In command prompt, it says "MySQL connection id is 14" instead of 16 as you have there.
Is this difference ok or something need to be fixed?

Brother first add the bin path of mysql server to the environment variable them type mysql --version then it will show you the expected output

Workbench gives you a UI to create database, tables, perform operations, run queries, etc. Shell gives you a Command Line interface for the same. I would suggest going for both. Learning (or at least knowing) both will help you in getting a wider understanding.

Would you install more than 500mb - 1GB of software's on your system to be on the safe side? I wouldn't do that even on an i7, 1TB HDD.

As you said, at first, uninstall MYSQL completely. If you will re-install after uninstalling properly, there won't be any error.
