Yeah, polite is good but you have to be careful not to kiss ass like a fan boy (I thought that kinda happend here and there) and he could have gone way way deeper with the questions. It was still pretty surface level curiosity . Mr Nolan can handle difficult questions, really.

Love Nolan's first answer, regarding ambiguity and knowing his own story even if he doesn't spoon feed it to an audience. That's the way ambiguity ought to be. The admission of many directors who don't know what their film is actually saying, and there are definitely exceptions, can appear so empty and fleeting. Artists need a point of view, whether or not they let the consumer in on the specifics of what that might entail.

    • @georgeorwell1267
      @georgeorwell1267 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I think this is why I'm always skeptical of those who hold ambiguity up as some sort of golden, enhancing feature that all films/stories need to possess. I think ambiguity works best when it feels very organic and natural to the story (e.g., the ending of 'City Lights', or John Carpenter's 'The Thing', to name a few), rather than out of some smug, 'hey, look at me!', reactionary sense on the storyteller's part to be different/unique or not follow 'tradition', especially at the expense of things previously established with regards to story, characters, world building, etc. At that point, you risk breaking the audience's immersion in your story.

In Tenet, Sator quotes the final lines of The Hollow Men by T.S Eliot, "This is the way the world ends, not with a bang but a whimper".
Upon returning home after watching the film, I took out a copy of Eliot's selected works to reread the aforementioned and upon reading several other of Eliot's poems noticed several other thematic, or at least symbolic references to his works in the movie.
    from 'Marina'
"What is this face, less clear and clearer
The pulse in the arm, less strong and stronger -
Given or lent? More distant than stars and nearer than the eye.
    ...
This form, this face, this life
Living to live in a world of time beyond me; let me
Resign my life for this life, my speech for that unspoken,
The awakened, lips parted, the hope, the new ships."
There are others to be found aplenty, both here and there, and I would recommend that you, dear reader, find and read them, aloud, for yourself but, if you'll permit me, perhaps the most prescient example...
    from CHORUSES FROM 'THE ROCK'
    (VII 18-20)
"Then came, at a predetermined moment, a moment in time and of time,
A moment not out of time, but in time, in what we call history: transacting, bisecting the world of time, a moment in time but not like a moment of time,
A moment in time but time was made through that moment: for without the meaning there is no time, and that moment of time gave the meaning."

I’ve been thinking about how to approach this review on Tenet without giving the impression of bashing the movie or hating on it. Cause I did like this movie but I certainly have a lot to say. Let’s start with this, I was like everyone else with Tenet. I was super excited, who wouldn’t be! Christopher Nolan directing, big budget summer blockbuster, with a complex plot, awesome trailer and a great cast! I’ve been waiting for this movie for a long time and as soon as I found a showtime for my city I decided I had to go. So I saw Tenet and I have to say, this is a Christopher Nolan movie. It has his style of direction all over it. The complex and dense plot, big action spectacles and a long runtime. Will people like it, most likely unfortunate for me not so much. What really bothered me about this movie was the plot and how Nolan told this story. It didn’t feel cohesive or even understandable really but rather very confusing, rushed and the outcome of it all made me question what was the purpose of all that just happened. But a lot of this movie felt like it was trying to be an extravaganza of action scenes, set pieces and dazzling spectacles. Luckily It does accomplish that though, a lot of the times. The action is really well done and does a lot of the spectacles. I just wish that the movie presented a more compelling story, because it felt as though it was kinda trying too. The story, plotting and even sometimes the screenplay felt so jumbled throughout the entire runtime. It tries to be so intellectual and complex but at the end it didn’t succeed at it. Overall Tenet wasn’t as great as I hoped for but, big and sometimes fun action scenes, good acting, sound design, and the look of the movie are all positives for Tenet. I did have some fun with Tenet but wish it was more straightforward with its story and think most people will enjoy it.

I read a lot of these reviews, so I was afraid when watching the movie. I think there’s no disagreement that this is his most complex movie. But, I actually loved it. The plot is probably ahead of its time. When people start analyzing this movie, they’re going to be mind blown. Nolan planted so many things. It’s one of those movies you have to watch many times to fully grasp.

I'm a huge fan of time-travel stories, especially the ones involving time paradox concepts. One that come to mind is a smart time-travel novella I've read around March titled Project Dechentreiter (2015) by Elder Prince. I couldn't understand the story from one-time reading, my mind was in torment even though there were so many clues and puzzle pieces hidden in plain sight. Everything made so much sense after a second read (luckily the story only counts 80 pages), and what a fantastic e-book that I highly recommend. There was also a movie called Time Lapse (2014), that one included brilliant ideas but wasn't executed with elegance, but is a good watch anyway.
I can't wait for Christopher Nolan's next movie!
