't know what to expect - and they just might have ......
55 years and slightly more on, it starts to look a little tame, because so many have taken up the baton & run with it. But, its impact at the time, and the legacy cannot be denied.
The guy who plays the pet shop owner, Michael Palin, subsequently travelled the world making documentaries about his journeys in his own inimitable and often witty style. For example he attempted to travel around the world in 80 days without flying, also travelling from the north pole to the south pole in as straight a line as possible, flying when only absolutely necessary; also attempting to visit every country that borders the Pacific Ocean. I think that it took him well over a year to finish that journey; and several other subsequent programmes of that nature were made too, eg travelling across the Sahara Desert, visiting North Korea etc. 👍👍👍
Palin got to meet the Dalai Lama who was a fan of his travel shows.
I met Michael Palin a few times as he would do book signings for each travel book he released. I can assure you he is as nice and genuine a person as you see him on those travel programmes.
Just remembered 2 more. Jabberwocky and the unofficial movie written by Graham and has the Python crew, a movie called Yellowbeard. Also has Cheech and Chong in it.
I,m sure someone will have already recommended the " the lumberjack song" but if they have,nt then I will
i am a lumberjack and i am ok, ......!
I was wondering what happened to that.
@@CyberBeep_kenshi he works all night and sleeps all day!
It’s supposed to follow the dead parrot sketch, “I didn’t wanna work in a pet shop.. etc”
One of my mates showed me this when we were younger, Daniel. He now goes by Natalie.
‘Four Yorkshiremen’ is a classic sketch
KB: I'm assuming there's a dead parrot involved.
Me: No, no, it's just restin'.
My favourite is the Fish-slapping dance.
Python/Python-related:
And now for something completely different (1971)
Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl (1982)
Yellowbeard (1983)
A Fish called Wanda (1988)
Fierce creatures (1997)
I love what you’re doing, man.
Much love from Sweden.
And Now For Something Completely Different is also a Monty Python Movie, in a sense. Its really just a feature length sketch episode, where they remade or added on to previous sketches they did before.
The first film they did "And now for something completely different " was a compilation of all the best sketches from there t.v show including the one you have just watched (dead parrot sketch which ends by going straight into the lumberjack song !) So if you want to see the best sketches in one go it may be a more suitable option than watching all the series or going through chopped up low quality sketches one by one and you'll probably be able to find the film on TH-cam or they also did a live stage show of the sketches in America which was recorded and put out on video that was called " Monty python live at the Hollywood bowl !
The idea came when John was reading a thesaurus. He came upon the the entry for words and phrases that are synonyms for death/dead/etc..
Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl. Another good watch. And Now For Something Completely Different is yet another one.
Before they were Monty Python's Flying Circus they had a show called Do Not Adjust Your Set.
All good to watch!
'And Now For Something Completely Different' was the first Python movie, just a compendium of their TV sketches.
A lot of people seem to forget the existence of the 1977 film Jabberwocky, directed by Terry Gilliam and staring Michael Palin... And of course there's the film Brazil also directed by Terry Gilliam and staring Michael Palin... Although they aren't Monty Python films, they are weird as f**k and worth a watch.....
In case you never knew, one of their tennants was to never end a sketch on a punchline. Not sure if they totally kept to it but that's why so many sketches drift into each other
I think the Dead Parrot sketch will grow on you. I think it was Palin who wrote it, and he got the idea from his car mechanic. He noticed that no matter what went wrong with his car the mechanic would just say "Oh that's normal for that type of car". Even if he'd just bought it new and after three months the door fell off, the mechanic would say "Ah yes, that's what happens with that make. After three months the door drops off. Common fault with that car".
The good thing about Python is that you can watch the same sketches over again and even though you know what's coming you still laugh.
The sketch where the pythons have aliens turning Englishmen into Scotsmen is hilarious.
That was great. It was one of the few sketches that ran for the whole 30-minute show.
I’ve seen this sketch more times than I can remember but only now have I realised the basic absurdity of the parrot being a *Norwegian* blue.
