    Hey Bethany, this is an amazing video, thanks so much for all the helpful tips. I have a few questions: for a paperback 8.5 by 8.5 does the cover image need to be a double spread? From your video it seems that needs to be double and the individual pages need to be single - is that correct or because you did a hardcover? Also do you have an updated coupon code by any chance?

    Hi Bethany, thank you for your informative and super helpful videos! They are a life saver. I have a question: when doing a full colour spread (same image across two pages) does there have to be a blank/white gap in the middle (interior margin) for the gutter in InDesign, for it to show up correctly on the printed book? Or is it ok to just have a full colour spread on the final PDF we upload? I just read something on the Ingram Sparks file user guide that says there has to be a gap/blank space for the gutter, but maybe I am mistaken? Thank you :)

    • @BethanyStahl
      @BethanyStahl  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There does not need to be a gap in the middle for it to show up correctly on the printed book. It is okay to have a full color spread exported into pages on the final PDF. (Even if it is recommended, I can personally attest that you do not need it).

I noticed when setting up the Page Count and Market that you went the the United States. I have been trying to understand this but your is the only video I have found that even shows this step. Is there a reason not to choose Global Distribution? Do these options need to be set up separately, or... Anyway I would love to get your thoughts on the choice. Happy holidays!

      Glad it was helpful! I'm not sure which part you are referring to. When at this step: 6:28-9:11 Print Information (Page Type, Color, Cover) you can set prices for each market (and there is a global distribution option at the bottom as well) that way your book is available everywhere. I hope that helps! I hope you had a good holiday and wishing you all the best!

    Thank you! Excited to follow this guide. One question. Is it possible to change the book cover? For example, I plan to print 100 copies with a specific cover (1st release), and then change the cover to print another set, for a 2nd release?

    • @BethanyStahl
      @BethanyStahl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! They do charge a file update fee (which you may be able to find a promo code for) but you are able to update your book once it is uploaded/published always. Just be aware if you are doing multiple versions, traditionally you may use another ISBN to denote a version change, however with self-publishing the rules are a little more gray. Just something to consider/research - but I do updates for my books all the time (spelling errors, adding new/updated front and back matter/tweaking and updating covers) without updating ISBNs since the story isn't having major changes so long story short, yes you can! Congrats on your upcoming book!

    • @BethanyStahl

      You just need to make sure the on sale date isn't until when you want it to ship - but be careful when setting this up since it isn't the finished book. I'd recommend waiting for finished files, but I totally understand the rush. Take it slow and make sure the on sale date is in the future, and you should be okay. When in doubt you can always reach out to IngramSpark for clarification. Good luck and congrats on your upcoming book!

    Hi Bethany! I just published my first book and your videos have been a huge help! I'm curious if you price your KDP and IS paperbacks the same? Or is the IS priced slightly higher to avoid competing with the Amazon orders? Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

    • @BethanyStahl
      @BethanyStahl  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congrats! They are both priced the same for retail value (and they have to be since they are the same version if you are using the same ISBN on each). But you can change the wholesale discount on IngramSpark to whatever you'd like to avoid competition with Amazon orders and gain a similar profit. I typically recommend between 55%-45% but it is always best to see what works best for your journey. Wishing you the best of luck with your book!

    • @KellyLBourne
      @KellyLBourne 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BethanyStahl Great, thank you! I didn't realize that about the pricing, so I'll make sure they match for all markets. My IS royalty will be slightly lower than Amazon, but I'm ok with that. Your video was helpful for showing how to download the cover template, however, Ingram seems to be set up to only upload a Word docx for the interior. I only have an Indesign file for my book meaning my interior is in PDF's. You mentioned something about setting up your own template for the interior, are you able to share how you did this?

      Hello! You should not buy your own. I highly recommend using their barcode from the cover creator, there is no need to spend money when they are providing it for free, in my opinion. Also, you can put the price in the barcode with IngramSpark, there will be a little drop-down box next to "Price in Bar Code" under "Optional Information" (at the very bottom) where you can put your price, currency, and choose "Yes". You are correct, that bookstores do prefer to have it in the barcode. If you don't see the option on IngramSparks cover creator, you may need to reach out to customer support.

