That Guppy was birthed without her wings. Has the Flight LT flown anything "unwieldy"? um, handful/troublesome. r.e. alike to any heavy lifter, stovl or jet/rocket-assist?
@tiadaid It delivered the airframes from factories in Germany, Spain, France and the United Kingdom to the Airbus Final Assembly Hall in Toulouse, the Super Guppy is preserved on display outside the Airbus Headquarters at Toulouse Blagnac Airport in France.
Yeah I was quite disappointed in 25 mins of video, not once did they mention that Airbus used the SGT for many years before the original Beluga was built and even helped "rescue" the SGT when Aero Space lines was struggling financially. Also, the Beluga is far bigger than the SGT so not sure why he made that statement. The BelugaXL is even bigger. Still, great video about the NASA bird and if you haven't been to Wings over the Rockies, it's a great museum.
Super cool to hear about the legend Clay Lacy and his career he’s done so much for Aviation… every time I fly into the Clay Lacy FBO for work at Vannuys it’s the best, they treat all there customers in Aviation like aviators, wether you fly in a Cessna 150 or in a citation CJ3 they understand the passion of aviation and what there founder has done and that transcends into there passion of there employees to the way they operate.
I’m in my early 30’s and decided to use my GI Bill to go to AMT School, this channel has helped me share some cool insights with my class and my instructors now use these videos for short classroom lessons. Awesome stuff guys!
Having seen one of these on display in Europe, I can definitely say that it's amazing to see it compared to the A337 Beluga that frequents my local airport.
I used to live close to Bruntingthorpe where SGT #1 used to live. The sadness of what happened to her is only matched by the sadness of what happened to the Mriya.
I work on T56/501s and I’ve always been curious about how the supper guppy’s water meth injection system is physically configured, this was a really cool video.
If you’re in Oregon instead of Colorado you can go to the Tillamook air museum and see the Mini-Guppy! It doesn’t fly anymore but it’s based on the same aircraft and you can walk around in it. My kids and I loved what a weird airplane it is.
Fascinating video! Had no idea just how many aircraft were mashed together to build this monstrosity. Just one note - you mentioned the An-225 as a potential alternative to the Super Guppy, though sadly that aircraft is no more... :(
There is still a not-completed airframe (about 75% complete) that could be finished. It's been considered by several parties both before the Mirya's destruction and since. It will almost certainly happen at some point as a matter of pride if nothing else. Having an interested party like NASA would definitely help push things along if existing options simply won't work.
Antonov isn't Russian. It's Ukrainian Aircraft manufacturer. Russia flies Antonovs, but the company is, and always have been Ukrainian. Also, If you want, Soviet... but not Russian. As educational institute, the facts should be correct.
The unlikely story of the original super cargo transport aircraft that helped America win the space race. Drop your Guppy questions/knowledge!

Shedding a single tear at the AN-225 mention.
It is a tragedy what the russians did to it. I imagine it was a pretty big asset to ukraine. Being the largest plane in the world and all.
@@quantumview8151Антонов Ан-225 Мрія "the dream". She will fly again one day.
Having it be called the RUSSIAN Antonov did the opposite....inexcusable today.
@@HylanderSB so damn offensive
The Super Guppy was also used by Airbus in the early years of the European aircraft maker before the Beluga was built.
Indeed, back then every Airbus were delivered on the wings of a Boeing!

Yeap indeed if you go down the Airbus Factory in Hamburg , there is a static Super Guppy parked up with a few other early Airbus aircraft.
No hydraulic boosted flight controls is crazy for a plane that size
I work on Artemis and got to coordinate a lift with the Super Guppy team earlier this year! Totally awesome folks who work on an incredible airplane.
I would see SG many times when I was at Ellington....until you see it in person you cannot comprehend its size

7:15 it’s cool to hear more about Von Braun’s contributions to aerospace after his absorption by the US lol
If interested read a Bio of Braun. His life might not be what you think
better the US got him than the USSR

It is a fun tradition to name this type or aircraft after bulbous sea life.
Curious what the turbo- prop engines were rated at ( shp), as well as what was the usable storage space??
I saw it in El Paso last week!

Holy smokes Clay Lacy! I've known him for his Lear jets. I've seen him many times at Skytrails, sitting at the captains table.
Very interesting. Thanks!
I'm a simple being; I see a 26-minute long documentary on the Supper Guppy, I click...
I flew on the NASA SG back in the late 80s moving contracted load. Landings were interesting.
Obviously made before the AN225 was blown up.

@@sigmahyperion955 Great point. We can only hope!
Yeah, fuNckin russians
guarded and fueled the AN-124, never saw the 225
Well, no, we don't have the 225
yeah, but the blueprints survive. 124 is a good platform too. just slap two extra engines and stretch the fuselage, and you are good :D

Came to the comments to point this out. Especially with the current invasion happening there I feel it's important to recognize Ukrainian history.
Also here for this. This is not an error that a supposedly national caliber production team should be making.
Scaled Composites would make an interesting bid for a custom replacement of the Super Guppy..... Also...Antonov is a Ukrainian company...
Why don't they just get a 747f?
This woman sounds like she is talking to pre-schoolers
she is
It is a Pilot and an old school communicator, for me, it sets the tone right to this channel!
"The russian Antonov 124 and 225"? Are you serious?