Same. But it's not that strange - we have green parrots all over London now.
This was my Dad's favorite Python sketch. I'm partial to the Spanish Inquisition myself.
I loved 'The Bishop' A Church of England Production. 🤣
@@2030soonbehere I just found out recently that "The Bishop" was based on an old TV series called "The Baron." There are some episodes on TH-cam.
Also, the "Attila the Hun Show" sketch was a parody of a short-lived sitcom, "The Debbie Reynolds Show." The theme songs are identical.
@@bobbuethe1477 Good to know. I remember The Baron. I'll take a look on here. Bring some good times memories back.
I didn't expect that
8:10 It's not just the same shop for us, he didn't bring the cage with him and it appeared in the Bolton shop. This is just too silly.
I believe you got the wrong sketch, The Lumberjack sequence follow the popular version.
The greatest purveyors of comedy absurdity ever. A British institution🇬🇧👍😂
Never mind a stinkin' parrot!...
ALBATROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(it's a bloody sea bird!) :D
Oh and there kinda IS another on, try Jabberwocky (a half Monty Python movie, because half the cast created it and starred in it, but similar setting to the movies you've seen)
Cheers KB!
Oh and and and...
Terry Gillian movies (The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and Time Bandits) very Monty Python-esque.
Right, I'm off back to Ipswich now.
Here in Australia people still quote Monty Python lines during daily life.
Knowing this sketch you have to watch John Cleese at Graham Chapman's funeral. It's a must see.
This is basically their best and most well known sketch.
Also check out ministry of silly walks, argument clinic, bruce.
I heard one the Pythons say that they rarely had punchlines in their sketches. It was much easier to just segway into the next sketch.
The dead parrot rant is pure poetry in comedy form. I love these Monty Python reactions. Thanks King Boomer 😄
Yeah, the way the humour just takes a turn in your face is so hilarious. It's a craft.
The best version is the live one at the policeman’s ball. Michael Palin can’t hold it together and the parrot bashing is a lot longer 😅
"And now for something completely different" is another movie of theirs.
The sketch on deceasedness has become british folklore , often referenced when anything results in a termination of livability, eg when scrapping a car , or fridge
In 1988 the Liberal Democrats adopted an image of a flying bird as its new party logo. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher made a speech in which she referred to the logo as a “dead parrot”, and she quoted a few lines from this sketch. Mrs Thatcher famously had no sense of humour, and she was of the earlier generation who were not familiar with popular culture references. Her speech-writing advisers showed her this sketch, and she didn’t get it. They had to do a lot of persuading to make her agree to having the reference in the speech.
"Pining for the Fjords? What kind of talk is that?!"
If you haven't seen it yet, try the New Gas Cooker Sketch, featuring John Cleese, camping it up on a chaise lounge. He's taken over "the whole RAF Ola Pola!" 😉😉
You simply must watch Flying Lessons, Argument, and Silly Walks. Oh, and Self-Defence Against Fresh Fruit!
Monty Python - Bicycle Repairman.
Jabberwocky is a close relative…I recommend that, a classic in its own right.
If you want to watch more Monty python stuff then I highly recommend their live show on the Hollywood bowl. Really funny compilation of their sketches done to a live crowd. There is also their recent performances in the O2 arena, but it's not quite as good since due to their age.
Now that you've seen this you might appreciate Graham Chapman's eulogy by John Cleese. See the longer version. You might cry. You'll certainly laugh.
We all know all the words off by heart.
Boomer you should do the Argument Clinic one next 😂
No he shouldn't.
@@clivenewman4810 Yes, he should! 😜
@@Wolf-ln1ml😆
Sorry, is this an argument?
@@oilyplinth I've already told you.
Monty's movie 'Now for something completely different'. Its some of their best sketches made bigger into a movie length feature. Also, 'Monty Python live at the Hollywood Bowl.
This sketch is so funny. I can't help but cheer and then laugh when Bolton is mentioned as it's my hometown and I live here lol.
