Iodine prevents gout. Sodium doesn't. You don't need a lot of iodine in your diet, but you do need some, and iodized salt is a reasonable way to get it. If you don't eat iodized salt, you should make sure you get iodine somewhere else in your diet, because it's actually a bit important.

I also love how he just immediately starts thinking of experimenting with everything.

James has a point. If he can sell it (with an adequate margin), it's worth it. So if he can make pretentious ingredients useful, he's ahead. Plus, that means he gets paid to play, much better than having to work for a living.
That said, good ketchup (I forgot how much it costs to make it, I think $7.50 a pint, valuing my labor at "free") is not pretentious. It's just good. But I'd be hard pressed to pay that much for the exact same thing. Strange, that.

A lot of colourblind people can see some range of colours, so it's hard to guess what something will look like to them. My bf is colourblind and he can usually tell the difference between most colours based on which one is lighter/darker, so I treat him as I would anyone else and let him correct me when needed. It's easier, and better than trying to guess what things look like to him and ending up patronizing instead.

Pretentious means overvalued because of unnecessary attributes. For example, it doesn't matter that salt is from the Himalayas. It's salt. Cooking or serving on salt will make stuff salty. Whoop. Anything food with gold in it is pretentious because gold has little or no flavor. Fruity wine additive is worse than pretentious because it ruins the wine. Liquorice helps some people's digestion, liquorice has a unique flavor. Liquorice powder may have a use in cooking. If it became trendy and people put it on their kale chps, that would be pretentious.

I think dry wines taste like piss in a cup. I would happily buy some fruity dust so that I could enjoy a social occasion wine with other people instead of just shutting them down because I don't want something that tastes bad, which otherwise I will and without hesitation. It's more pretentious to just say "This is a good flavor and you have to like it" to other people instead of taking into account the fact humans like different things.

Saying something in a mocking tone doesn't make it true. It's fact many things are an acquired taste, in fact, many of life's finer things are. The evolution of the palate is part of becoming mature and sophisticated. You sound like the kind of adult who still uses ketchup. Do you think any likes their first beer? First caviar? When I was a kid, I didn't even like onions, nevermind dark chocolate, broccoli, beer, scotch, caviar, oysters, you get the picture. You sound like a simpleton who couldn't even tell the difference between a black truffle and black caviar. I absolutely hated my first IPA. Did I give up? No. Now IPA's are my favorite and I don't miss out on anything. I can enjoy hunting down a super rare Double IPA and relishing its full complexity without even tasting bitter. A top DIPA feels like being hugged by an angel. I would never have experienced that if I just gave up drinking beer. Do you know what a $9 80% Cocoa chocolate bar tastes like? A heck of a lot better than a Hershey's bar, but you need a mature enough palate. You are missing out and you refuse to learn your lesson so you will spend your entire life missing out. No sane person would call 30-year-old single malt scotch hogwash, but an inexperienced drinker isn't going to like it. That isn't the whiskey's fault. Things that appeal to the lowest common denominator just aren't as complex. That's a scientific fact. Most people like bananas but that doesn't mean bananas are better than oysters. I are extremely immature. We don't all have time and money to learn to like every fine food, but you should try your best.

I've worked as a chef in the past and what I'm feeling is that these things are pretentious if you don't know what they are and you buy them for your home just so that you can show them off to your friends but if you're in a work setting where the business is paying for it and not yourself and you can buy them in bulk and use them so they're cheaper it becomes more practical. And you'd be using them to impress your pretentious guests and can charge more so it makes money and again that makes it more practical. Not to mention that as a chef (or just interested in cooking) it's just fun to experiment with new ingredients and recipes. So basically my idea of what pretentious means is if you get a thing to show it off when you don't really know what it is even though it's really impractical. Just like saying big words that you don't really know what they mean to sound smart is pretentious. But if you do know what they mean and they help you express yourself better especially in a work setting where jargon is understood by everyone and not anything special then it's not pretentious. For example if you're calling body parts or illness by their scientific name for no reason at a party to sound smart vs when a doctor uses the proper name to another doctor to more specifically tell them what is wrong. But that's just my opinion.

The thing to understand about so called "himalayan" salt is the hype surrounding it. This was not clear in this video, but it goes far into pseudoscience and miracle cures. That makes it pretentious because it is an impure blend of led, iron, chromium in the salt, in amounts that someomes makes it unsuitable for use in industry (road salt) or for human consumption.

