  • Grass Roots Pond and Garden has been a family-run water-gardening business in southeast Michigan since 1973. Sam Bates walks us through how he safely relocates koi fish to dewater the pond for a deep clean. The process involves netting out leaves and muck, power washing algae from rocks, and aerating the pond water.

    My issue with 'deep cleaning' a pond (or aquarium) is it doesn't address the cause of the algae buildup. You can clean an ecosystem all you want, but if the pond is still getting too much light, or holding too much waste, or being over fed, that algae's coming right back. It seems like a colossal waste of money in a majority of cases.

    With fish tanks you have to leave some of the old water in there because it stresses the fish out having all new water. Is it the same with ponds and koi and all the other creatures that will come live in the pond?

    • @alexwang4894
      @alexwang4894 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. A pond is pretty much just a giant aquarium

    • @misstweetypie1
      @misstweetypie1 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      it might be a bit different, since the koi live outside, water changes might not be as bad as with a fish tank, where the temperature is always a constant temperature. It seems like they are keeping the fish in their pond water, so they probably add that water back into the pond.

    • @grassrootspondgarden3431
      @grassrootspondgarden3431 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      When ponds are super dirty we won’t use the old water. When the water is adequate enough to store and reuse we definitely do that! Koi are much more tolerant to quick changes than most may think. Any physical transfer or water difference can induce some stress but that is just part of a spring cleaning. Usually within 24-48 hours the koi are back to normal operations! Also adding that bacteria at the end whether it’s all new water or some old water helps get things back to normal. I hope this helps 😃

      Most of these fish like warmer water. At least here in Michigan, it’s difficult/impossible to keep them during the winters outside. I’ve seen high finned banded sharks in ponds before but they can only do so much. Much more to handle in a pond than in an aquarium. I hope this helps 😃

    Algae infested seems an odd description, when algae is an enrichment to the biosystem. City folks gotta sterilize everything I guess.

    • @misstweetypie1
      @misstweetypie1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Algae can be an infestation, it will use up all the oxygen in the water, killing the fish. But you're right, in this case I think people want their pond to look clear and pretty.

    • @martiantexan7632
      @martiantexan7632 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@misstweetypie1 Props to you when you realize that algae is a plant. Plants process carbon dioxide waste from animals and produce oxygen that animals need. These little ponds count as an enclosed ecosystem and deserve attention to the circular biological processes. Taking away the algae removes oxygen production that can be supplemented with an aerator. The aerator could serve an extra benefit by being used to circulate the water through a sufficient amount of gravel to host the bacterial organisms that naturally help process the solid waste, preventing the buildup of poisonous ammonia. These are just a few of the things to consider when managing an enclosed ecosystem, and can be arranged in a way that also keeps it clear and pretty.

    • @misstweetypie1
      @misstweetypie1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@martiantexan7632 agreed. I meant that in certain cases, algae blooms can be a death sentence for the fish. I do agree that there is a way to have a nice little minimal input system (a pond will never be a closed system, because animals move in, leaves fall in, etc.) but that is usually up to a DYI enthusiast to build, because a pond that is self-sufficient doesn’t have much scope to make money off of, versus the type of pond in the video where there is yearly maintenance, filters, fish, food, de-chlorinators, etc. to buy all the time.

    • @grassrootspondgarden3431
      @grassrootspondgarden3431 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree the title may be misleading. We clean our clients ponds mostly for the organic materials such as leaves and fish waste. We remove the algae and try to minimize it coming back for the sake of the appearance. String algae is definitely not hurting the fish just the beauty of the system 😃

    Most of those ponds would look better if there didn't have so many koi in a very small space. Fish poop is the main cause of algae blooms, and carps are known to produce lots of waste.
