Hey Sambita and thanks for the great question. This is definitely possible and the finnish immigration service does allow this. However, if you do this, i would advice you to be very mindful with your finances. Make a detailed budget so that you know how much money you need to live in Finland (on top of the mandated 560€/month) and how many hours per month you would need to work in order to reach this sum. Also, if i were you, i would start looking for a job way before the second academic year starts. Especially if you are aiming for a job in your field instead of something like food delivery. Job application processes in Finland do tend to take a while (3-6 months) especially when you apply for your first jobs so just keep this in mind. If you are interested, im actually working on a paid course where i go through everything that you need to know about job hunting in Finland. The goal of the course is to speed up your job hunting process by months. The course is going to be around 5 hours of material so i have to make it paid, but it should pay itself back the second that you get your first pay. Hi, I have secured an admission Bachelors degree in one of the universities in Finland. I have been offered a 40% percent scholarship slashing my tuition to around 6000€ atleast for the first year. After first year the scholarship will be awarded based on required credits in the previous year. I assuming I maintain the scholarship, will be able to to raise my tuition and stipend the rest of the years of study? Take note that I have prior 5+ experience in Software Development back home. My second question is, If I move together with my spouse, is she gonna be allowed to work whilst am doing school?

Thats a great question! This would naturally depend on you personally, but as a hardworking student you should have no problems completing 60 credits per academic year. That is the normative (normal) pace of ones studies and the curriculum has been built to support that 👍. About jobs in the Oulu region, im sure that you can find part-time work there. Oulu is a very large city and an important hub in the northern part of Finland so should have good job opportunities not only during your studies but also after graduation. Im not saying that this is going to be easy, BUT i think it should definitely be possible. I will look into this a bit deeper when i do the research for future videos about job hunting and i hope that ill get you some answers at latest in those videos. How does this sound?

If you are unsure about this, please contact the finnish immigration service for details.
Oh its definitely a lot even for Finns. This is why i advice everyone to fight hard and do everything in their power to get a scholarship. Anyone can do it, but it does require a lot of effort.

Hey thilina and thanks for the great question. This topic is a bit too complicated for me to give a meaningful answer so i have to simplify this quite a bit. 1. Yes, you can definitely cover your living expenses with two salaries even if one is part-time. How much you will be able to save for the future would naturally depend on the level of salary for each of you + the level of your living expenses. Do note that your salary is going to be the most expensive part of your monthly costs. 2. As a general rule of thumb, its not easy to find a job as an international person in Finland. This is mostly because you need a lot of information about where, how and when to apply for jobs. However, how difficult it is to find a job would depend on the field and your prior experience. If you are interested, im currently working on a comprehensive job hunting course that will cover everything that you need to know to succeed in your job search in Finland. Is it possible to take a private student loans or government based grants/loans? I won't be able to work while full-time study, I'll miss classes or fail them. Does this mean studying Finland is not an option? I study in the US and get many sources of loans and grants from the government and they also provide grants and loans for studying aboard but not for Finland. I don't mind being in great debt taking out private student loans in Finland/US because I do engineering major and able to pay off the debt after getting degree and job to pay the debt.

Hey Leiriane and thanks for such an interesting question! I have to say that i have not encountered this topic before so i dont have a direct answer to this. My first suggestion is that you should contact interesting universities directly via email because their admission services will know the answer to this 100% sure. However, my gut feeling is that you have to do a separate Master's degree in order to continue to a PhD. This would be most logical for me because even if you have done some courses that are similar to what a Master's degree contains, those are most likely not comparable to a Master's degree per say. Im pretty sure that this is the way it goes because it would feel very weird for me that anyone could continue directly to a PhD without having formally completed a Master's. [update] one thing that came to mind: it might be possible that the Finnish university might accept some of your courses into your Master's degree (if they are equivalent of those that you would do here) however im pretty sure that this will not apply to the majority of courses. Again, you need to check this with the universities directly.

Based on the same formula as i used in the video that i doable. Also good to take into account that the lower your income, the lower your tax burden. I dont have the exact net sum right now for you based on those expenses but i think it could be doable. This would of course depend on how fast you are able to find a job once you arrive in finland. You mentioned that you are an engineering student in brazil. So does this mean that you are already studying engineering?

