hey man i did this to my 79 z28 and it did the job no more leak! the place called auto matic kings here in cali thanks for sharing.. now i gota fix the other leak on the passenger side 😑
Thanks for the video. I needed to see exactly that. I disconnected cable cause odometer was clicking every 5 seconds. Wanted to make shure its not going to allow anything to come out with no cable pushing in it. Appreciate you
The press fit seal that the shaft of the gear rides on almost always comes out of the box not fully seated into the new bullet. Use a socket, tap it the rest of the way in and it prevents the wear on the shaft of the plastic gear and you won’t have that problem next time even if it’s fixed for now.
Yup! Just went thru this job yesterday only to find it dribbling fluid again. Replaced the bullet but realized the gear may be to blame but didn't have a new one on hand. I believe gear and bullet should be replaced as a set.
I have yet to fix mine again. It's still leaking even with all new parts. I was told that sometimes the seal inside the bullet isn't seated all the way. I have to take it back out and see it I can tap it down with a socket or something so it will hopefully stop...
I don't have a video of that. However the cable just unscrews from the transmission. If you get some channel locks or vice grips and turn the end of the cable counter clockwise it should come off. The other end is connected to the back of the instrument cluster. You'll have to look up under your dash. There is a wire looking clip that needs to be pulled down on and the cable should just slide out. Your cable could be broken on the inside, or maybe it's just not seated right into the trans or instrument cluster. There is a possibility something else is broken, but I would eliminate the cable as the culprit first.
got the same housing and it leak, seen an you tube vid bout this problem and you will have to tap the front little seal in just a little bit cuz its too far out.
Why didn't you show whether or not the new plastic gear fixed the leak or not? We want to see you film the results after you put it back in the transmission.
Well...maybe. I had one bullet come out leaving the gear stuck in the housing. If that happens to you, the right tools to get it out are a 130 degree hook pick and a mirror. @@meridian208
Where can I find the bullet and plastic gear at? I live in S.W. Florida (Sarasota) and I can't find one anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Haven't been able to drive my 1981 Firebird in a long time. 400/400 turbo
I have a transmission supply store where I live. You might try rock auto online. Or even maybe amazon? You could try hitting up a transmission repair shop too, if there is one in your area.
So in the end was the new bullet necessary or just the gear assembly? I suppose the new bullet would give you the new inner seal but the outer o-ring should be common. OR it's so damn cheap .... just replace it all right?
Hard to say if the bullet needed replaced for sure, I mean it does have the seal in it too that could be worn. But like you said it's all so cheap might as well just replace all of it.
Unfortunately no. The gear inside the bullet, the bullet, and the cable are all brand new now. The trans shop told me that it probably is the seal inside the bullet that is not fully seated down all the way. I've yet to tear it back apart and try to tap it down in there more and see if it fixes it. I will post an update when I do.

Mine was clicking and I changed the speedo. That fixed it.

Nice video. So, what are the parts called, so I can get them? Thanks!
this could be my problem. thanks man.
Wow great help Buddy thanks for sharing 👍👍👍
Thanks this helped me out a lot!
Thanks for posting this!
The Bigger gear that the bullet gear rides on ALSO has the same type of seal. Take the tail housing off and you'll find that one....
Is there supposed to be an oring where the screw on part is?
Not where the cable screws on, but the bullet part going into the trans does.
¿ Cómo lo puedo pedir en la tienda o refacciónaria ese engrane que cambiaste ?
Thanks for the video, its a lot of help :)
Do you have the part number to the “bullet”?
Awesome job
I can't find your video where you replace o rings on the bullet speedometer cable leak I having same problem on my 72 blazer
I actually just ended up getting a whole new bullet.
@@meridian208 thx that's what I'm going to do
thanks, usefull video
i unscrewed my speedometer gear in the transmission and greasy liquid was coming out. what was that? and what shoul i do? thanks a lot!
Where can I find the plastic peace
I got mine from a place where I live called Idaho Transmission Warehouse
What is it called
Thanks
Thanks. It looked like you replaced a yellow driven gear with a white one?
I think the old one was just discolored or something. The new one seemed exactly the same except the end wasn't worn off.
@@meridian208 Just count the teeth. It's not rocket science.
Thanks!!!!
Hi, should I drain the transmission before doing it, if not how much oil will go out by removing the bullet? Thanks
I don't recall how much comes out. But be prepared with a drain pan just in case.
@@meridian208 👌 ok , gonna do that in case. Thanks
Many Thanks

alexisesmy turns out just the gear inside of this was worn on the end. I replaced it and it no longer leaks.
Hi there when u buy the bullet does it come with new gear
Not that I've seen, they come seperate as far as I know
Why didn't you show whether or not the new plastic gear fixed the leak or not? We want to see you film the results after you put it back in the transmission.
I think I talk about that more in a couple of my other videos.
Where did you get that speed sensor or ordering it?
I got this stuff from a place called idaho transmission warehouse. If you look them up maybe they can ship you what you need.
Where did you get a new o ring at for the Speedo cable bullet

Manny's transmission on Bee Ridge.
Always lube the new speedo gear stem to avoid damaging the o-ring. Also, you can double-up o-rings, too. BTW, your slip yolk is extended way too far.
Whats a good lube for it, I gotta replace mine

Could the speed bullet gear cause the speedometer not to work?
yeah if it was worn out or broken it could.

I've been going to Idaho Transmission Warehouse. Its kind of off Century over on Cole by the Costco. It should come up on google maps.
