- The Duke of York’s alleged links with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein are set to come under further scrutiny with the release of hundreds of files from a defamation case.
US Judge Loretta Preska ruled on Monday that documents relating to more than 170 people who were either associates, friends or victims of disgraced financier Epstein should be made public.
They include 40 documents of evidence from Johanna Sjoberg, who has claimed Prince Andrew touched her breast while sitting on a couch inside the US billionaire’s Manhattan apartment in 2001.
Royal biographer Tom Bower joins Talk Today to analyse the contentious development regarding the Royals.
"Prince Andrew is a permanent time bomb because, after this case, there will be another one - for sure," he says.

I completely agree. The king should clear the paths, by eliminating obstacles and overhanging projections, if he wants the monarchy to continue and succeed.

I find it hard to believe that over the years the Queen and Prince Charles knew absolutely nothing about Andrew’s dodgy friendships and sexual activities. Sunak flat out refused to support the bill,enabling a Parliamentary committee to remove Royal titles. Now that is dead. Removing them from the Royal website will only give Harry & his wife more attention than they deserve. Plus, it will achieve nothing, in terms of the curbing duo’s damaging attacks on TRF.

The problem is that traditionally, the RF members could get away with a lot of things that the public would know nothing about. The advent of social media and smaller cameras has meant that, like everyone else, they can be held more accountable for unwanted behaviour and this will get worse. Years ago, the press would have been shut down, the public in the dark. The main interest of any Monarch is to keep on the throne and to make sure it is all handed down to future generations. Like them or loathe them, this is a fact. Where other public figures may survive embarrassment, or admit errors, apologise and move on, this is not the case with the RF. So, it is inevitable, that unless they behave with exemplary caution, they are liable to face extortion. The only way to cope with that is to have the strength to say 'publish and be damned!' Admit mistakes and they can't be dangled like a sword over your head and if it is a truly appalling situation, pretty much exile the person involved. I think next year should be rather interesting and many rich and powerful people are going to have a rather uncomfortable Christmas.

I think Queen Elizabeth was truly a great lady and exceptional monarch but not mistake proof. She did pay Andrew's accuser trying to keep that scandal quiet (it will never be quiet) and agreed to let Harry marry "the thing" which was a huge mistake. Granting them their titles of Duke and Duchess that they are now exploiting was also a mistake. I do think that she had a really bad situation on her hands with the Markels, though. I've always thought that when a person/company offers to settle out of court they are on a sticky wicket if it did go to court because if it did it would cost them even more so they make an offer hoping the other party will accept and not want it dragged out any longer. He is a deeply religious man who takes seriously the importance of forgiveness . I don’t know how widely the particulars of his childhood may be in this group, but he was gentle, shy, polite and kind almost from the cradle, and very unfortunately both his parents found such a temperament strange, even perhaps alarming for a BOY. Prince Philip was extremely strict with him as a result and it amounted to genuine trauma and suffering.

Look at reckless King Edward, with his hundreds of mistresses. The public forgave him because he was nice to everyone from every walk of life and he even looked after all of his women. Even his wife Alexandra allowed him to sleep around. That suggests Edward to be very entitled, yet he was forgiven because he did not act entitled and never looked down on anyone. That is a lesson that Andrew never learned growing up. Even though her younger kids were spoiled by Queen Elizabeth, it is funny how our Prince Edward turned out to be the opposite of Prince Andrew! I understand the desire to speculate - but there are many reasons one might avoid a trial ... especially for someone who has never had to do difficult things and money is readily available. Taking the easier way doesn't necessarily suggest guilt - it may simply be reflective of a life of ease and privilege.

Titles, line of succession and COS can only be removed by Parliament passing legislation to allow it. William would have no more authority than his father, they are both constrained by Constitutional Law and answerable to Parliament.

IMO, Prince Andrew had no choice but to settle with V.G. It was her late Majesty's Platinum Jubilee and she was in very poor health. The Americans went after P. Andrew knowing he was an easy/soft 'target', whilst people like Clinton, Gates and other 'powerful' people from Business and Judiciary weren't touched !!!! Having said that, it also has to be mentioned that V.G. case was not strong enough to go to Criminal Court, her 'victory', (pushed hard by her American lawyers and to divert attention away from the likes of Clinton and Gates) instead, went through Civil court. There is much less evidence needed and generally is based upon 'the balance of probability' ‼ This isn't true justice, especially as it wasn't tried in a criminal court of law.