Oh that is cool! If you are able to finish your first year in material engineering you could actually try to look for basic engineering jobs or something similar. Im cant guarantee that you'll be hired to these kind of jobs BUT if you were able, they would pay way more than these basic jobs that ive mentioned. Just out of curiosity, i hope you dont mind me asking, are you not that interested in engineering or what has made you to consider chancing the fields altogether?
@@RoadtoFinnish I don't know how easy it is to find an engineering job in finland but in Brazil I would require at least 2 to 3 years into the course to be able to find a good stage with a well developed academic curriculum. I choose my course based on job market opportunities here in my country and my interest in sciences, however I also am pretty compelled by international relations since I participate in exchange programs and host people from around the world(there comes my finnish friendships). I'm considering finnish universities because of the affordable prices for me and the incentive for international students. Lapland, kajaani and oulu are the ones that im most interest in! Right so in Finland finding a job in engineering would depend on your specialisation + how good you are at what you do. Its not guaranteed that you could find a job in engineering, but i would not count that out either. It all depends on you. Your background sounds really interesting and i think that applying for a bachelors in tourism is an interesting choice. However, i would also recommend that you check out the different bachelors programmes in engineering that Finnish universities offer. There arent that many bachelors degrees in engineering that are taught in english, but one school that has these programmes is Aalto university. The tuition fees for Aalto are pretty darn high, but graduation from Aalto university as a masters in engineering would give you excellent career options around the world. If you are interested in looking at degrees in engineering, my suggestion is to apply to Aalto and try to get a scholarship to pay your tuition fees. Hey Faridad and thanks for the question. You could do the math by doing the same calculations as i did in this video but by replacing the 12,000€ with 4,000€ or 8,000€. The problem is that i would need to start calculating the approximated taxes for the needed net salaries and it would take me a long time to do this because 4000 and 8000 are pretty far from each other. As a general rule of thumb, it does not matter how low the tuition fees are, you should *not* try to rely on a part-time salary to pay for them. It is simply not realistic especially in the first years of your studies (especially taking into account what i said in the video about the immigration service not allowing you to rely on a salary during the first year of your studies). Doing school full-time is hard enough so trying to cram in 25 hours of work at the same time is, in my personal opinion, not possible. Please take into account that this is why Finnish universities have good scholarship options for non EU and non EAA citizens. If you cant afford paying for tuition, those scholarships are your best bet.

Thanks so much for the question. So i get this all the time and i always give the same answer because i dont know people's backgrounds in terms of their previous education and finances. So please bear with me. My general answer to this question is that it is not possible for you to sustain your monthly expenses in the beginning of your studies especially if you live in the capital region. This is because its simply too difficult (to most) to find a job that pays well enough (after taxes) to pay for ones' living costs. There are multiple reasons here so i cant go in depth into the topic. However, take the example of restaurant jobs. Most higher end restaurants (that also pay better salaries) require you to have a vocational degree in hospitality or in the catering business and they do not hire people without such degrees. This does naturally not apply to more low-key places like most cafeterias, fast-food and normal lunch places BUT those places also pay a bit less in salary. Again, this is not as black-and-white as i might make it seem but i think its better for me to stay conservative with my answers because anyone can read these and i dont want to give a too much of a optimistic impression of the situation. Having said all of this, i would also like to note that this situation gets much easier the further you get in your studies. For example, this is not as big of an issue for master's degree students because people doing their master's already have skills that some employers in their fields want to utilise. So the further you get in your studies, the more likely it is that you are able to find a job in the field of your studies - jobs which will inherently pay better. Again - all of this simplifies the issue quite extensively BUT if you want a good rule of thumb, i would say that you should not expect to find a job that pays well enough at least during your first 1,5 years in Finland. If i break this down it would mean that i would not even recommend anyone to APPLY for jobs during their first year (with the exception of summer jobs) and if you start looking for a part-time job at the end of your first year, it will most likely take 3-5 months until you sign your first employment contract. I hope this makes any sense. I do not recommend looking for a job during your first year simply because there are already enough things that you need to get used to in your new life and studies in Finland and adding the pressure of a job on top of that might not be a good idea (just my opinion). Sorry for the rambling answer. I hope you get at least something out of this 😏

In order to apply for a residence permit, you need to have sufficient financial funds to finance your stay in Finland. The exact terms on how much money you need can be found from this website: migri.fi/en/means-of-support The requirement for the bank account in which you need to have those funds is simply that it has to be fully controlled by you. So it cant be an account controlled by e.g. your parents. This is because those funds need to be solely for your living expenses in Finland. Do let me know if i misunderstood the question.
I've read on the (study.fi) website that you could study for free if you took it in finnish or swedish, even if you were from outside of (EU union+EEA).

