Section 1 - Fish Bait
What fishing bait does is that it spawns a random fish from the fish pool at where you threw it. Fishbait is useful for fish that have very restricted spawn areas, such as the Blue Marlin at the pier.
Fish Bait can be from Manila clams, which can be dug up from sand when you see tiny black circles spitting out water. They are very abundant and are easy to farm, and only one is required to create fishing bait.
Once you have dug up the Manila clam, you will automatically learn the fishing bait recipe, which can be made at any workbench.
Section 2 - Fishing Techniques
These techniques are to prevent thumb twitching, which can cause rare fish to be scared away.
Technique 1: Eyes closed. Use the vibrations in your controller (if you have it) to feel the bite. Since the fake bites barely shake your controller, you won't twitch by accident in anticipation. This technique may slow down reaction time.
Technique 2: Thumbs flexed. Instead of placing your thumb on the A button, hold the thumb up, flexing the Tendon to make it so twitches don't press A. This doesn't slow your speed down and I have used it myself to great success.
Section 3: Shadow Analysis
Firstly, shadows come in seven types and six sizes.
1 - Very Small - Clownfish
2 - Small - Horse Mackerel
3 - Medium - Barred Knifejaw
4 - Large - Red Snapper
5 - Very Large - Sea Bass :(
6 - Largest - Coelacanth
6s - Largest but with a fin - Great White Shark
6e - Longer than a size 6 - Moray Eel
Use these sizes to differentiate between the possible fishes in your spawning pool (Section 4)
The most difficult and most rewarding is knowing how to tell between sizes 5 and 6. As this allows you to avoid sea bass. At roughly the same thickness, the size 5 is very top-heavy. The head of the fish is very wide, and it curves inwards to form a thin body. However, the size 6 is different. Even though the head is the same thickness, the body is wider, the shadow is longer, and girth is more evenly distributed down the rest of the shadow's length.
Section 4: Understanding Spawning Pools
All the spawning times and months for the fish can be found on the Animal Crossing New Horizons wiki. Make sure to look at the correct hemisphere.

A spawning pool is the list of possible fish that can spawn at a certain time and location. Some of these intersect with other locations, such as the Pier, and the ocean.
Let's say we want to catch the Blue Marlin, which is a rare fish that can only be caught at the pier. For example, let's say we are trying to catch it in the Southern Hemisphere.
First, check the chart. Second, check the correct hemisphere. The chart says the Blue Marlin indeed spawns in March [Southern Hemisphere] and at any time of day. This means we will be able to catch it.
Let us refer back to the chart on what we can catch. There are 26 possible fishes that can be caught in March. However, by fishing before 4pm on a Sunny day, we can avoid the Coelacanth, The Saw shark, The Great White Shark, and the Hammerhead shark, bringing down the possible fishes to 22.
Do this for ALL the rare fish you want to catch to increase chances!

My technique is to base catching off of audio only. I close my eyes, or look away from the screen, and wait for the noise of the fish taking the bite to press A. I rarely mis-press A now, normally only when I get cocky and look at the screen instead :P
This!! I do the same thing, it's way easier because the brain reacts faster to sound than it does to visuals. Makes it way more chill to fish.

Ok people. I have a guide to get rid of sea bass. Basically, when you catch one, dump it in your river, as it can’t live in freshwater, and it dies. Ta-Da!

I've caught 27 different fish and sometimes when the float goes down and I press A the fish immediately leaves. Very frustrating

Additional tip: Fish will only attempt to bite a maximum of 6 times. When it’s going for that 6th attempt, it’s a guaranteed bite. I’ve noticed that it’s very unlikely that it will get all the way up to 6 attempts in this version of AC, but it’s a good tip to know.
Edit: I originally stated 5 bites in this comment, as 5 is the maximum amount of bites in previous games, but some people report having up to 6 bites. I personally haven’t seen more than 5, but be on the lookout for 6

