    Fun Facts: (GNU/)Linux runs almost on every supercomputer (at least the first 500) and over 40% of the internet is based on Linux servers

    • @classicrockonly
      @classicrockonly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Not over 90%. It’s more closer to 50%. Windows is still probably roughly 40%, Illumos runs a fraction for Samsung and probably others, and FreeBSD shovels out a huge chunk of North American internet because Netflix uses them to distribute video content. In 2015 it was almost 40% of internet traffic, but I’m sure it has gone down as Netflix has lost subs. Linux does as a matter of fact run on all top 500 super computers
      Edit: turns out my number is dated. It’s 80/20 now but the 80% is Unix/Unix-like in the numbers I see

      @@Imperator23Lp you’ll probably be correct in the near future ;) the stats are interesting bc it’s accounting for only web servers and the reporting is strange bc the source people go to says 80% Unix/Unix-like. Just under 40% of that is confirmed Linux and the other 40% is unknown. Meaning it could be Linux or another Unix-like OS. Also strange is in the past it reported 0% Red Hat (RHEL), but I have a hard time believing that, unless maybe Red Hat is primarily used in infrastructure, not web servers

    • @classicrockonly
      @classicrockonly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @43_XA_Ashutosh Sononey Yes, I know what Unix-like means and what OS is/isn't Unix-like, it's only interesting in the report that they were unable to differentiate. A lot of sites also won't tell you the OS they are, only the web server they use so I wonder how they figure out which server is Unix-like, Linux specifically, BSD specifically, or Windows, etc.

    I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

    My PC was too old for windows 11 so tried linux as a why not option. For my surprise, everything is working as expected, the system is way snappier than W10 and lucky for me all my SW got covered with native apps. I wanted to dual-boot while W10 is still supported but to my own surprise, I have not launched windows on this machine since the linux install. My steam games works like under windows, got my browser, work stuff, home stuff, everything. Now thinking of wiping it and mount the drives used by windows under linux.
    For starters and conservative users: Go for linux mint. Mate edition feels like XP, Cinnamon feels like W7, but with stable up2date software. Advanced users should try fedora/manjaro, it's a bit steeper learning curve but you will experience the latest and greatest on linux side.

      @ghost-user559 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RemsHusband Well that’s definitely true for Linux, but only really because MacOS is proprietary. Really Unix/BSD is the most stable and secure system you can have, and MacOS minus the bloat runs on ancient hardware as it’s essentially Unix, they just don’t want you to, but actually my decade old a MacBook Pro can still be patched to run the latest MacOS with OpenCore, and it runs like new.
      Linux wins with the compatibility because there are so many distros. But really many distros have dropped 32bit support, and Linux is only as good as the specific distros you use. Not every distro is as freedom focused. So it’s hard to compare all the Linux distros that exist to a single OS distribution like MacOS or Windows. Plus only really a few mainline Linux Distros are even guaranteed to exist in a year or two, and you can’t really rely on any given distro to keep support or even exist except for those mainline distros, so in that sense MacOS has at least guaranteed support for years and years, on average around 6 per OS update. Only a server distro, or LTS Ubuntu or a Redhat or Debian distro really has a similar support cycle.

    As a Linux user I approve the representation, devs really need to focus on the user experience, I have way less problems than in windows even when I use one of the more prone to encounter update issues of them all. And the "not able to install" part is true in the same way it is for all OS, there are software only available for one of them, and it is mostly Ms office, that should be replaced with only office, and I mean in windows too, is just better and the online version has the complete toolset while also being free, seriously, ditch MS office. For Photoshop there is gimp, but the learning curve makes it not worth it for most, and the other tool that is for windows only and can be installed on Linux but you need a little know how, that tool is also way better than Photoshop, is not free nor open source, but is extremely good and way cheaper, and with a one time payment option instead of subscription, again, it should replace Photoshop even if you have access to it easily, is called ClipStudioPaint
    And since this is a comment mentioning Linux I can't avoid making the comment, I use Arch BTW.

    If I am not mistaken most servers run on Linux while most people use windows for personal use. Although thanks to things like the Steam Deck linuc is getting more attention and I hope one day its average user base increase but I hope distros dont make compromises to accommodate them by making it more like windows and mac.

      @@rvmiv_ Oh I agree with you. I grew up with the old school Macintosh, and we had Windows 95 and 98 and onwards. So I have grown up with both, and they all have something I like and something I can’t stand sometimes.
      MacOS is my favorite since OS X came out. The only downside is there isn’t really any new games or way to play games. I don’t even play games very often but I know for a lot of people that is part of why they have a machine.
      MacOS is so smooth and almost never breaks. It’s literally like if a Linux distro was nearly perfect and never broke.
      Windows is horrible now since they added all the bloated spyware but it’s the easiest way to game. I like many Linux distros but even the best of them can break with an update or can be really buggy for no apparent reason out of nowhere, or if you have the wrong hardware certain distros don’t play nice with all drivers. And overall Linux is terrible at certain hardware management like battery life and thermals and basic functionality.
      If Linux had as many professional apps I would love to switch. But unfortunately many of the open source apps take years or decades to put out new features to compete with mainstream developers. Photoshop or Affinity or Final cut, or Logic, there is just too many powerful apps on Mac to go full time Linux for me yet.
      Right now I like everything about Linux, I just couldn’t daily drive it at this point on all my machines. But I do like to install it on old hardware to give it a second life after it’s too old to receive updates.