Mmm that is also a great question. I would assume they might ask you for documents relating to your husbands education, both of your residence permit etc.. Im not 100% sure but the documents i have listed below are the ones that Aalto university instruct their students to have when they arrive to Finland. I would guess that physical copies are the best: *EU-citizens:* - European Health Insurance Card - letter of acceptance from Aalto - proof of financial means to support your studies (for example Certificate of your Erasmus grant) -f ew passport-sized photographs - prescriptions if you are on medication - some euros (cash). *Non-EU Citizens:* - proof of health insurance, - letter of acceptance from Aalto - proof of financial means to support your studies - few passport-sized photographs - prescriptions if you are on medication and - some euros (cash)

Unfortunately its impossible for me to answer this question because of a few reasons: 1) the minimum requirements for scholarships are not publicised by the universities so i cant say for sure how they actually assess the applicants, and 2) your IELTS and GPA are not the only things that are being assessed when considering who should the scholarships be granted to. You would need to ask this question from someone who has practical experience in granting scholarships. Unfortunately i do not have that experience 😕

Oh i think this sounds a bit odd. I dont have any personal experience here because you do not get to publish anything, especially peer-reviewed, as a master's student. So you would need to be a phd student to even think about this. Having said this, i dont see any reason why it would be easier to publich research as a STEM researcher. There is plenty of economics research that is published all the time both from researchers and phd students.

Hey man and thanks for the question! First of all, please call me Oliver. We Finns like to keep things quite informal and we do not address each other by our last names or by titles. So no need to call me sir 👍. To your question, its very hard for me to say about part-time job opportunities in Kuopio because i have no personal experience + i would need to know a lot about your personal background and prior work experience. However, what i can say is that you should not rely financially on getting a part-time job during your studies. As i showed in this video, you would need to get a highly paid job in order to pay for your living costs with your salary. Taking into account that you are (presumably) a high school graduate (assuming so because you are applying for a bachelor's degree), it is not realistic to assume that you would find a job in your field before you have progressed significantly with your degree. It is quite normal that people find their first jobs in their field only after their first or second year of studies. This applies to every city in Finland so its not about Kuopio per say. So if you are looking for a part-time job to do alongside your studies, you should be looking at basic, lower level customer service jobs. They do not pay that well in the beginning but its better than nothing.

About scholarships: every english taught bachelors and masters degree programme in finland does offer scholarships for their best applicants (so not for everyone). The scholarships, how many there are, how large the scholarships are, when and how to apply for them depend on the school and the degree you are applying for. So please refer to the webpage of the specific school that you are applying to for more detailed information.

Yeah, unfortunately those kind of degrees arent that common in Finland. I do know that we have excellent sports science degrees at a master's level (at the university of eastern Finland if im not mistaken) but i dont remember too many english taught bachelors level degrees. However, i would encourage you to check out the bachelor's degree programme in physiotherapy at the SAMT university of applied sciences. This programme is in english and its not that expensive considering the scholarship options. While the annual tuition fee is relatively high (almost 10,000€), they have a 50% scholarship for the best 20% of students every year. So if you are committed to study hard, this would be a great option! Hey Jahin and thanks for another great question. Unfortunately i cant say anything about this because i have no information on the minimum requirements for the different scholarships. In addition, this information is not public and universities are not required to share it to the public. Also as a note, if you find anyone saying on the web (e.g. on Reddit) that the minimum SAT score for a scholarship is X or Y, they dont know what they are talking about. This is because the minimum scores vary from year to year. So yes, you might get a benchmark from people who applied previously, but i would not trust those numbers to be true this year. So its impossible to say for sure. However, having said that, you seem to have an excellent background and it seems that you have a good starting point. Again, referring to your earlier question, i would simply apply and see how it goes. This will give you a good idea of what to expect.

