    Great trip! The Perfect Circle is a real gem!!! That record is not easy to find, especially in nice condition. I’ve been a fan of George Semper for a very long time. He’s the brains behind the bay are funk phenomenon. The Perfect Circle is clearly one of my favorite records in my collection. I’m good friends with George Semper’s Son, Joel. George is an amazing artist, so unknown to the masses yet so well connected and respected in the industry itself, and for good reason.
    First off to many George is considered a pioneer of the Hammond B3. He’s a phenomenal musician, writer, producer, engineer and discoverer of talent. He’s responsible for most of Mary Love’s recordings. I’m working on an interview with Joel about George’s career. Congratulations of finding that amazing record. I dig The Jazz Brothers on Riverside Gap and Chuck Mangione. Tenor Sal Nistico kicks ass on that recording and has some great albums of his own worth looking into. Take care.
    Steve

      Thanks for the info on George. I was not familiar with him before finding this record although did read a bit afterward. Let me know if you do the interview. - Kieran

    7 stores and no buys, I applaud your restraint sir. Van Ronk is great. Never been to CA, so a lot of new stores for me. Have ordered from Signal and DG online quite a bit lately.

    Nice one! Really enjoyed this segment. That Hugh Masakela is a real nice record, so different from his norm and I'm glad he changed it up a bit.

    Kieran cool outlook on the record shops in Chicago and San Diego I haven’t dug in Chicago in a while I went to Dusty Groove in late November didn’t find anything . That Signal shop looks cool I have to check them out but what I’ve been noticing the prices have been outrageous IMO and a lot shops and they mostly sell more online and shops have a lot of new albums too . I dug that Hugh Masakela you grabbed . I’m definitely going to revisit Los Angeles they have a ton of stores from what friends told me.

      You aren’t wrong about the prices Lovell. You should check out signal though. But don’t expect deals. The masakela is so good.

    Looks like you scored some nice stuff. I have never really record shopped in SD and it’s so close to me. I will go next month and I want to hit up a place called 2 dollar record spot. Doesn’t sound like you went there. I am sure it’s mostly crap but it intrigues me.

    • @NEEDLEGROOVEVINYL
      @NEEDLEGROOVEVINYL  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely did not hear about that spot. Let me know how it is if you do! You never know what you might find.

    l haven't been to shops in san diego for at least ten years, a lot of newer places now... that charles owens is a nice one on discovery, most of the label is uninteresting to me though they did put out a couple of nice jack wilson albums and anthony ortega
    killer martino score... funny l went to chicago many years ago and went to jazz record center which had just flooded the night before, they opened but it was difficult to look through the bins....
    man, Lebron brothers, l never see that kind of stuff...
    you exhibited great patience on the first leg of the trip....

      I grabbed rain dance by Ortega locally shortly before my trip. Had never seen it before and then I saw a sealed copy at folk arts. A score for someone. Really enjoyed the record.
      There is/was a jazz record center in Chicago?
      Surprised you don’t see stuff like Lebron brothers in your parts.

      @@NEEDLEGROOVEVINYL my bad, it was Jazz Record Mart, owned by the guy who started Delmark label... it closed a few years ago. l almost never see any old copies on Fania, Cotique etc...

    So everything desirble was too expensive, or almost?

    • @NEEDLEGROOVEVINYL
      @NEEDLEGROOVEVINYL  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sadly it mostly felt like that for me. Maybe I’m just cheap 🤣 I did splurge on the The Perfect Circle and Gap Mangione Trio as I felt they were fairly priced.

    • @StuntrockConfusion
      @StuntrockConfusion 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@NEEDLEGROOVEVINYL Yes, all of my recent jazz purchases that would be desirable have been leftfield stuff, but even htere, I see prices up by 20-25% in general. And good copies are becoming really scarce, making most purchases a now or never case. In a way, it is fun, as it makes most purchases special, and well thought. But It also makes me look the opposite of what I am, since I am far from rich ^^

    i think the pandemic jazz craze dried up a lot of the jazz at shops. and now that those same people are getting out they'd rather sell online and break even rather than take everything to a local shop.