      No. You can only use the same ISBN if you own it (not a free one) and it is being used for the same format. So one ISBN will be used for each version: paperback, ebook, hardcover, etc. But, for example, you can use the same paperback ISBN for your paperback book distributed through different sources as long as the versions are identical. Hi Bethany. Sorry for the dumb question, but what, exactly, does the discount refer to? Who gets that 55% discount and under what circumstances? I kind of assume that it's retailers who would buy your book at that discounted rate to allow them to then sell at cover price and make a profit, but I'm just guessing. Thank you.

    • @BethanyStahl
      @BethanyStahl  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, booksellers. It is complicated but essentially each part of distributing your book gets a cut of that 55% so booksellers may only see it at 5% when it is set to 55%. Ingram isn't clear when it comes to who and what stage gets it, but what you do know is you will always get the royalty estimate for the full discount no matter what the end buyer sees.

I would take the error messages you have and reach out to IngramSpark if they are not clear of why it is getting denied, before you try to format it again in any other program. During Ingramspark's review, they sent me an email that stated I saved my interior files to an incorrect size. When I printed each file to a pdf the paper size is 8.5 x 11 in landscape mode, but the photo size wasn't set to the right size ( I think I should have selected the 8 x 10 photo size...the size my illustrator saved them). I'm confused on how I account for the bleed factor of .125 on 3 sides, (that would be 8.125 x 10.25)? Should my illustrator have saved the orginal.jpg files as 8.125 x 10.25 to account for the bleeding, so when it's printed to a pdf it's size is also correct at 8.125 x 10.25 taking into account for the bleed? QUERY.
    Printing is $9. I sell at $20. I offer 50% discount. A store or online seller buys 10 for $100. I receive compensation of $1 per book, a total of $10 in my pocket. 5 of those books are then returned under "YES - DESTROY". I assume the buyer ill need to prove the books have been destroyed as opposed to selling them under the counter. I also assume that once destroyed they get back their costs, therefore 5 books destroyed sees $50 returned into their pocket, I then lose the purchase price of those books, hence I am now in debt for $50 - ah, no, $45.00 because I did receive $1 per book in compo. So basically I would need to sell 9 of the 10 books, and when 1 is returned [destroyed] I lose all that I made. If this is in fact how it works then how is it worth the trouble? Am I wrong here?

    • @BethanyStahl
      @BethanyStahl  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Returns can get dangerous and there are other authors that share about debts from returns in blogs and on TH-cam as well, which are helpful to research and to hear their experience. If it is a worry, you can choose that they are non-returnable so the risk isn't there. I personally have less than 0.5% of books returned, so it is worth it for me to allow returns as it opens it up to a wider audience. But yes, your understanding of it is correct. Returns are a gamble, and if it doesn't fit your business plan, then I absolutely recommend making the best choice for your journey, which may be not allowing them. There isn't a one-size-fits-all publishing plan, so any path you decide to take is valid. Wishing you the best of luck!

      @@tamara-tamara6404 At 16:07 in the video, you can click "Download proof" to see a digital proof of your files to ensure they are okay, or you can click on "Orders" on the left and order a proof of your book to see a physical copy before you approve it for distribution. If you were to make changes, in the bubbles below the proof you can select that you have "revised content to upload" and make any changes by reuploading. There are additional fees if you approve it then reupload new content, versus uploading new content before approval. I hope that helps! Good luck!

    You have to pay for them to distribute it? How much?

      There are file upload and revision fees as well as printing fees. I'd recommend checking their site for current rates and for an accurate list of charges.

    Why not just publish through Amazon 100%?

      You can - it just depends on what you'd prefer. Currently IngramSpark is the only POD company that offers Hardcovers, which leads people to use to hand in hand with KDP. This video compares the two options: th-cam.com/video/J33gpsF2iHc/w-d-xo.html
