  • Novice Jeffrey Hagiogrēgoritēs, who will be graduating from Saint Photios Orthodox Theological Seminary with the Bachelor of Theology degree in May 2024, gave a riveting lecture at the Seminary entitled “What Has China To Do With Jerusalem?: An Exploration of Orthodoxy in Chinese Philosophy.”
In his lecture, Brother Jeffrey dives into ancient Chinese philosophy, Taoism, and Confucianism, by examining the Shang Shu, the Tao Te Ching, and the works of Confucius. Through analyzing these texts and the Church Fathers, Brother Jeffrey outlines the parallels between ancient Chinese philosophy and Orthodox Christian theology.
This video includes the full lecture presented by Brother Jeffrey, as well as the question and answer session.

Thank you very much for your presentation, Brother Jeffrey ☦️. My wife is native Chinese while I am American and have just recently been baptized (glory to God!). While my wife has been very supportive of my joining the Church, she has yet to devote much time to learn about and experience Orthodoxy. I hope that sharing your talk with her will allow her to identify a personally relevant connection between her heritage and the teachings of the Church. Thank you for providing a beautiful bridge between the Far and Near East!

I'm honestly astonished by this. I was talking with a friend via Twitter about my interest in Orthodoxy and that I sensed its appeal was rooted in my love (but limited knowledge) of Eastern Philosophy and Religion. I was actually reading some of Cao Cao's poetry and reading some of the Tao and felt a connection there with Eastern Orthodoxy.

Thank you very much for this enlightening and edifying lecture. Do you have a recommendation for a modern translation for Lao Tzu and Confucius that is fluid and accurate?

This reminds me of the book The Discovery of Genesis: How the Truths of Genesis Were Found Hidden in the Chinese Language
Book by C. H. Kang and Ethel R Nelson.
The book makes the claim that the stories of Genesis, Noahs flood, the garden, babel etc hidden in the characters of the Chinese language.
Also, the ancient Chinese were monotheistic and worshipped the God of Heaven, Shang Di. Interestingly the name that gentiles use in the old Testament for the One True God is "The God of Heaven" (seafarers in book of Jonah), similar to how the Proto Indo Europeans called God Sky-Father, Dyus Pater.
The ancient Chinese emporer would also perform a yearly sacrifice to Shang Di, called the border sacrifice which parallels how Noah and Abraham worshipped. In addition, in ancient Chinese temples there was no image of Shang Di, paralleling the Temple in Jerusalem not depicting God.

Sincerity = being genuine? Walking in truth?
The connection with spontaneity would be that you haven’t planned everything you’re going to do / say to try and manipulate a result. But you’re truly acting from the heart? Just a guess
