I am almost restoring my pair of AR28s's that I bought new. They lived in my parent's house for a while and dried up . . . the tweeters sounded horrible and one was cracked. The woofer surrounds in shreds and the vinyl 'woodgrain' dull and torn.
I replaced the tweeters from an online source, refoamed the woofers, replaced the 8mF caps with audiophile grade capacitors, and stripped the vinyl and refinished with a glossy, piano-black paint job.
They sound AWESOME. Clear as a bell, as good as my Dahlquists DQ-10 . . . just can't be pushed as hard.

What a great interview! I have my dad's Dynakit ST-70 & PAS-2 that he built in 1961 (right before I was born) that I've had restored. Sounds fantastic! Every time on my birthday, he would say "My stereo is XX years old today". He also had a Thorens TD-124 bought new at the same time. It was very sensitive, he wouldn't let me touch it after the first time I let the tonearm down too hard and it skated across the record! Unfortunately, he traded the TD-124 in 1971 (FOR $25.00!!!) towards the purchase of a plastic BIC turntable (still have that too). Oh well.
I've got a lot of other vintage - newish gear. Among the other gear, I still have my Pioneer SX-780 receiver, PL-530 turntable & HPM-40's (all restored) I bought at Pacific Stereo when I was 15 - still rocks hard!
What brand are those equipment stands? I really like those... I'm having a hard time finding good looking, solid, affordable racks for my equipment. I'm currently using rolling commercial wire shelving with 1 3/4" thick maple cutting boards supporting the components. It works OK, but would like to upgrade to better looking units.

I had a pair of 2AX’s given to me with cheap aftermarket woofers. The original baskets were in included but the cones were removed. Took them to my local vintage HiFi shop, The Turntable. Had modern binding posts installed, also re-coned the original baskets. This was during the pandemic a tech who works for Clair Bros was moonlighting there. He rebuilt the x-overs. No matter what I use to run them, still the best speaker in my collection.

Interesting story....my father had a single AR2 in his mono hi-fi system in the early '60. Amp and tuner were Pilot brand with a Garrard record changer (tonearm head the size of a buick). I'm sure he purchased the system at Sol Green's shop in Corpus Christi. I kept the AR2 and modified it to a three way (Radio Shack drivers) and used it until around 2013 as my center channel. It went out out to pasture at Goodwill.....the woofer was smooth and had great low end.

I saw a Variac (a variable autoformer to vary the AC line voltage) in the system, likely to lower the line voltage fed into the vintage tube equipment. AC line voltage when that tube equipment was designed in the late 50’s and early 60’s was 115-117 VAC. Today, most line voltages measure 123-126 VAC. That would drive the vacuum tubes beyond their limits, shortening their life, and the power supply electrolytic capacitor into danger territory. John was very smart using a Variac to lower his line voltage to preserve his vintage equipment. Variacs, however, are large, heavy, expensive, and tend to self-hum and vibrate. A bucking transformer is better, smaller, cheaper, quieter solution to this problem but nobody, that I know of actually makes one. Luckily, they are easy to build if you’re handy and can read a simple schematic. Though plans are easily found on the web, Blueglow Electronics here on TH-cam has an excellent video explaining how a bucking transformer works, and how to build one. Every vintage tube equipment owner should absolutely use one.

Steve: Here’s an idea for one of your upcoming episodes….
How about talking about the similarities and differences among audiophiles in the US vs the UK vs. Europe vs. Asia, etc. You could talk about market dynamics from both a dealer network and a customer (i.e., audiophile) perspective. You could even consider doing it as part of an expert panel including Herb, John Devore, etc. Maybe even ask your global viewers for their insights? It could be a very interesting episode …for what its worth?

Only recently have TH-cam reviewers taken back the word and lightened up its meaning. It's simply one who "CARES" about audio. It's not the status of the gear..... Now I'm nostalgic for the system my dad had in the 1970s. I don't recall the models, but iirc it was a Dual turntable, Kenwood receiver, ancient Sherwood tuner from a time when you bought the chassis and case separately, and AR-3As. I don't know what cartridge he used.
Among my earliest listening experiences were classic R&B and rock music from, say 1955 to 1975. I jumped the fuses in the back of the speakers so I could really crank them, and I used to watch those big woofers kick back and forth. They really danced to Led Zeppelin II.
It wasn't all roses, though. He beat the hell out of me when he found out I had jumpered the speakers. Was it worth it? I'm going to say yes.

Dovetails with my story that Steve filmed a couple years ago: dads AR2A's and yes they did get blasted for three hours (read: latchkey kid) every day. Plus an Eico ST70 and Heathkit tuner. Unfortunately the AR's went into the bin sometime when I was in college. Cabinets were immaculate, but the crossover was not working correctly and neither he nor I could figure out how the sealed cabinet was to be opened- never occurred to us to take off the grill cloth. They must have sold thousands of those speakers in the 60's. Doesn't seem like sealed cabinets are a thing any more?

The ar2ax is a really good speaker, I've refoamed them and done work on some, the potentiometers on the back usually need cleaned or replaced is what the problem probably was in your case, and it's bigger brother the ar3a is the legend that made them really famous.

@@meutubedou He did say Receiver, and you’re talking about an integrated amp. There is a distinct difference. ✌🏾

@@meutubedou I had no malicious intent w/my comment. I was simply pointing out the distinction. Your comment began w/“WRONG” in response to comment, and the discussed a different type of gear. That’s all. It seemed like you were trolling. I was not trolling. A little too sensitive maybe? How was I being arrogant? Just stating a fact. I’m sure you know the difference between an integrated amp and a receiver. No one was questioning your knowledge. I’m older than you btw, if it matters.

@@meutubedou Thank you sir. Accepted and much appreciated. No worries. I wasn’t trying to be mean. I owned a Pioneer SX6000 in ‘72. And I don’t recall ever using it to listen to radio. Maybe once or twice for FM. I loved the sound of that receiver and wish I still had it. Happy listening. ✌🏾

This is another guy who knows that decades of constantly "new and improved" latest reviewer recommended products is all just piss-in-the-wind, pandering. And that some of the all time great classics are every bit if not more musical despite Stereophile and Absolute Sound reviewers telling us year after year that the newest and latest products were better.

I thought I was an audiophile 40 years ago when I bought my Harman/Kardon/Infinity system, and was so satisfied with it I didn't continue buying audio gear. I have recently sold my old system and am building a new one. In my opinion, keeping equipment for 40 years does not an audiophile make.

You can’t be a true Ramones fan unless you’ve seen them live. Nothing captured the intensity. I will be looking for this film.

Hung up on the cables? That's sad. He's an audiophile. It's about the sound and enjoyment, not what you deem correct. Enjoy your expensive cables that nobody gives a s*** about but you.