    • @debbieh7063
      @debbieh7063 6 ปีที่แล้ว

because of the density? Or maybe the viscosity? of alcohol, luster dust will kind of hang out kind of suspended and swirl prettily, even in still liquor, and will eventually settle out, but it takes a while. You'd finish any drink before it settled to the bottom. And with champagne or prosecco, the bubbles stir up the particles even more, so the drink would go flat before they settle out. there's a liquor called viniq (it's okay, but not great), which you can buy, or you can diy.

So I call pretentious on the people who buy the packaged version (unless you are trying to figure out what it is supposed to taste like so you can make your own).

I've smoked sugar before. Made marshmallows with it. Rolled them in smoked powdered sugar. They were delicious. But smoking something like that (salt, sugar) doesn't impart a lot of flavor unless you use a LOT of the stuff (marshmallows are literally about 3/5ths sugar by weight) and there's no fat or other flavors to hide the miniscule amount of smoke. Much better off using liquid smoke if you want a smokey flavor in your food.

So I’m a chef and it’s a bit stormy outside so I was you tubing it up today In, what I’d call, a bit of a drunken haze. I sat and binged watched countless episodes of your show for the very first time. I’m absolutely hooked. Good job and I’m now a fan.

Pretentious: Intended to impress others, or marked by an unwarranted claim of importance or distinction.
Black garlic ketchup: NOT pretentious - By the sound of it, the stuff actually has a reasonably unique flavor experience and doesn't really pack on the glam too much.
Rose gold shimmer: DEFINITELY pretentious - It's obviously something intended to liven up the drinks at a party, taking a fancy Italian white wine and adding a bunch of glam. Granted, its distinctiveness is definitely real, so it's a good pretentious.
Raw liquorice powder: NOT even questionably pretentious - Like... what? It's a cooking ingredient. That's mundane as hell! There's nothing "impressive" about it and it's only as important or distinctive as cinnamon or cream cheese! Come on, show me something.
Smoked sugar: Pretentious - If it wasn't so damned expensive, that'd be one thing. But it obviously doesn't work well as a condiment so you're stuck using it as a cooking ingredient, and at that point you can just use a normal smoke additive and get much better results.
Salt block: Provisionally pretentious - Stop yapping about how "healthy" this shit is and just sell it for the fucking FLAVOR you asshole, quack-remedy-pushing fraud meisters! THAT is the absolute pinnacle of pretentious: You are trying to impress people with unwarranted claims of importance and distinction all in one goddamn fell swoop. It is no goddamn different from those shit-heads who sell "essential oils" as alternative medicine. NOW... if you wanna talk to me about the COOKING EXPERIENCE and the FLAVOR etc. etc. etc. then you are VERY rapidly exiting the realm of sickening hyper-pretention and diving straight into something that's actually worth listening to.

I think the Rose Gold Shimmer is more useful than pretentious. It reminds me of that pill you can take which makes anything tastes sweet eg. an onion taste like an apple. If I was at a formal event and I had to drink champagne I may put some of that Rose Gold Shimmer in because personally I think all alcohol either takes like piss or nail polish remover.

If you don't like the dry taste of a wine, just don't drink it. There are *TONS* of alternatives to wine that don't require adding superfluous sugar to it.

Many essential oils and herbs do have health benefits, and there are plenty of modern medicines which have their roots in folk medicine. That being said, any kind of alternative treatment for major problems should be tried alongside regular medical treatment, and only if your doctor can affirm it won't interfere. Even if any benefits are merely due to the placebo effect, if it makes someone feel better and causes no harm I can't really fault it. Medicine isn't just about healing, it's about improving quality of life for the sick as well.
Now, when some stupid wannabe witch doctor convinces somebody to stop actual medical treatment and buy his / her overpriced herbal mixtures instead, that's a whole different story. Those people are fucking idiots and scumbags, and if someone dies under their 'care' they should be charged with murder and fraud. They're preying on people who are too desperate to think rationally and offering false hope, and I would absolutely love to see every last one of them infected with cancer and forbidden to use anything but their own 'remedies' for treatment.

Ooo, missed opportunities w the liquorice granules: sprinkle into hot chocolate, swirl into full cream raspberry jam waffles, etc. Chocolate and raspberries are the best combo for liquorice.
