- This clean, cozy haven of progressive ideals is home to just 8,000 people - making it the least populace state capital in the nation; but, the city bustles with more than 21,000 during the daytime work hours. Settled in 1781, this town was chosen as the state capital in 1805. A huge fire destroyed a majority of the buildings in 1895; but almost all the buildings you see downtown are the originals from reconstruction pre-1900s! Today, the town combines with Barre, Vermont to form 'the twin cities', and serves as home to many insurance companies, including National Life Group (established in 1848, now one of the largest in the US). Montpelier hosts the world-famous Green Mountain Film Festival each year!

thinking of moving to the general area from CO. CA is screwing my state up. Got way too expensive here. like 120-140% of the national average. Even Pueblo, one of the poorest cities in the US next to Victor/Cripple Creek CO is gentrifying :( What is the economy like? Any math/tech type jobs? Educated in those. Only other experience is in food service/transportation. Still, can work 80 hours weeks. Seems pretty central to Northeast bc skiing and some great hiking which is cool. Can actually afford a home for the price of a 500 sq ft condo in CO. All while keeping land in West Cliff, CO near Salida.
