    The Belle Chasse Tunnel seems like a historical artifact that ought to be preserved! I find it remarkable that you stay in Belle Chasse, including the hamlet, and pass the last traffic light for 66 miles! Hard to believe that there are only 5 stoplights in the whole parish! Thanks for your documentation of this fascinating area.

      Well, once you get below Woodland Highway, there’s really only one road, with short side streets. Plus the parish Highway that runs along the river in places, but that’s really just the old alignment of LA-23.

    Now you already know I'm 504RoadTrips biggest fan, but the music selection for this video is awesome!

    That is a neat tunnel. It seems short. Sad that is no longer in use and sealed off.

      It just crosses a canal that is about 500 feet wide at that point. I guess it outlived its usefulness.

      No. No you don't.
      But seriously, though, it's CLOSED! Goodbye, tunnel! I get to watch them build that new bridge every day and it's the best thing I've ever seen. Adios, Car Wash!

    Our family moved from Belle Chasse to Baton Rouge right after hurricane Camille passed. I see Balestra’s grocery store is there! My sibs and I attended BCHS from kindergarten till 1969, except for 2 years at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in ‘66 & ‘67. We lived at 123 Vogt Drive.

      Balestra’s existed under that name until just a few months ago. Breaux Mart bought them out near the end of 2021. I haven’t been in there since they changed the name.

    I KNEW YOU'D TAKE THE TUNNEL! Hell of a tease, 504! Get it while you can...I'm sure they'll replace it with something nice and concrete...Melbourne or Eau Gallie Causeways, anyone?

    • @504RoadTrips
      @504RoadTrips  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The project to replace it has already begun. They’re starting to prepare the areas where the approaches will be. I suspect it’ll be just like the LA-407 Lower Coast Algiers bridge over the same canal about a mile away, minus the 180° curve and roundabout.

    The old saying is don't ever commit a crime in Belle Chasse because there ain't but one way in and one way out,lol.

      Yeah you right! You also don't drive recklessly. I learned that at 15, when the police had a roadblock set up for me after someone reported me for speeding. By some miracle, I was released without any charges or even a ticket. Didn't go back into Plaquemines Parish for years after that.

    Judah P Benjamin who was Jefferson Davis’s right hand man during the civil war built his plantation in belle chasse. It’s not there anymore but I think where the bell is in town is where it once stood or near that area. He was a super interesting man. I’m doing research on him right now.

    • @504RoadTrips
      @504RoadTrips  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a number of plantations marked on various maps down through Plaquemines, but I don’t think there are any plantation buildings still standing, at least not on the Westbank of the parish.

    Hello, I just watched your video and am interested to know if the new bridge was completed yet. We are planning an RV trip to the Joint Reserve Base. We will be towing our fifth wheel rv and am concerned about the height of the tunnel. The website says it has a clearance of 13' 7 inches and our rv is 13' 1inches high. Is there a different way in or is my rvs height okay?

    • @504RoadTrips
      @504RoadTrips  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The new bridge isn't anywhere close to complete. Our latest video on that: th-cam.com/video/DlIMAbeOCYQ/w-d-xo.html
      The clearance is listed as 13' 7" on big yellow signs around the 53 second mark. So you *_should_* be ok if you're at 13' 1". But if it makes you nervous, you can take General DeGaulle Drive to a highrise bridge that'll get you there. That's the only other way to get down there without taking a ferry. www.google.com/maps/dir/29.9378998,-90.0577705/29.8239136,-90.0132102/@29.8656454,-90.0310418,12.79z/data=!4m9!4m8!1m5!3m4!1m2!1d-89.9842818!2d29.9037148!3s0x889e1deb30f31a85:0x16c6eee223cb895b!1m0!3e0

    Is Belle Chasse a good area??? Is it worth living there??? I need someone to help me with info on this city. Please!

      Belle Chasse is a very nice area, but the new construction is very expensive. Property values are pretty high throughout Belle Chasse, even on older homes.

    I looked at google street view and found only one LA 1261 route marker on Walker Rd. But no junction sign for LA 1261 @ La 23.

    • @504RoadTrips
      @504RoadTrips  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the junction sign is very recent. Im not sure which direction the state highway goes at the fork either. There’s no obvious way that it’ll connect with Peters Road in the future. The Google Streetview images are at least a year old.

    • @504RoadTrips
      @504RoadTrips  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, looking at StreetView, I see the junction Marker at LA-23 as well as three route markers on LA-1261 itself--one very close to where it dead-ends. At the fork, the state highway bears right, and then just ends rather abruptly.

    can the tunnel or bridge be crossed on a bicycle? I mean legally

    • @504RoadTrips
      @504RoadTrips  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not on the roadway. Have to have a motor and a license plate. But there's a pedestrian walkway that you can take a bike through, but you have to carry the bike down and up the stairs to get to it.