Dead parrott and Ministry of silly walks are surely the minimum requirement for watching monty python 😄
The Monty Python films that came later were generally far more polished, this sketch came from the time when they were just bordering on unhinged. :) As far as films go, did anyone mention "Live At The Hollywood Bowl"? Exactly what it sounds like.
There is another mockumentary about the" Ruttles" which is a thinly veiled take on the famous Liverpool group and the record label. The only one that is up there with them is "This is Spinal tap". I love both of them.
As one of the "Python Generation", born in 1952 and who saw this live, it has to be said that, like many "wacky, zany" shows, a lot of it was self-indulgent nonsense. Everything after 5:15 , for example. We only remember the Good Bits, though 🙂
Apparently, this sketch was born from Cleese taking his car to a repairman and the repairman repeatedly refusing to admit there was nothing wrong afterwards when it still had problems(paraphrasing here).
Thumping the parrot on the table and giving it a little throw into the air kills me every time.
When I get a cold caller/scam caller, wanting to speak to the bill payer/business owner, I always tell them 'he's dead'. If they say, 'I'm so sorry.' I always say, 'It's okay: I never liked him anyway.' If they persist in wanting to speak to the owner after I've said I'm dead. I recite this sketch, swapping parrot with business owner of course.
The Cheese shop, is another good MP sketch. Time Bandits and A Fish Called Wanda are 2 great MP movies.
They were truly original. Absolutely brilliant comedy. So many great sketches.
Do the Argument Sketch next! Cleese and Palin at their best. It's hilarious!
The fact that Python was so silly is what makes it funny in its own way...there's nothing like it now..its all canned laughter these days.
John Cleese has a movie "How to irritate people" from 1969
There's a version of this sketch where they segway into the lumberjack sketch. ;)
Monty Python live at the Hollywood bowl has a mixture of their sketches
Monty Python were beaten to being 'kings of random' by Spike Milligan's "Q". Rumor has it that the night/week before the first Python show aired, they all sat down to watch Q and thought that they would have to do a re-write as Spike had got there before them.
Spike Milligan was doing that years before them, they knew his work.
@@Brookspiritgrew up learning to read being taught by Spike Milligans book of Silly Verse… the man was a genius 👍
😂😂😂... Your reaction to 'the frontal nudity' 🤣🤣🤣
You must watch Monty Python live at the Hollywood Bowl. It’s hilarious
A fish called Wanda not a Monty Python film but just as good
This, and Clockwise.
There’s yellow beard , time bandits ,splitting heirs , fish called wander and nuns on the run to name a few with must of Monty python cast in them ❤
Try the Cheeseshop sketch, the Confuse-a-Cat sketch, or the Bycicle Repair Man sketch. Also there's the World's Funniest Joke ...
A great semi-python movie is Time Bandits. It's a fun comedy directed by Terry Gilliam and John Cleese and Michael Palin are in it too.
Plus Sean Connery, Shelley Duvall, Jim Broadbent and Peter Vaughan (Growty in Porridge, Master Aemon in game of Thrones) amongst others.
You may want to try the films, Erik The Viking, The Jabberwokcy, And Baron Munchuosen, A fish Called Wanda, Feirce Creatures, Splitting Heirs these all have involvement by the Pyhon team.
You always enjoy the more surreal stuff Like Monty Python and Vic and Bob, you should really react to Vic and Bobs TV shows Vic Reeves Big Night Out, The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer and Bang Bang it's Reeves and Mortimer as you'd absolutely love them, also give Mighty Boosh a go which is the show which launched Noel Fielding's career who played Richmond in The IT Crowd, Matt Berry was also in it who's one of your favourites.
I think you missing him walking out the original shop leaving the parrot cage on the floor. Then when he gets to the new shop in 'Bolton' the cage is still on the floor!
'The Cheese Shop' is just as silly
There is a lot of Monty Python things beyond just movies.. Like.. Stage sketch-show and.. perhaps in particular the entire full "Monty Python's flying circus" Sketch show.
