So this one is pretty good...my only real issue with it is his take on Sputnik starting at about 16:45. Like most people, Oversimplified only knows the mythology of Sputnik...that people were freaked out by it because it somehow surprised us or showed that we were significantly behind the USSR in space tech. The truth is that the US government was not surprised, and Eisenhower actually preferred the USSR orbit a satellite first, since that would establish the Freedom of Space. In fact, Eisenhower deliberately slowed down the progress of the US efforts to orbit a satellite, both to allow the USSR to go first and because the US team that led the race was run by former Nazi Werner Von Braun, at least in part.
In reality, Von Braun's team could have orbited a satellite before the Soviets, had they been given the go ahead. And the only thing that the USSR was ahead of us in as far as space and ICBMs was the raw throw weight of their R-7 booster. Nobody in the USA freaked out about Sputnik at all until opportunistic politicians started spreading terrifying stories about a "missile gap" through their minions in the press. It was a perfect example of the military industrial complex at work...just like the earlier scare about a mythological "bomber gap", with politicians working with the military and industry to sell a story about the US being behind and needing more federal funding for weapons research and deployment, and many other new programs to regain our supposedly lost lead. 🖖💯✌