I would also recommend that if you have any questions about the application process or the scores, you could always try to contact aalto university admission services at aalto@admissions.fi . Again, they will not be able to share you any more numbers that they already have on their website but at least they will be able to give you definite answers to many questions regarding the application process itself.

Hey Sambita and thanks for the great question. This is definitely possible and the finnish immigration service does allow this. However, if you do this, i would advice you to be very mindful with your finances. Make a detailed budget so that you know how much money you need to live in Finland (on top of the mandated 560€/month) and how many hours per month you would need to work in order to reach this sum.
Also, if i were you, i would start looking for a job way before the second academic year starts. Especially if you are aiming for a job in your field instead of something like food delivery. Job application processes in Finland do tend to take a while (3-6 months) especially when you apply for your first jobs so just keep this in mind.
If you are interested, im actually working on a paid course where i go through everything that you need to know about job hunting in Finland. The goal of the course is to speed up your job hunting process by months. The course is going to be around 5 hours of material so i have to make it paid, but it should pay itself back the second that you get your first pay. Hi, I have secured an admission Bachelors degree in one of the universities in Finland. I have been offered a 40% percent scholarship slashing my tuition to around 6000€ atleast for the first year. After first year the scholarship will be awarded based on required credits in the previous year. Thats a great question! This would naturally depend on you personally, but as a hardworking student you should have no problems completing 60 credits per academic year. That is the normative (normal) pace of ones studies and the curriculum has been built to support that 👍.
About jobs in the Oulu region, im sure that you can find part-time work there. Oulu is a very large city and an important hub in the northern part of Finland so should have good job opportunities not only during your studies but also after graduation. Im not saying that this is going to be easy, BUT i think it should definitely be possible.
I will look into this a bit deeper when i do the research for future videos about job hunting and i hope that ill get you some answers at latest in those videos. How does this sound?

Hey thilina and thanks for the great question. This topic is a bit too complicated for me to give a meaningful answer so i have to simplify this quite a bit.
1. Yes, you can definitely cover your living expenses with two salaries even if one is part-time. How much you will be able to save for the future would naturally depend on the level of salary for each of you + the level of your living expenses. Do note that your salary is going to be the most expensive part of your monthly costs.
2. As a general rule of thumb, its not easy to find a job as an international person in Finland. This is mostly because you need a lot of information about where, how and when to apply for jobs. However, how difficult it is to find a job would depend on the field and your prior experience. If you are interested, im currently working on a comprehensive job hunting course that will cover everything that you need to know to succeed in your job search in Finland. Is it possible to take a private student loans or government based grants/loans? I won't be able to work while full-time study, I'll miss classes or fail them. Does this mean studying Finland is not an option? I study in the US and get many sources of loans and grants from the government and they also provide grants and loans for studying aboard but not for Finland. I don't mind being in great debt taking out private student loans in Finland/US because I do engineering major and able to pay off the debt after getting degree and job to pay the debt.

Hey Leiriane and thanks for such an interesting question! I have to say that i have not encountered this topic before so i dont have a direct answer to this. My first suggestion is that you should contact interesting universities directly via email because their admission services will know the answer to this 100% sure. However, my gut feeling is that you have to do a separate Master's degree in order to continue to a PhD. This would be most logical for me because even if you have done some courses that are similar to what a Master's degree contains, those are most likely not comparable to a Master's degree per say. Im pretty sure that this is the way it goes because it would feel very weird for me that anyone could continue directly to a PhD without having formally completed a Master's.
[update] one thing that came to mind: it might be possible that the Finnish university might accept some of your courses into your Master's degree (if they are equivalent of those that you would do here) however im pretty sure that this will not apply to the majority of courses. Again, you need to check this with the universities directly.

Hello Oliver! I'm an engineer student from Brazil and I was thinking of applying to an English bachelor degree in tourism in an applied sciences university in finland next year. The annual fee is 6000 euros, plus the 560 in expenses. Do you think it is possible to sustain a service job and cover(or at least help) the fees and expenses?
Based on the same formula as i used in the video that i doable. Also good to take into account that the lower your income, the lower your tax burden. I dont have the exact net sum right now for you based on those expenses but i think it could be doable. This would of course depend on how fast you are able to find a job once you arrive in finland.
You mentioned that you are an engineering student in brazil. So does this mean that you are already studying engineering?

