    Hello Don,
Thank you for this crash course in Maple pruning. Because the branches were silhouetted I was able to see with real clarity what you were doing. 10/10. 👍

Thank you so much for detailed example. I read and watched so many explanations but seeing you do it made so much sense. Now I can take care of my Amur Maple in front of the house.

Very nice. Could you just come over and take care of it for me. 😆
But in all seriousness any tips on a larger more developed tree? Short of a lift I can’t get to the 20 top on one of mine

Tree trimmer pole by Marvin fiberglass 3 sections 22' reach plus your mid height. Comes with saw, lopper pull. $150 when I bought years ago. It won't get you to the top but I've trimmed alot with this. Even standing on a shed. It's a workout depending on how big or small.
Once cut a 14" diameter arm, got blade pinched. Tied heavy nuts on a rope and threw it over, had someone pull opposite direction, finally got it out and finished. Saved me alot over the years.

Don, why are you cutting the tips of the branches?

He did that because it forces the limb to branch out more instead of having a long whip

I have a very small yard. The landscaper installed a red maple a decade ago. I have trimmed off some lower branches in the previous 10 years and I can easily walk under it. However, I am wondering if I can remove more of the lower branches next spring. Of the tree's height 2/3 of it is branches/foliage covered, the bottom third is the trunk (where I've pruned out the lower branches) Obviously it will grow more branches and foliage next spring but will it be safe to remove a few of the lower branches at that time? What is the best rule with this? Is it ok to remove lower branches as long as no more than 1/3 of the lower tree is without branches? It is overwhelming for the yard and was a poor choice on the part of the landscaper but I don't want to lose it as it is beautiful and healthy.

Can you make a video on how to prune trees to make them good climbing trees? I've looked all over TH-cam and can't find anything.

I have 4 autumn blaze maples 7’ or less. Will this pruning method work for them?

I wish that I knew someone like you who could prune a small maple tree for me. I'm completely incapable of doing anything with it and don't want to ruin it.

I have an Autumn Blaze Maple that’s around 5 or 6 years old. Maybe 25% of the branches are dead(I did check). I figured I would cut all the dead branches out. In this video you say, pruning at the wrong time can cause “stunting”. Is that something I need to worry about in my situation?

I thought you're only supposed to prune maple trees mid-summer to avoid excessive sap losS?

I was told to prune in early spring when I bought my Autumn Flame Maple. And then fertilize.

Thanks so much. I don't understand much about how the branch will develop. If a branch is cut off like you show, will this branch continue to grow longer? Or it will be short like that for the life of the tree? Thanks
