      yarpen26 Normally I don't respond to people comments but this time is very necessary. First your racism is not needed, calling people "stupid and lazy" doesn't prove your point and actually undermined it. Secondly you can't deny that Europe has been fucking with every country since the 1500s, they virtually had a trump card and exploited the fuck out of it (Not saying that any other people wouldn't do the same). And lastly, every country has corrupt leaders the U.S. had fortunately avoided a "Big fisted Boss" but managed to get schemers and embezzlement leaders. So before opening your mouth actually learn a few things.

      Americo Liberians were the ruling ethnic group of the country until they were overthrown by the jealous natives. Charles Taylor's mother was an ethnic Gola while the ethnicity of his father is unknown although their are a few weak reports that he was Americo-Liberian.
      Liberia under Americo-Liberian rule in the 70's had a per capita income equivalent to that of Japan.
      The natives were participants of the slave trade so if anything it was karma. When the first former Black Americans arrived in Liberia many of the natives were still practicing slavery.

    One thing you missed, Ethiopia was not colonized. It was a military occupation. Unlike colonized African countries, Ethiopia didn't pick up on Italian lifestyle, language, or culture. Italy's involvement in Ethiopia is comparable to Germany and France in WW2. Additionally, very few Italians moved to Ethiopia, and resistance was high. Italy did not get much out of occupying Ethiopia. They weren't even recognized by Russia, China, Mexico, America, and New Zealand.

    Liberia wasn't a colony in the sense of other African colonies "owned" by European countries. Those had a European colonial elite, military from Europe, a governor from Europe and little to no home determination. While the US heavily influenced and subsidized Liberia it was independent from the get-go. Yes, the Americo-Liberians may have been the elite of the country, but its not the same as the Boers of South Africa.

      this was the U.S reparations for the freed black slaves of which half a million americans died over. They gave them not only A NATION to rule but the tacit support and protection of the U.S, if only the native americans had such generosity given to them by the americans, a polity in their own lands, what a dream. Yet these bastards, with all of the privileges they enjoy, somehow still want more? it really was a mistake to bring them here in this continent.

Also, blacks in the Cape Province enjoyed their rights for a long time, and do not forget that the presence of whites 500 years ago, 300 years after the arrival of Bantu blacks, while black Americans came to Liberia and directly It became their property, and they represent only 2% of the people. The Italian annexation of Ethiopia was more like a short occupation than full colonization. I wouldn't say that they were ever really colonized as those four years didn't really affect the country much in the long run. It'd be like saying that Kuwait was colonized by Iraq in 1990

      To add what I said in my last comment, I wouldn't disagree with all that you said but I wouldn't also agreed with some of the things said. We were under dictatorship right from the time the return of the former slaves into our country. They were under five percent of the whole population of Liberia at that time but they ruled the country from the 1821 to 1980 when the Americans carried on the coup d'etat 1980 clamming it late Samuel Kenyan Doe. The dictatorship you referred to in the 80s was not the case.
      The late president Samuel Kenyan Doe Just took some of the leadership attitudes that were present at that time and the other tribes outside his tribe were oppressed again when they thought he came for all of them. There was only one running party, the indigenous people were not allowed to vote. Their names were changed if they wanted education or part of the country decision making at the local level. Afternoon schools schedules were created to facilities the indigenous people who wanted to go school as to work from 4am in morning till 12 noon so you can resume school at 1pm in the afternoon to 6pm and when you get home from school your working duties starts from that time to midnight . We were not allowed on the same buses, schools and even dating were restricted. I can speak for myself, my father was educated as scott his last name but when he was educating us, we used his indigenous last name because at that time, things were changing. The history of Liberia, does not have the indigenous names in it. It is all about the former slaves. We still suffer from identity crisis today in Liberia.
      We want to be everything else except Liberian. We even want to be more Americans on the continent of Africa than Liberians. So is why when you said dictatorship started when president Doe came power, I have serious problems with it. Thank you for sharing the story of Liberia, it is very unique on the continent and not most people aware of this. Were were living in our own country for centuries as slaves and all because of the slaves trade. They gave us what they received and I personally don't blame them but blame the root of slavery and the practice and the process .

