SDS Imports, the same folks who brought in the Lynx 12ga shotgun from China, is now importing a WWII era clone of the famous 1911A1 45 ACP pistol. SDS is having them made by Tisas of Turkey. The SDS 1911 A1 seems to be one of the better low cost 1911 pistols on the market. I compare the SDS 1911 A1 to an actual Colt made 1911A1 from WWII.

They had probably been through rebuilt programs and had mismatched parts, I was in the Army at the same time he's talking about and all original ones without incorrect slides and the what not were hard to come across at that point.
That's why the military started trials for new sidearms, they were faced with having to have new parts made because spares parts were pretty much exhausted at that point and it was either spend the money on new parts and initiating a massive rebuild program or updating to a more modern design.

@@dukecraig2402 One, about your M14 story, sucks he sold it before you all could experience it.
About the 1911s... yea the original intention with the interchangeability of parts was so they could put all the parts of the 1911s into a bucket and wash them, then replace them not worrying about matching them up. Odd that the very thing they wanted with the interchangeability was the same thing that nailed it's own coffin.
I'm kinda in the opinion of since those pistols were with the USMC during their defining moments of their force (Pacific campaign) it should be the official pistol of the Corps, even if they don't use it anymore. If there's any gun that speaks Semper Fi more than any other, it's the 1911 .45.

I put about 300rds through it today and then tore it down completely and examined all the parts with the numerous original GI parts that I have.
Every GI part fit perfectly in this SDS import. I agree with you about the Philippine 1911's. I refuse to work on them anymore. I just got tired of the hit and miss quality control and having to hand fit a great deal of the parts. This is much truer to form than both the Rock Island GI series and the Springfield GI series and at a savings of between $80 to $150.
I have been shooting 1911's for over 50 years and gunsmithing them for almost that long.
Your Colt 1911A1 did have the wide hammer spur up until about 1943 when Colt went with the narrow one.
I have never gotten hammer bite with any GI 1911 and I did not get it with this one either after over 300 rds. I do have small hands and that is the reason.
The magazine that came with my Tisas was a Mec-gar and was so marked and I found it to be excellent with no flex at all.
I feel that this 1911 A1 is by far the best value for the money with extremely good machine work and attention to detail.
Time and more rounds through it will tell me how it will hold up, but the quality of the steel seems just fine.
Thank you for your detailed and very honest review.

I carried a 60s era 1911 in the Army. I would have loved to own that pistol. It was like magic! I hit anything I pointed it at. I qualified expert with everything I got my hands on (except the M3A1) but the 1911 and I mean the one I was handed was an extension of my hand. My cousin has a Kimber, and it's a beautiful gun but it was nothing like that issue beater 1911. I used to have the serial number memorized but like everything else, it's faded away. It's probably in South America someplace now. I know a ton of them were sold to some south American armies.

As far as reliability is concerned, I'm going with Ken Hackathorn's statement on the lower ejection port (see his review of the Govt Classic). If reliability was a problem they would have lowered it before the A1 came out. It was lowered in the Govt models to allow the spent casing to eject without denting it. Reloaders had less work to do then.

The WWI 1911's had a wider spur. The A1's did away with them, but parts were mix-matched in service. My WWI Colt has a wide spur (it's not this wide but wider than the A1) and it has a longer spur than the Tisas. The knurling on the WWI is also much finer than the far more aggressive texture on the Tisas.

After handling it and seeing how the quality was noticeably better than the RIA, and after some quick Google-Fu, decided to buy it. $415 before taxes.
Glad to see I made the right choice. Saved about $70 which I can spend on ammo instead and got the better gun. I’ll probably upgrade the beaver tail to prevent the hammer bite and might paint the front sight, but other than that I’m just gonna enjoy it.

It is important to note I also get those same cuts from a USA made Walther PPK. I have fired the pistol with every kind of 1911 magazine I have without failures and I have fired five different types of hollow points without failures. This pistol out performs my Colt mark 4 series 70 with hollow points. I give the pistol two thumbs up.

This seems to be a growing trend as we find more customers own multiple models! We appreciate the support.

With them there 'Poor Sights' you sure did prove that you are a dang gummed good shooter. That gun killed a lot of enemy in WWI and WWII so it would be good foe a home defense gun as the ball ammo would go right thru the first thug and into the second! Thanks for the thorough review.

Heck yeah! Been looking at this for about two months. Been wanting one BADLY! Going to pick one up next week God willing! Love the review! But let me ask this, is there any concern about Turkey's steel used to make this clone, or is everything good to go?

And before I get burried in the comments, thought I'd let people know that there is a high quality Beretta 92 clone for $350-&400. The Girsan Regard functions just like the Beretta with most parts interchangeable. I really like it.

Couldn’t I just get a used beretta for the same price?
