Fiskars X27 and X25 Splitting Axe Review

  • I received both these axes for Christmas last year, and finally got around to doing a review.
The X25 and the X27 are basically the same axe, but the X27 has a longer handle. Despite having a hollow plastic handle the axe feels balanced. The handles are really durable too. I have beat them both, and they are holding up. I am 5' 10" and prefer the control of the shorter X25.

I have the X25 and the control and efficiency of it is great. Wonderful axe.

X27 for me as I’m 5’11 and a half”. That half inch counts! And have had mine for over 10years (the older version obviously) but still splits real nice to this day (after occasional sharpening/we-shaping the blade on occasion). Highly recommend Fiskars products any day!

I watched your video a while back, but forgot to comment. I ended up buying the X25. Thanks for the video review.

i just bought an x27 today for a quick buck splitting some timber for a mate and i thoroughly enjoyed it haha.
im 6 5" and the long handle was so comfortable and on top of that i swing pretty wild sometimes and this thing seems indestructible haha great review!

I have the X25. I'm 5'6" and the X25 just plain feels good to me. Balance is good. I use a chopping block which gives a firm foundation to the piece being split. I have split pieces that I almost passed by but tried them anyway. I like it so well that bought a Fiskers hatchet and a pickeroon by Fiskers. I like all three.

    It's power (x27) vs accuracy (x25)
The arc of the x27 is longer so theres more energy, so it adds more force on the chop via more speed at the head. (Provided you have same stroke speed on the handles of both axes)
The x25 will do about the same force, but it really comes down to feel on the movement of the stroke and which is more comfortable.
I read somewhere your axe length should be near your arm length. You can get used to either, but the x25 packs easier. Plus if your going to chop a tree down the x25 is more accurate.
Sometimes bigger isn't always better, otherwise they'd have a 4 ft and a 5 ft axe handle. But they don't because its inaccurate so instead manufacturers add more weight to the head.
If you want more power get more weight like a heavy maul, or a wedge and a sledge. ( which if your cutting rounds is actually nice since some wedges can split 4 ways, so that = 1/2 the work)

Just to verify, the axe heads are identical between the two just different handle lengths? I see they are the same outline but wanted to see if they were the same thickness too.

Great review...technology sure has come a long ways. I remember using an ax in the early 80s that was an antique...and heavy. Can you please put a link in the "Description" section where to buy? I have been told I need to start doing that also with my videos and just started doing that.

Technology on these axes is pretty amazing. The handles are really comfortable. These were purchased at Home Depot, but could be bought at a ton of places.

Wouldnt even thing of getting or using an axe shorter than 3 feet...shorter axe can hurt you

    • @Dazlidorne
      @Dazlidorne 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It all comes down to your arm length. Fiskars has a video on youtube that shows how to properly choose the right size axe for you. You basically hold the axe vertically with your hand right under the head of the axe and then swing the bottom of the handle towards you following your arm. The bottom of the handle should hit you right around the armpit. If it goes past your armpit, it is too long.