    THIS IS ONE OF YOUR BEST, MM. Astounding how much info you accessed and absorbed so fluently. BTW, the older N American populations would argue that that indeed their lands were colonized. Since from the outset (Washington at Boston in 1775, in fact) the planters & lawyers (the Anglo elite) recognized the aboriginal groups indeed had some tenuous kind of legal sovereignty in their traditional economic spheres, and were to be formally addressed as such, it is no big "stretch" to say that the USA had a larger colonial empire than did any European state in Africa (but NOT in Norfamerika (Britain in Canada).

    Great video again. I really like the fair and balanced view you give to your videos. Many people overlook this part of the world as always war and poverty strucken. There was actually a great Frontline doc on Liberia and the American companies there during the civil war(s). Nice to understand the full history of a country that at the mid-point of the last century and much of the Cold War was fairly stable while much of continent were gaining independence movements and going through conflicts. I don't believe this country made country made the USA an empire in the classical sense becuase we as a nation, the USA never had a central figure govern the country like an emperor or monarch. Although up until the Republic, 1830's the American society was ruled by a single class ie the Virginia dynasty of presidents in Washington, Jefferson, Madison and Monroe who favored the settlement of Black Americans in Africa. Also by some extent Jackson who was from Tennessee and similar vain of autocratic leadership and territorial expansion. So in many ways American didn't become an empire until after the American Civil War even there in history were references to "empire" as early as the presidency of Washington and Adams. In terms of land, the American Empire was realized in Manifest Destiny in the land grab of Louisiana Purchase, Southern Territories from Mexico, annexation of the Republic of Texas and over seas territories through purchase, conquest, and bussines endeavor which ended after WWI and statehood of the 49th and 50th states to the union. Liberia was convenient ally in Africa during the Cold War era but not really colonial holding or even vassal state.

    The concept of an American empire can definitely be argued both ways in the case of Liberia, being a somewhat special case (i.e.) a colony established with the goals of providing a new homeland for freed slaves. However going a bit farther back in history we can see definite signs of attempted American imperialism in countries such as the Philippines which saw widespread American military intervention all the way to the end of WW2. Although this experiment also failed, it was much closer to "traditional" European colonialism than the Liberian case.

      This Liberia thing was really really weird. The former slaves that returned back to Africa, go on to be the elite class and the country does fairly well until the native blacks from the area get pissed and overthrow the ruling class.

    • @autumnhomer9786
      @autumnhomer9786 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott89878 Why was that weird? The ex Slaves from America went their with an idea of ruling the country, the way we have democracy here in Europe. It failed. If you look at quite a few countries in Africa, you will notice that democracy doesn't seem to work very well.

    • @Scott89878
      @Scott89878 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just think it's weird that ex slaves go back to their home continent and become the elite class over the native blacks. I'm not too surprised by it, though. Whether democracy works or not is a matter of resources. A country with a lot of oil or diamonds lends itself to dictatorships, but a country that is more balanced lends itself to democracy. Africa as a whole also suffers from outside influences, just like the middle east, often propping up dictatorships that end up being beneficial to western nations.

