Hell Yeah, glad you like what you're seeing. Thanks for the careful and close look. A few things for folks to know: auto misses can be mitigated by Stamina spends, and there ARE rules for using board game maps in the Core book. Cheers!
I really liked the Modiphious Entertainment Conan game. It flowed really well. For folks saying it was "crunchy" either didn't play it or didn't understand it. It is WAY less crunchy compared to games such as D&D 5e, Pathfinder 2e, etc, and those seem to be the golden standards of TTRPGs. From what I am seeing in this Monolith game the rules look a bit weird at first, but I will keep an eye on it and am excited to try it with a group that knows what they're doing.
Thank you so much for this video. It's been very frustrating trying to find people's thoughts about this online, only to find too many conversations derailed by the player safety sidebar on page six. So many people act like it limits what you're allowed to do in the game, when in reality it just says "make sure everyone's on the same page".
@rydiafan1 No problem. Personally I find it completely superfluous (the space could have been better served with a picture of a warrior babe in a chain mail bikini), but since it doesn't impact the game mechanics it's ultimately a minor point.
I total agree with you about the modiphius Conan. ... I like the rules of the quickstart, but one thing I don't like is the Flex die. It rolls too much without benefit. There are more fun ways to do things like that.
@@Zerosum716True though I think for Conan, super crunchy isn’t a good lane. STA has the same dice system but has six attributes, six skills, plus some talents and focuses to differentiate characters. It’s relatively fast and doesn’t have irritating things like hit location or talent trees.
Regarding removing game rules, I saw a comment about that recently that went something like, "I'm an automechanic and restore cars, and compare this to RPG rules. There is buying a classic car and adding current technology features and modern comforts. There is buying a modern car and tweaking it to push it even further to the level I like. And then there is buying a modern car and being expected to completely overhaul it just to do the most basic things a car should do."
Attribute die size and attribute score is redundant. Just scale the difficulty target number and use die size, or else pick a die size for everyone all the time and only have attribute scores. Flex die is unnecessary because the effects can done with stamina points. They should’ve stuck with the board game rules and expanded it for an rpg.
sounds like savage worlds lite meets barbarians of lemuria. is there anything in it to bring out Hyborea? im currently adapting Dragonbane for the world of conan using the Xoth rules
Without being able to look at the full rules yet (the origins, full magic system and such) it's hard to say. If you've already got a conversion started I'd stick to that until such time as the complete RPG is available.
What are your thoughts on bronze weapons and armor vs iron weapons and armor vs steel weapons and armor. Should there be a damage differential, different weights but same damage, or just differences in rarity?
Depends on the level of abstraction of the system you're using; I would need to see the full CtHA rules to decide in that case. In general I find having bronze and iron as the default and "masterwork" gear to be steel works for most S&S settings. For example in Barbarians of Lemuria I always consider the 1st level or "common" alchemical armor and weapons to be steel, which means those forgers who can create the metal would also need at least a bit of secret knowledge to do so. The Riddle of Steel, if you will...
@Inquisitor_Lelouch I can understand that. It's definitely not going for the same direction either of those were. I doubt it will replace Barbarians of Lemuria as my go to rules light S&S game but we'll see as things develop.
To be fair, the nasty dark stuff is going to be in the full rules. This was just for the one pregen. As for boardgamish, I honestly get that vibe from the 2d20 game far more than this.

Always good to get more use from those maps.

I ran this for my group the weekend it released. They loved it and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm going to be backing this eagerly.

Agree with you on the Flex die, sounds unthematic for a Conan game. Hopefully they rethink that (and maybe some other terminology too)
I do wish Modiphius had done a more narrative style and much less crunchy version. The STA ruleset is about perfect in terms of options.
@@crimfan I just wished they'd picked a damn lane and stuck to it.

Ah, so this game is why Adventurer Conqueror King System (Imperial Edition) couldn't get the rights for a Hyborian Age supplement.
@accessyourinnerlight971 Sadly. I would have loved to see it. That and one made by the Design Mechanism people for Mythras.
Lol. Modiphius and "high quality" products xD
Have you seen Siege Of The Citadel?
They're very pretty looking is all I'm saying. 😜

White magic is a term used by Howard in the Conan stories. Can't really help that.
