You Don't Need Scales To Improvise

Almost everyone thinks that Jazz improvisation is about scales and modes. It ain't necessarily so!

Humm🤔
Play E7 the dominant scale?
Or, E major scale?
Or, E diminished?
Or, just focus on the E note, and the 3rd of E major.
Confusing.
P.s.
Improvising with the E7 scale, over this progression, doesnt sound good to the ear.
What you're playing sounds right, but its not E7😅
Oh well, maybe I'm missing something.
I'm familiar with 2 5 1's,
1 6 2 5's, and using diminished passing scales etc. Along with the family of dominants in improvisation.
But, E7 over this particular jam, does not compute.
Or, another option is A minor melodic possibly.
