  • Madhavi Mudgal is a renowned Odissi dancer based in Delhi. The dance form of Odissi captured the national imagination when a young dancer called Priyamvada Mohanty danced a few items for an inter university youth festival in 1954. It was Odissi’s first outing outside its home state. The soft and lyrical moves of the dance fascinated young dancers then. Since then, the dance form has evolved and flourished. In this conversation with Madhur Gupta, Mudgal talks about her fascination with sculpting forms in space. She reminisces about her long association with her guru, the legendary Kelucharan Mohapatra, and also talks about the changes in style and technique adopted by young dancers of today.
This is part 1 of a two part interview conducted by Madhur Gupta at Sanskriti, New Delhi. Madhur Gupta is one of the leading Odissi dance exponents of his generation. He is also an author and columnist widely featured in national and international publications for his sensitive writings in the field of arts and culture. Apart from extensively performing and writing, Madhur also teaches Odissi at Sangeet Vidya Niketan, New Delhi.