    *Masaman* - So again, I have to ask - did America ever have an Empire?
    *Me* - _...thinks how the video was largely a concise history of the nation of Liberia and, however very enjoyable, doesn't answer that question because 1. What is Empire, and 2. Guam, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Filipinas, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa etc...._ Umm, dunno still? But very good video. Liked it a lot. Let me correct and school you here Masaman. Ethiopia was NEVER colonized. BTW, thanks for your video.
    Basically, there was no Eritrea before the Italians invaded the first time around. The name Eritrea was given to that part of the continent by themselves. The whole region from some parts of present day Sudan, present day Eritrea, present day Djibouti and present day Somalia were all Abyssinia (Ethiopia) for hundreds of years. Eritrea was colonized by the Brits for 10 years and later by the Italians for 50 years who used it as a base of sorts to organize their further efforts of colonization. Emperor Menelik aided by his warrior queen, Empress Taytu (unfortunately because of her gender, she didn't get as much recognition as him) made sure that the Italians didn't conquer Ethiopia by decisively defeating them on the battle of Adwa at 1896 in a single day 💪. Thousands were killed on both sides. The Emperor could't and didn't chase them out of their base in Eritrea after the battle of Adwa because of a number of logistical reasons.
    The Italians didn't come back to invade Ethiopia until 1935 (almost 40 years later) and successfully OCCUPIED it but did not colonize it and they did that by using a banned and illegal warfare chemical agent known as mustard gas. For 5 years the Italians in Ethiopia faced massive resistance by the Ethiopian fighters mainly in the countrysides. They were ousted 5 years later by the help of the English. This was a long story made short. 👌

    Liberia, my home country, Bassa my tribe. Survivor of the Charles Taylor Civil War. I was there from the beginning of the war. I was there until Charles Taylor Rebels forces made it to Monrovia, we walked from Liberia to Sierra Leone 3 and half weeks of walking and going through Rebels check-points. Spend two years in Refugees camps in Sierra Leone.. I still remember walking across that Sierra Leone Bridge thinking the Rebels might shoots us all down before we made it across at 9 years old. Sitting in America now thanks to my father coming to get my sister and I and my mother for protecting us through the war!!!

    2:22 The map of slavery trade-routes should have the thickest arrows of slaves going through Islamic countries, as slavery lasted longer and harder under Islam. Almost all were CASTRATED, so you will not see a Black face in Iraq or Tunisia today.
    Also, you should mention that the Amero-Liberians enslaved their African brethren. Unlike in the U.S., slavery was only made illegal in Liberia in...wait for it...1930.

    I wouldn’t call it an American colony. It was more of a project by the American Colonization Society, which wasn’t a government group. It was never under the administration of the US government, so it can’t really be said to have been a colony, territory, or part of the United States. Nonetheless, the American connection can not be ignored, as it has always shaped the history of this fascinating country.

    If it were up to me I would have found an island with a large capacity for population but not nearly as many people as it can hold, and then give the option, even with some incentives, for Black Americans to move to it in the 1870s. Liberia was guaranteed issues with the whole native Liberians vs Americo-Liberians. Islands that were uninhabited before European exploration often had the capacity for a decent sized population but previously no one had found yet for their relative remoteness. Mauritius was uninhabited before the Portuguese established a base. Nowadays it has 1.25 million people. A place like that would have allowed for less cultural and ethnic divides.

      Liberia under the ALs was in no way comparable to the Apartheid South Africa which was indeed benefitial to the local blacks. The ALs didn't give two shits about the natives, they continued their pisspoor existence exactly the same way they had for centuries prior. Hell, even the ALs themselves were hardly civilized: their almost entire economic development was driven by mindless extraction of natural resources (whereas South Africa was a booming technological hub), more often than not sold left and right to the European and American companies for a quick cash-grab. They produced _no_ literature, there are hardly even any photos of Liberia under their rule. They were just your typical African "elite": self-obsessed, stupid and lazy.
      The natives, of course, weren't better. But Liberia would have gone to shits either way. Hell, it has _always_ been in shits.

    Interesting video, but a couple of errors regarding Doe, or rather his demise. He was neither executed publicly or beheaded. He was tortures on video, but it was generally accepted that he died from blood loss, partly from the torture, but more likely from the wounds he received during his earlier capture at Monrovia port. The confusion is added to, intentionally or otherwise, by the juxtaposition of the commentary over a frame of the public shooting on the beach of members of the cabinet of President Tolbert Tolbert, the President himself having been murdered during the coup.
