Freida, it's too cute that you start singing along with that musical clip... makes this video taboo now.

In the 50's mainstream women did a lot, visited with other housewives during the day, did play dates with their kids, volunteered for community things. They were totally allowed to join choires and things like that. They just weren't expected to get paying jobs outside of the home.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. In many ways the restrictions on Hasidic women are nothing like we saw even in the Victorian age. In some ways the community can be a throwback, but in other ways it is much more restricted.

@@FriedaVizelBrooklyn Yes, in Victorian times women were expected to be able to sing and play an instrument!

8:42 "The work of a Jewish mother"... "Tho home is a temple"... I was raised in a different religion, but the vocabulary and message of this gender identification are so similar it's surreal.

I know this: the Old Testament speaks so negatively about women's baldness. It's considered shameful. So much for the men claiming they have the Torah on their side!

Thank you Frieda. I have really loved watching your videos since I discovered the channel about a year ago. I became a baal Teshuva to Chabad, and I as a baal Teshuva sometimes I feel I get given a packaged presentation of frum life and culture. I am always looking for honest insights, which are acurate and not focusing too much on the good or the bad in the communities. I have found a wealth of this in you TH-cam content and I’m considering going for one of the tours of Williamsburg which you give (I’m living in Crown Heights). I wonder, what experience if any have you had with the Lubavitcher community?

Thanks for the comment! I've had very little experience with Lubavich. I'm learning here and there, but I feel like I'm not qualified to speak on Lubavich at all.

It seems to me that the men just want to have all the fun, the singing, the dances etc! But what about the women? Are the men scared that the women might just be better than them? So whats the problem then? Even the infamous Pearl got her spirituality through other means. None of these women are stating that they want to leave. Nor are we talking about neglecting the children. But once the children are at school, or your children are all grown up..................

Men always have to have women under their thumb. It doesn’t matter the religion, factions of any religion have these attitudes. People always have to have groups of people they look down on to make them feel better about themselves. It is even reflected in our current political climate. It is too bad the music group had to stop, but they have little choice because of the way the society is structured to keep the men in power and control. No disrespect,it’s just human nature.

This is very sad the woman cannot participate this is not how I see things were in the Bible example Miriam singing the song giving Glory to G-D for what HE did at the crossing of the Red Sea…😢 I know I do not understand this culture but it’s clear the men are taught not to see the beauty in woman as G-D created them to be. The Helpmate to the Male. ☹️

Miriam and the women sang but also used tambourines so that the men would not hear their voices clearly. Also, it wasn't one single voice that was being heard but a group of voices which many groups consider not a problem.
Among most Orthodox Jewish groups, lots of girls get together for a kumzits, whether they are Litvish or Lubavitch, or veltish frum. Frum girls and women have been putting on shows for other women and girls for over a half of a century! There is plenty of room for them all to be very creative. Some of them sing, some act, others work on the scenery while others direct or produce. Let's not forget the writers.
This Rabbi objecting to this music school and the things that were said is not in accordance with mainstream orthodox Judaism.

Men are taught to see the beauty in women when it's the time and place for it. When a man is looking to get married, the Talmud tells him to lift his eyes and look. Once he chooses a wife he is supposed to have eyes only for her. It's unacceptable for him to turn his head to look at other women. Women are not to be put on display like objects just to gaze at because they are attractive. It is demeaning and degrading.

There is an industry that caters to women. I often purchase heimesh videos for my daughter. Well lubavitch heimesh, def not Satmar heimesh.

Even The Tehillim were sung. Didn’t HaShem give musical gifts to all people? Is the first music heard by a child a “lullaby “? Enjoy your music Frieda!!!🎶🎹🎻Bill. Uk
