Stein's father was a mechanic. At school in Frankfurt, he studied piano, oboe, and singing. Later, he continued studies at the university in Cologne, including lessons in composition with Busoni's disciple Philipp Jarnach. From 1947 to 1951, he was a repetiteur in Wuppertal.
In 1955, at the invitation of Erich Kleiber, Stein conducted at the opening of the restored Berlin State Opera (Unter den Linden), and subsequently worked there as a Staatskapellmeister. From 1961 to 1963, he worked under the leadership of Rolf Liebermann as deputy chief conductor at the Hamburg State Opera. From 1963 to 1970, Stein served as chief conductor and director of opera at the Mannheim National Theatre. Stein held a regular post at the Vienna State Opera from 1969 to 1971, where he conducted 500 performances. He returned to the Hamburg State Opera as General Music Director from 1972 to 1977.
In 1952, Stein began work as a conducting assistant at the Bayreuth Festival to such conductors as Joseph Keilberth, Hans Knappertsbusch, Clemens Krauss and Herbert von Karajan. From 1969 to 1986, he conducted 76 performances there, including the 1983 Bayreuth centenary production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
He held principal conducting positions with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva, the Basel Symphony Orchestra and the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo. He was especially associated with the music of Max Reger and recorded several Reger works, besides many works of the German Romantic period. He spent much time training young conductors.

Such a beautiful opening to this symphony. Might be my favorite Mozart symphony overall, even above the great 40, 41 or 38.

Sadly Horst Stein was very unestimated like conductor, but he was really a genius underappreciated. Great performance.

Stein may not have had the notoriety and star power of many contemporaries, but he was an excellent conductor. This performance makes that clear.

Mozart wrote 41 symphonies, for some reason, I enjoy this one the most. I can't stand when they break down the orchestra to a smaller group, why? Here we get the full experience of a great 50+ piece symphony orchestra. I also respect LOFTmusic for placing the ads in between the movements.

This is also one of my favorite symphonies. The others are #31, 40 & 41. He wrote the Linz in a carriage on a bumpy road in in 4 days! He complained to his sister Nannerl that he could write faster if he had an instument to stamp in the notes.

Mr. Stein is not a photogenic or handsome conductor but music he creates matches the beauty of it. His interpretation reminds me of Mr. Walter and his collaboration with Columbia Symphony.

Looks are overrated. Compare British and American actors.Or singers: one of our favorite British singers is Emma Kirkby, who can sing circles around America’s most popular. But she only sings classical music. Then, the rising Czech star Patricia Janeckova who must be the best and most beautiful opera singer now!

yet he looks like a real maestro, he radiates music, deep musical feeling, knowledge and above all his love for it.

Great interpretation. Sonically well balanced and perfect inner metronome but needed to slow down right at the end so that we could enjoy the orgasm from 32:45