Now you have seen this version definitely watch there last ever show from about 6 years ago live, its there last time ever doing this sketch and its amazing
I love MP's sport of fish slapping - legend
I saw the Monty Python gang at the O2 in London a few years ago - Terry Jones kept forgetting his lines because of his dementia and the show descended into chaos in typical Python style - hysterical
It's pronounced Monty Pythun not Pythonn
Love the channel
Realated to Python - Do Not Adjust Your Set ; The Frost Report; Rutland Weekend Television
All these years and never remember that I live in Notlob...How funny is that?
PS, Stuff Ipswich, relegation next season!
It's a less known one but you really need to watch their "Johan Gambolputty" sketch. It's gonna make you laugh as much as it's going to impress you.
that sketch is very strange as it usually ends with the lumberjack song but I still appreciate it.
please have a second part of this with the missing piece or it will be incomplete.
Fish Called Wanda is kinda of a MOnty Python movie :D
yes this is the stretched version presumably filmed for a stage performance the original Dead Parrot Sketch segues into the I'm a Lumberjack musical sketch
6:39 Christ. I never knew there was a word for that. Who's of thought you could get an English lesson from a comedy sketch.
I saw the dead parrot sketch live at the Opera House in Manchester, England. Unfortunately I was seated way up in the gods, so although I can say that the creature was definitely dead (stuffed I believe), for all I could tell it might have been a dead vole impersonating a dead parrot.
Have you heard Monty Python's Haggis Poem (aka Horace) yet? I wouldn't call it reactable, but it's probably worth a listen for your own amusement/disgust.
Dead parrot sketch should be followed by I'm a lumberjack all part of some sketch..
Not strictly Python but Terry Gilliam made some surreal movies such as Time Bandits and Brazil which you might want to check out both feature some of the Pythons.
Often overlooked but Michael Palin went on to make TV series Ripping Yarns after Monty Python; sort of what he did while John Cleese was making Fawlty Towers.
Golden Gordon, Tomkinson's Schooldays and Over The Andes By Frog were some of my favourites but they all have their moments.
Also there is another Python movie or rather directed by Gilliam, who directed several off the cuff movies, such as "Twelve Monkeys" with Brad Pitt and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" with Johnny Depp, but "Time Bandits" is also co-written by Python members and has John Cleese and Michael Palin in the cast, along with Sean Connery.. th-cam.com/video/0J27T4s3S94/w-d-xo.html
Yellowbeard is a semi-Python movie.
Monty Python sketches are amazing, but the links between them are hilarious too. It's weird how every other sketch show up until League of Gentlemen didn't really both creating a world for the sketches to take place in.
Monty python “fish slapping dance” and “deadly joke” 😅 also try Derek and Clive “at the races”
At school we could all recite the Dead Parrot Sketch, and always fell about laughing! I'm laughing again now! "This parrot is no more! It has ceased to be! It's expired and gone to meet its maker!.... This is an ex Parrot!!!" Ah, those were the days.
"I wish there were more Monty Python movies..."
Try Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl. It's essentially a live performance of some of their best TV sketches and, in my opinion, is the best way to experience Python's early material. The atmosphere generated by the live audience makes it all so much funnier.
Look for Ripping Yarns with Michael Palin
Now *this* is actually one of the top sketches from Monty Python.
"I wish there were more Monty Python movies"... I mean, there _are_ 45 episodes of Monty Python's Flying Circus, as well as the fantastic live show Monty Python Live At The Hollywood Bowl. Technically I suppose that And Now For Something Completely Different also qualifies as a movie of sorts, but since it is just a bunch of re-shot sketches from the TV show, you're probably better off just watching the TV show to be honest.
There are a lot of brilliant sketches that you can't really just watch as a 5 minute clip, because they are thoroughly embedded in the episode they originated in. Often they are connected to the sketches before and after in ways that are lost when viewed in isolation. In some cases a sketch will stretch across an entire episode, being returned to multiple times.
I’m astonished to see you reacting to this, because I would have assumed you already did it ages ago
Lumberjack song! I’m a lumberjack and I’m okay!