I feel I'm at a bit of an advantage with the "Jesus take the wheel" method, considering I'm legally blind so rely on that method. I have to say that AC, particularly NH, has ECXCELENT sound design! I'm always able to hone in on baloons I'd otherwise miss as well as having good reaction to fish biting most of the time. I just kinda suck ast aiming ... Ah well! I also give major props to them making the cracks in the ground for fossils much easier to see! I always had problems in previous games, because I tended to mistake them for weeds and the reverse when I wasn't paying very close attention.
Yeah I think sound or vibration fishing is way more accurate than visual fishing. I do sound fishing and get around 80% catch rate, with visual fishing I'll only get every other fish.
I’ve also noticed the sounds are brilliant, how you’ll move areas and the sounds of the trees will transform into lapping waves. It adds another sense back in making the game experience even better
How do you decorate your island?
PinkPixel Productions Carefully, methodically, and with a big perfectionist streak. I share the island with my 7-year-old niece, so I decorate with a lot of compromise too 😄 I can see well enough what decorations are, and have a good enough idea of what I eventually want this island to look like
I'm not blind or deaf but I use the sound also to hear the differences for when the fish latches onto the hook, it's a different sound than the nibbling. I will look away from the TV. My kid thought I was crazy, but now she does it as well.

the "Jesus, take the wheel" approach has worked for me since city folk. (btw, glad I'm not the only one and great name for it.) I don't close my eyes, but I can't watch the screen. I look hilarious while doing it, but going off of sound and vibrations is just easier imo! Thanks for the helpful video.

I think... after testing this out just now, and I could be wrong... that the eggs are mainly 4-5 shadow sizes
You can also close your eyes, turn the volume up and press the button when you hear the fish bite down as well. This works really well too!
I also recommend mass producing fish bait and fishing on the pier.
The Oarfish doesn’t have that bad of a spawn rate, and that also allows you to sell a lot of spare fish.
Didnt even found one fish with a fin yet.

As someone who has fished A LOT in Animal Crossing, this is extremely helpful. I tend to use shadow analysis quite a bit when determining different fish from others. Sea bass are horrible, but they are bigger than the red snappers and barred knifejaws, making catching them a lot easier compared in the Gamecube edition. I also love the fact you pointed out that the size 6 shadow is more evenly distributed compared to the size 5, which is more top heavy. I didn't even notice this little detail, but now I'll keep that in mind.
There also seems to be a different, much thinner and longer shadow. I was walking along the shore, and one shadow caught my eye for being long and thin. It also behaved in a snake-like way when I reeled it in, and it turned out to be a ribbon eel!

For thumb twitch, I press my thumb next to the button. I close eyes and press into the side each bite, and with the actual bite, just slide over

Fun tip for catching rare river fish: there's an island that has insane fish spawn rates. It's a three-tier island with a waterfall as the first thing you see at the front of the island, and I personally have caught two golden trouts, three chars, four stringfish and three rows of my inventory worth of sturgeons. It's actually insanely easy to chain sturgeons, all you need to do is scare off all the fish from the second and third tiers, then head to the mouth of the river on the right and boom, sturgeon, sometimes two.
I don't have any tips for the other river fish, I got super lucky with the golden trouts, but the stringfish are at least identifiable for being the only size 5 fish, so just keep an eye out. Also, I know march is over and you can't get sturgeons anymore, so if you're gonna try it remember to set your clocks back.
Great comment, I'm currently in the Southern Hemisphere and the only rare fish that spawns is the Sturgeon and Golden Trout. Unfortunately, the golden trout spawns are hogged by Eggs :(
I got that island and recognised it as the rare fish island but I only caught carp. Nothing but carp. I caught like ten carp in a row and left. Another island just had black bass and sea bass

one of the ways i learnt to not accidentally press a was to make a the second reaction i do, i just tilt the joystick up as first reaction instead because it does nothing and an accidental hit of it wont do anything wrong. works wonders!

Do you know what the actual spawning chance is for the rare fish, once you have the correct size shadow? I have used roughly 150 bait at clifftop for the stringfish and am wondering if it is worth it.

After 2 hours I caught my first sturgeon and then my game randomly crashed and it didn’t save. But completely reset the game. So it kicked me off the island and didn’t save the catch. And I literally almost cried. I gave up after that. But I neeEED to get one

How do I catch a sea bass? It’s the only fish I need.
I have problem finding Barred Knifejaw. I’m fishing for hours at sea without any encounters. I checked that it’s available during March for Northern Hemisphere and it’s available every hour. I catch fishes of all sizes and there is no reason that I will even it. Why am I not getting even one?
It's a bit rare than usual, focus on the size 3 shadows and it should spawn every 1/10 fishes in my experience
