Length makes a big difference. Length is changed by putting different size pipes between the header and pipe. The orientation of the exhaust outlet doesn’t change anything. The expansion pipe inside goes into a can which reduces noise. The can is welded to the end of the expansion pipe. Its for regulations. ideally there would be no can like a dirt bike or shifter kart pipe which have stinger sections on the end of the cone. Those have slip on pass through silencers that flow alot better.
Its something you have to do to warm up certain engines as they would just stop again in lower rev ranges. But you dont want to just give it full power to warm it up so they ease it into warming up