Oh that is cool! If you are able to finish your first year in material engineering you could actually try to look for basic engineering jobs or something similar. Im cant guarantee that you'll be hired to these kind of jobs BUT if you were able, they would pay way more than these basic jobs that ive mentioned.

@@RoadtoFinnish I don't know how easy it is to find an engineering job in finland but in Brazil I would require at least 2 to 3 years into the course to be able to find a good stage with a well developed academic curriculum.
I choose my course based on job market opportunities here in my country and my interest in sciences, however I also am pretty compelled by international relations since I participate in exchange programs and host people from around the world(there comes my finnish friendships).
I'm considering finnish universities because of the affordable prices for me and the incentive for international students. Lapland, kajaani and oulu are the ones that im most interest in!

Right so in Finland finding a job in engineering would depend on your specialisation + how good you are at what you do. Its not guaranteed that you could find a job in engineering, but i would not count that out either. It all depends on you.
Your background sounds really interesting and i think that applying for a bachelors in tourism is an interesting choice. However, i would also recommend that you check out the different bachelors programmes in engineering that Finnish universities offer. There arent that many bachelors degrees in engineering that are taught in english, but one school that has these programmes is Aalto university. The tuition fees for Aalto are pretty darn high, but graduation from Aalto university as a masters in engineering would give you excellent career options around the world. If you are interested in looking at degrees in engineering, my suggestion is to apply to Aalto and try to get a scholarship to pay your tuition fees. Hey Faridad and thanks for the question. You could do the math by doing the same calculations as i did in this video but by replacing the 12,000€ with 4,000€ or 8,000€. The problem is that i would need to start calculating the approximated taxes for the needed net salaries and it would take me a long time to do this because 4000 and 8000 are pretty far from each other.
As a general rule of thumb, it does not matter how low the tuition fees are, you should *not* try to rely on a part-time salary to pay for them. It is simply not realistic especially in the first years of your studies (especially taking into account what i said in the video about the immigration service not allowing you to rely on a salary during the first year of your studies). Doing school full-time is hard enough so trying to cram in 25 hours of work at the same time is, in my personal opinion, not possible.
Please take into account that this is why Finnish universities have good scholarship options for non EU and non EAA citizens. If you cant afford paying for tuition, those scholarships are your best bet.

Thanks so much for the question. So i get this all the time and i always give the same answer because i dont know people's backgrounds in terms of their previous education and finances. So please bear with me.
My general answer to this question is that it is not possible for you to sustain your monthly expenses in the beginning of your studies especially if you live in the capital region. This is because its simply too difficult (to most) to find a job that pays well enough (after taxes) to pay for ones' living costs. There are multiple reasons here so i cant go in depth into the topic. However, take the example of restaurant jobs. Most higher end restaurants (that also pay better salaries) require you to have a vocational degree in hospitality or in the catering business and they do not hire people without such degrees. This does naturally not apply to more low-key places like most cafeterias, fast-food and normal lunch places BUT those places also pay a bit less in salary. Again, this is not as black-and-white as i might make it seem but i think its better for me to stay conservative with my answers because anyone can read these and i dont want to give a too much of a optimistic impression of the situation.
Having said all of this, i would also like to note that this situation gets much easier the further you get in your studies. For example, this is not as big of an issue for master's degree students because people doing their master's already have skills that some employers in their fields want to utilise. So the further you get in your studies, the more likely it is that you are able to find a job in the field of your studies - jobs which will inherently pay better.
Again - all of this simplifies the issue quite extensively BUT if you want a good rule of thumb, i would say that you should not expect to find a job that pays well enough at least during your first 1,5 years in Finland. If i break this down it would mean that i would not even recommend anyone to APPLY for jobs during their first year (with the exception of summer jobs) and if you start looking for a part-time job at the end of your first year, it will most likely take 3-5 months until you sign your first employment contract. I hope this makes any sense. I do not recommend looking for a job during your first year simply because there are already enough things that you need to get used to in your new life and studies in Finland and adding the pressure of a job on top of that might not be a good idea (just my opinion).

