  • In this video, Dr. Jay Mehta is going to explain about What are the common causes of blocked fallopian tubes and Fallopian Tube Test to diagnose fallopian blockage .
Fallopian tubes are female reproductive organs that connect the ovaries and the uterus.
If a fallopian tube is blocked, the passage for sperm to get to the eggs, as well as the path back to the uterus for the fertilized egg, is blocked. Common causes for blocked fallopian tubes include cornual spasm, infections and ectopic pregnancy. Let us understand more about causes of blocked fallopian and tests to detect blockages.
    Tests for Blocked fallopian tube
Whenever a couple who is infertile and is under investigation one of the most basic investigation a gynecologist or reproductive specialist will tell you to do is examination of Tubal patency.
There are 2-3 ways the Tubal patency is done.
Traditional Method : HSG i.e. hysterosalpingography . This is a X-ray based technique.
Modern Method : SSG i.e. Sonosalpingography. This is an ultrasound based technique.
Both theses techniques are performed in early half of menstrual cycle that means on day 6,7,8,9 or 10 of menstrual cycle. HSG procedure is slightly painful but majority of women do not experience any severe pain while doing this procedure.
In HSG a dye is passed through uterus and the dye spills out from the fallopian tube.
In SSG either betadine or saline is passed through the uterus and it spills out through fallopian tube.
If there is free peritoneal spill than it is believed that the fallopian tubes are open.
What are the causes of Blocked Fallopian Tubes?
    1. Fallopian tube blockage due to cornual Spasm.
Sometimes the lady gets scared and anxious while undergoing HSG or SSG procedure that the nervousness itself causes cornual spasm which can give false report that the tubes are blocked and that is one of the important causes of having tubal block.Blockage due to cornual spasm is going to bilateral that means both sided and proximal, which is called as cornual block.
    2. Fallopian tube blockage due to infections.
The second most common cause of blocked fallopian tube are infective causes . The infection that causes fallopian tube blockage is Pelvic TB. Apart from that there could be asymptomatic genital infections, infections which affect internal and external part of female genitals. Infections in the fallopian tube generally causes distal or mid-tubal blockages
    3. Fallopian tube blockage due to ectopic pregnancy.
Third most common cause of blocked fallopian tube is History of ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is the pregnancy that does not occur in the uterus. The most common location of ectopic pregnancy is pregnancy occurring in the fallopian tube.
The blockages which are mid-tubal, distal and associated with hydrosalpinxv are difficult to treat. Blocks which are categorized as proximal blocks, unilateral blocks or bilateral blocks due to cornual spasm are easy to treat.
It is important to know that open tube does not mean functional tube which is primary condition for pregnancy. Women with a blocked fallopian tube should discuss their treatment plan with their gynaecologist.
