@@riktovia lol, you have absolutely no idea 😅 He is the least boring flutist, I've ever heard. His tone is amazing. On the other hand Dennis is unmusical, his tone is not so great.
Let me be clear, especially to all you people comparing Bouriakov to whomever: Denis Bouriakov is in a category all by himself, and so you cant compare. He blows away any other flutist alive or dead. Technique, articulation, tone, projection, it's not even a conversation. If you cant' hear it, then your understanding of the flute is very little. There are other decent players, but they can't play half as good. A musician like Bouriakov comes around once every 200 years, or more. This man has a freakishly unique technique for blowing loud in the low register and tonguing it hard. He does it louder, faster, better. And don't say that 'loud doesnt mean good'. Im not speaking of playing loud makes you better. I'm saying its an ability that he has and can do it when the music dictates it. 'Faster' - same thing. He can rip through the most difficult passages with ease. Tonguing'- I've never heard anybody tongue faster. Now, after stating all that, his tone is like nothing I've heard before. I keep thinking its his magic head-joint/ flute combo, but we all know its not that. If it was, then everybody could match him. Let me say this; I once attended a master class he did in Los Angeles at Colburn. I was alone, like a loser, sitting up high in the small room, he was on stage. He didnt play at all for the first 2 girls that played, he just talked. But then he picked up his flute to demonstrate something. And I literally could not take it. I had to get up and leave. I walked out (James Walker looked at me shocked) across the street to the underground parking at Disney Hall, and drove home. His tone was too much to bear,, it was too beautiful. It was actually shocking. I was so moved, I was beyond crying. Dazed and confused, I drove out the driveway in the underground street and got so lost, I didnt know where the hell I was or where the freeway was. I could have been killed had my car broke down. His tone was so loud and full, that I knew then I could never ever play that well. Not only loud, but the quality of his tone is unique. In flute playing, tone comes first, then everything else. If your tone sucks, then your dead to me. I saw Rampal play 3 times when I was around 10 to 13 years old. His tone was beautiful, sweet and special. Ive seen Galway, hes loud and great. I never really heard a flute till I heard Bouriakov in person.
You are listening to the heir of the throne of Sir James Galway..........Denis's lower register and overall command of the instrument is a force to be reckoned with.

@BABISKANAS This is the original cadenza written by khachaturian himself :) though, there are a few places (e,g chords on the violin) that have been adapted for flute, and some other parts have been added in as well.
How do you feel you changed on flute in 11 years, from your techniques to what you like to play, and how you choose to play them? Do you feel you have stagnated on the flute in your position? What are you thinking of when choosing your next move in the realm of music?
Hi Jim, I'm sorry if you misunderstood me. I am not a flute player, but I do play the harp in an orchestra that accompanied a violin soloist. I am, however, killing myself practising right now because every instrument has their crazy pieces, isn't it?
I noticed that he plays from the left side of his embouchure ---- the only other flutist I've seen play this way is the late Jean-Pierre Rampal who had a "split lip". Any comments on this?
Jim Millen actually when i had a masterclass with him he spoke about it,but he feels that it works for him thus he uses it.i dont think there a specific way to play an instrument because if it suits you and sounds brilliant and still has the flexibility and ability like other flautists or better then no one can really say anything
My flute teacher played with him before, and she told me that when he smiled he tended to smile to one side, so it follows that his natural embouchure would also be off center. Mine is also a little off center. It's not a special technique you would train on purpose as far as I know.
If I'm a flute player, I should go kill myself right now... Luckily I'm not, but as part of an orchestra that played this with a violin soloist (and listened to it countless times in the process) I can say that this is simply superb
Yes it was written for violin --- but don't "kill" yourself. Bouriakov's performance was transposed for flute. Practice, practice. You'll get it. Don't give up now. Regards, Jim.