In order to apply for a residence permit, you need to have sufficient financial funds to finance your stay in Finland. The exact terms on how much money you need can be found from this website: migri.fi/en/means-of-support
The requirement for the bank account in which you need to have those funds is simply that it has to be fully controlled by you. So it cant be an account controlled by e.g. your parents. This is because those funds need to be solely for your living expenses in Finland.

Mmm that is also a great question. I would assume they might ask you for documents relating to your husbands education, both of your residence permit etc.. Im not 100% sure but the documents i have listed below are the ones that Aalto university instruct their students to have when they arrive to Finland. I would guess that physical copies are the best:
*EU-citizens:*
- European Health Insurance Card
- letter of acceptance from Aalto
- proof of financial means to support your studies (for example Certificate of your Erasmus grant)
-f ew passport-sized photographs
- prescriptions if you are on medication
- some euros (cash).
*Non-EU Citizens:*
- proof of health insurance,
- letter of acceptance from Aalto

Unfortunately its impossible for me to answer this question because of a few reasons: 1) the minimum requirements for scholarships are not publicised by the universities so i cant say for sure how they actually assess the applicants, and 2) your IELTS and GPA are not the only things that are being assessed when considering who should the scholarships be granted to. You would need to ask this question from someone who has practical experience in granting scholarships. Unfortunately i do not have that experience 😕

Oh i think this sounds a bit odd. I dont have any personal experience here because you do not get to publish anything, especially peer-reviewed, as a master's student. So you would need to be a phd student to even think about this. Having said this, i dont see any reason why it would be easier to publich research as a STEM researcher. There is plenty of economics research that is published all the time both from researchers and phd students.

Hey man and thanks for the question! First of all, please call me Oliver. We Finns like to keep things quite informal and we do not address each other by our last names or by titles. So no need to call me sir 👍.
To your question, its very hard for me to say about part-time job opportunities in Kuopio because i have no personal experience + i would need to know a lot about your personal background and prior work experience. However, what i can say is that you should not rely financially on getting a part-time job during your studies. As i showed in this video, you would need to get a highly paid job in order to pay for your living costs with your salary. Taking into account that you are (presumably) a high school graduate (assuming so because you are applying for a bachelor's degree), it is not realistic to assume that you would find a job in your field before you have progressed significantly with your degree. It is quite normal that people find their first jobs in their field only after their first or second year of studies. This applies to every city in Finland so its not about Kuopio per say.
So if you are looking for a part-time job to do alongside your studies, you should be looking at basic, lower level customer service jobs. They do not pay that well in the beginning but its better than nothing.

I answered your question about the value of this kind of a degree in your other comment. About scholarships: every english taught bachelors and masters degree programme in finland does offer scholarships for their best applicants (so not for everyone). The scholarships, how many there are, how large the scholarships are, when and how to apply for them depend on the school and the degree you are applying for. So please refer to the webpage of the specific school that you are applying to for more detailed information.

Yeah, unfortunately those kind of degrees arent that common in Finland. I do know that we have excellent sports science degrees at a master's level (at the university of eastern Finland if im not mistaken) but i dont remember too many english taught bachelors level degrees. However, i would encourage you to check out the bachelor's degree programme in physiotherapy at the SAMT university of applied sciences. This programme is in english and its not that expensive considering the scholarship options.
While the annual tuition fee is relatively high (almost 10,000€), they have a 50% scholarship for the best 20% of students every year. So if you are committed to study hard, this would be a great option!

Hey Jahin and thanks for another great question. Unfortunately i cant say anything about this because i have no information on the minimum requirements for the different scholarships. In addition, this information is not public and universities are not required to share it to the public. Also as a note, if you find anyone saying on the web (e.g. on Reddit) that the minimum SAT score for a scholarship is X or Y, they dont know what they are talking about. This is because the minimum scores vary from year to year. So yes, you might get a benchmark from people who applied previously, but i would not trust those numbers to be true this year. So its impossible to say for sure.
However, having said that, you seem to have an excellent background and it seems that you have a good starting point. Again, referring to your earlier question, i would simply apply and see how it goes. This will give you a good idea of what to expect.

I would also recommend that if you have any questions about the application process or the scores, you could always try to contact aalto university admission services at aalto@admissions.fi . Again, they will not be able to share you any more numbers that they already have on their website but at least they will be able to give you definite answers to many questions regarding the application process itself.
