I had the great honor and privilege to meet chet when I was a kid in the 60s when my father was a studio musician in Nashville and occasionally New York and Alabama. my father was also a phenomenal guitarist as well and I can remember one occasion I was around 6 years old and we had a makeshift studio in our basement and there was my father with chet , Roy Clark playing there guitars and knocking back a few cold black label beers lol ! I recall one thing about this guy that stood out in my memory of what a humble man and was so nice to me and my sisters . very nice guy . but Roy was just a barrel of fun and I'll not go into the details of his mischief lol ! great guys and this brought back very fond memorys for me . at 63 years of age now and playing guitar in my own band i always am still amazed at how easy guys like him made it look . i suppose to a great God given talent it probably was easy for them and I'm so glad i was blessed to be a part of our musical world and all of the amazing musicians I've had the pleasure to meet and play with over the years , but I gotta tell ya , ol chet was a hard act to follow as a guitarist and a person .

I get emotional whenever I see a Chet Atkins video , since he is not with us anymore . . So sad , so sad to me .. he is sorely missed. A kind and generous human. He had not one racist , bigoted bone in his body. All he cared about was a persons musical talent . You could be a black man, a jewish man, or whatever and if you were talented he was your friend . . We really need such kind human beings on Earth NOW !

I love that trill at the end of the first tune. And I love what he's doing with harmonics. Such iconic Chet sounds. If it wasn't for Chet, there would probably be no Jerry Reed or Tommy Emmanuel. And there would probably be no fingerstyle guitar as we know it today. And he was just so prolific, producing several albums every year. He has definitely earned his place in the history books.

If you think about the time this man spent learning his craft, knowing all those songs, all those styles, all those notes and complex picking, and who does it seemingly so utterly effortlessly, he plays like the rest of us breathe, just fluid, gorgeous, perfect playing... Then think about the top artists/songs playing RIGHT NOW, and compare what they're doing to this... His style might not be to everyone's taste, certainly, times change; but the rank amateurs and the crap they put out that passes for music now doesn't come close, doesn't come within a mile of, miles and miles of, what this man was doing decades ago, and to top it off, he was young, humble, modest, charming, and dressed in his Sunday Best, because he was an ARTIST and a PERFORMER, thru and thru... May we count ourselves as fortunate to have had people like him giving us so, so much, and doing it in so modest a manner... Times have changed, indeed...

  • @Wildvideonyc

Atkins was much more than just a great guitarist. Along with Merle Travis he invented these incredibly important fundamental country electric guitar techniques. And he took those techniques for picking and exploiting electric guitars very seriously. That's why his playing is sometimes so dry and simple it gets a little boring. But Atkins often played with a very droll, calm sound because he had deep respect for simple, classic melodies and was a professor of the electric guitar teaching others how to play it properly. That's why he played with such patience and discipline. In that regard he always reminded me of Andres Segovia, the modern father of the classical guitar. In time Atkins would bring that patience and discipline into the world of record producing and eventually as the most important record company executive in Nashville overseeing so many of the recordings during country music's greatest years. I think of him as more than a music maker .
To me Atkins was a Great American.

In this video, Chet was an established national star guitar player for about 15 years. He had jumped to prominence when the Carter family brought him in and recorded with him in 1949. At first the Nashville music establishment told the Carters that Atkins "wasn't allowed" to come and perform with them because they thought he'd threaten too many guitar players' livelihoods. The truth was Chet would become a primary producer in Nashville hiring scores of great players and then would become responsible for finding the next generation of superstars, many that previous establishment had rejected. He's also responsible for guitars that don't hum but also don't sound muddy. He had just as much to do with popularizing echo as Les Paul did and with recording effects as the Ventures would. Electric finger-style, harmonics and tapped notes would become big 20 years after he already astounded his fans with it. Chet inspired every guitar star from England that "invaded" the US scene from 64 through 74 and his youtube videos are among the most popular guitar melody performances. The importance of Chet Atkins on electric guitar and recorded music cannot be overstated.

I am not a country music fan, so I have not heard most of Chet's work. However, I have often thought, through the years, that if there were a "greatest guitar player of all" title, it would be him. It's just an intuitive sense or feeling, but every time I watch a video of him, he blows me away.
I have very high regard for many players and I am not completely comfortable with direct comparisons but he just seems to have a profound level of mastery I have not seen nor heard from anyone else. I can't quite put my finger on it.

Jimmie Webster was one of the first to do two hand tapping. In the 50s.
The amp is a Standel, first choice of many C&W players in the 1950s. Usually equipped with a JBL 15" speaker with a hi fi circuit, custom made one at a time. Originals are uber rare today.
Not all Gretsch pick guards had Atkins' name on them. The clip is from c.1964, Atkins began with Gretsch in 1954.
He also may have been playing a prototype as it looks like the pickups are the blade type Super 'trons which " hadn't appeared yet" in '64.

I was just hearing a TH-cam demonstration about the latest Boss electric effects pedal that so many rockers are hooked on! If Chet’s type of music fades through time n disappears, it will be a crying shame! It almost seems that the metal players went left n Chet went RIGHT:^)
