For those who don't know, the Evangelion OST is a major cultural artifact that a lot of people recognize, kind of like mario tune or star wars theme is for us in the West. So although we westerners find it humorous when a military band plays weeb shit, they probably react the same way to some of the stuff we choose to play.

There is something beautiful about a piece of "Popular Art" becoming recognized as a cultural artifact. Evangelion ist very much a work worthy of that level of respect and affection, maybe even especially so for being such a prime example of what sort of storytelling anime as a medium can be used for.
Or, in short, this is so fucking cool. Couldn't have happened to a better series.

They weren't really the villains. Seele told them that Nerv was going to cause 3rd impact, and the only way to prevent it was to destroy the organization and everyone there. While they were a bit brutal (flamethrower ing people and killing those who surrendered) the 2nd impact destroyed nations and killed half of the worlds population. I don't blame them for trying to prevent another.
I see they're trying to give the opposing army clinical depression and make it clear how unworthy they are of the fleeting love that still exists in this world. Nice

@@4lderion It was a reference to neon genesis Evangelion (english dub), where "I mustn't run away" is the protagonists mantra. "Congratulations" was also a reference to the show.
Incidentally the anime shows how useless the JSDF is against the real threats facing Japan: Kaijū attacks.
