      a trick: you can watch movies at Flixzone. I've been using them for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.

    Yes, that's how it is on the 1176. For the attack and release "7," is the fastest at about 50 microseconds and "1," being the slowest at 1 millisecond. You can use this compressor on about anything and come up with a musical sound. I love it!

    Boy, this is an interesting throwback video. Back in 2011 it actually made sense to DIY 1176 clones. It really doesn't today. Pimarily because 1176 plugins have gotten good enough to do the job equally as well the hardware without much - if any - audible difference. Secondly; you can now easily purchase fully assembled hardware clones from lots of different companies that are electronically identical to the DIY kits - yet cost about the same. Unfortunately there really isn't as much incentive to going DIY on them anymore.

  • @amaurythewarrior
    @amaurythewarrior 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    this covers the topic very well i guess. but i think it's important as a beginner starting with cheap, simple projects, like stompboxes, maybe on turret boards, and making sure you can read the schematics ! first it's cheaper than buying pcbs, but it's also helpful the day you need to do troubleshooting ....

    Hairball Audio. Go for revision D (its the same the UA 1176LN and Purple Audio MC76/77 is based upon). The kit includes all you need except components. They are available via the BOM (bill of material). There is a link to mouser where you can basicly just "add to cart". Have fun :) And remember to check up on safety. You can die if wire wrongly or touch a charged capacitor. Good luck

  • @amaurythewarrior
    @amaurythewarrior 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    well from what i've found there are quite a few revisions you can find ... but i'd just go with the most popular if i'm to build it someday. the pcbs aren't hard to find ... but buying a kit might be less expensive in the end ...

    From the size of the board, it looks like you could have easily fitted two channels into a single RU... Any reason you built it as 1 channel/2RU? Seems like a massive waste of rack space to me.

  • @koekhapper
    @koekhapper 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice machines, I'm going to build one soon with some hairball parts.

    hey dude, i totally love this! i'd like to build one myself. i built a guitar fx pedal from an existing cit but nothing complicated. at least it would have been more complicated without a manual how to do it. i have absolutely no clue how to build such things but i want to do it soooo bad! could you give me some information on how to build one? are there kits / manuals? the right pcb board with "printed components" on it would be cool, i guess.

  • @gabriel_kyne
    @gabriel_kyne 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Okay, I love the idea of building my own compressor. I'm sure it would be a huge headache but also super fun. But, kits are expensive-- just $50-100 less than the price of a prefab clone like the WA76. What would I gain by building my own from, say, the Hairball Audio kit?

    • @dirkchurlish4074
      @dirkchurlish4074 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i reckon the hairball rev a sounds a little better than the warm. and the 500 series hairball kit is only $425, looks like. same ed anderson transformers and everything as their rackmount. edit: i'd be more interested in getting a pre-built hairball myself, but at the moment i'm getting very satisfactory blue stripe-y sounds out of this free plugin called Fetish by analog obsession, so it's hard to justify for me. and no, i definitely don't feel this way about all plugin/hardware compressor pairs. i reckon a vintage 1178 would have a specialness that i would not be able to get out of Fetish, though.

    • @ramencurry6672
      @ramencurry6672 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good question. For people who are good at soldering and building circuit boards, this would be an enjoyable experience. Personally I would just stick to the Warm Audio or similar type. In the future, if I’m feeling adventurous I would then build a DIY unit for something a little different.
