i fucking cried seeing the last shots of the places they went to. like i know there's a trilogy but i still felt that pain of letting go of something you want so bad too soon and the fear of not knowing what the future has in store for you.

I definitely had that feeling too when I first saw the film. It took my breath away. Thank you for sharing

i really love this movie, like it drives me crazy. Its obviously perfect, it gives me the indescribable happiness. Sometime i wish i can erase all of my memories, just to watch this movie again and feel it again. The perfectness of this movie

Yes! It's perfect to me too, from the dialogue to the set up of the scenes and the feelings that they explore.

    [SPOILER-ish]
In addition to the points you've made, another bit I found interesting was how, at the very end, the film shows a series of shots consisting of just the places the two characters visited in Vienna. There was either no action or very minimal (a single person walking by, for instance). They were just kind portraits of still locations like a table at a cafe, or a quiet alleyway where they shared moments together. It was cool on many levels: It could be the memories the two of them are having as they ride the trains away, and it also could be a comment on the transitory nature of life: These inanimate places are given life and significance while you're there, but then return to just mute "things" when you're gone. It's almost as if they're waiting for the next person or couple to come and give them life. It could also show how the moments you've shared in places like these are gone forever, never to be re-enacted or recaptured exactly the same way again, and will live on only in your memory--"I sat there once, with the love of my life, but now it looks like just a table and some chairs."

I loved these shots in the film too - these still shots of Vienna were very powerful. Great analysis on it!

This wasn't a romantic movie for me, it was more philosophical; connecting through conversation with someone gives you a high like that of a drug. Frankly speaking, I didn't care much about their romance as much as I did about their philosophical/spiritual conversations because some of the thoughts expressed by the characters, I'd actually thought about them. I had goosebumps several times throughout the film. It's hard to make such movies these days because, you know, it's the insta-facebook-tinder audience you have to grapple with.

It was all about the initiation of intellectual stimulation among two individuals throughout the whole journey.

Wife convinced me to watch the Trilogy and I am only so far into Sunrise and Sunset. I love both of them. The ending of Sunset when she is dancing to the music and it fades, I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I have to watch the final movie Before Midnight.
I recently watched The Fault in Our Stars. It was a tough watch but the romance felt sweet in it. My Wife is making me like this genre.

The ending of Sunset is one of my favourite things!! It really took me by surprise the first time I saw it, but it was such a perfect moment! The dance, the music, Jesse watching her from the seat. Glad you're enjoying the romance genre more and thanks for stopping by!

Before Sunrise is in my top 10 favorite films. Really sad that the events of the film cannot happen in today's time. In today's world of MGTOWers, Tinder degenerates and the Instagram crowd, the thesis is in the total opposite direction and...it's really tragic. Thank you for your review!

    • @sportjunky4371

The MGTOW crowd isn't really as big as people think. The internet just makes it seem like its a sweeping worldwide thing but its really not.

This movie is so dialogue driven. It is as if the plot and everything else was secondary, and the dialogue is put at the forefront. It's a stroll and talk movie. it's all about the dialogue and it's interesting, soothing, romantic and thought provoking dialogue. And it has a sense of poetry to it, nice flow

This film apart from the other two parts of the before trilogy was all about the initiation of intellectual stimulation among two individuals throughout the whole journey. Plus every scene felt so natural unlike other romantic flicks in which there seems to be forced expressions and acting skills projected out of nowhere totally unrelatable in reality. Before trilogy stands out for sure !

I watched all three of them tonight at work. The first one was beautiful and haunting, but we didn't really learn that much about what careers they'd want in their future. The second one felt like it only went for 20 minutes, and the song she sang at the end was also very beautiful. Watching the first two, I cared about their getting together, the set up. The third one was post set up and I had trouble caring. Also the neighbour who kept talking about sex all the time got annoying. Delpy's character got quite annoying, threatening to leave him at any moments' notice, attacking him randomly instead of looking for solutions that could bring compromise. I'd say probably they should have stopped on the first one.

S Nomad I think you’re missing the point here then. Celine and Ethan are flawed characters shown in non-fantastical situations. The fact that you find Celine annoying doesn’t make the movie bad.

I loved your review of this film, and everything about it, made me think that you will hate the film "Ikiru"… My favorite film. So I desperately want to encourage you to watch it.
As far as alternative romance films "City Lights", "Garden State", "Vertigo", and the recent release "Bad Loves Company - The Visual EP". Some of that is meant as a half joke, but all of the content is solid.
