It's sad how a period of peace regressed Japanese society back then into a way more racist and patriarchal system, instead of them celebrating their new found peace by progressing further. He underestimated her, I suppose. When his honor was hurt by one who fights in an unorthodox way, disarming him and putting him at almost an inch of his life, he felt as though the situation wasn't under his control. Understandable character, but that view of honor is wrong for the right reasons.
I LOVE the way Mizu's backstory was handled in this episode, contrasting it with both the play and the present fight, contrasting her past attempts at vulnerability with her present hardness, showing how she's both the Ronin *and* the bride and... *chef's kiss* 👌 edit: I don't think Mikio was embarrassed that he got beat by his wife. He was *scared* because he found out that the partner he married could easily kill him. So, yes, the usual power dynamic was flipped... in a way...
I believe it was embarrassment as well. Sexism is a massive theme in the show, and Mikio does go out of his way to be gentle but isnt immune to the patriarchy he lives in. We see this when he kills her mother and left Mizi to die before-hand. His gentleness was a result of being in full control of the situation, like something he exemplified to feel good about himself, but when he loses to Mizu and realises he doesnt have full control, it damaged his ego and his gentleness thaws.
i think the way mikio acted was out of nowhere, and then killing the mother, and mizu not even reacting to that... that sequence felt more like a dream than a flashback, im was so confused if it was real or not
@@BR1elBR imo the entire sequence did not paint her in a good light. Who uses live steel in a spar? Like the entire thing is that she cannot get rid of that one bit of bloodlust in her, and that lead to her dream life falling apart.
I thnk yall missed it. On the bridge when Mizu was hurt, she reached out to the woman carrying the baskets with her child and they passed her on by. The same woman and child that couldn't get in the gate without a man (her husband). The same woman and child froze to death. Karma came full circle.
I don't think karma came full circle. They were both still breathing. You can see their breath when Mizu drops the golden broach. So, she helped them, even if they didn't help her, and we don't know their fate.
Mizu gave the woman and child Taigen's gold comb. She dropped it beside them but they didn't see her do it. That may be why they didn't help Mizu when she was seeking help on that bridge.
🙌🏾 This was one of the best episodes I have ever seen. It was told in 3 perspectives, The Past (Mizu and her husband, The Present (fighting the claw clang) and The Future (Akemi's bridal puppet play). All done so well, all perspectives were interwoven and intertwined perfectly. Also, her sword extentions was an epic sequence, the sound design and choreography was 💯
Even the puppet play was damn entertaining, with all the little flourishes and nuances, like when the bride puppet quivering as she pleased with the ronin that she was loyal. I was almost as interested in the ronin and the bride in the play as in the actual characters in this episode. Episode 5 was perhaps the strongest episode in the show with episode 6 being a strong contender.
Best episode of the season imo 😭🙌 when Mizu started taking her weights off and building the Naginata with her sword I LOST MY SH*t and was legit SCREAMING at my television LETS GOOO 🤣💀 it was seriously so epic and the choreo was legendary. The moment in episode one with the weight reveal was amazing and super cool but I was saying to my sister like an episode or two before this one how it seemed kinda extra for no reason, but to reveal it actually DID have a legit purpose and wasn’t just her making things harder for nothing was such good writing. I never thought they would come back into play the way they did here. Mizus THAT CHICK 👏
This episode was so heartbreaking… it truly shows what led to the resolve of mizu in her quest for revenge. Whatever the truth of that situation was she was left betrayed when she finally let her guard down & allowed herself to feel less than a ‘monster’ . Her quest is not the only reason she does not allow friendship & care to throw her off course.

Spoiler!!! For anyone who has yet to complete the Series. This was one of my fav episode 😭❤️ and when watching it i didnt know if it was really Mizo’s husband or “mother” who betrayed her… but in the final episode notice how Fowler said her mother sold her for drug money… how could he possible have known this detail unless it really was her mother who sold her location?! Its not like she ever told this story to anyone… so i think her husband spoke the truth about being afraid which just makes it all even more tragic 😭
In our folktales and myths, we have different categories of spirits, demons, ghouls. Onryos are essentially vengeful spirits and they can actually hurt living people.
Remember when Mikio said "I'm not a brute" earlier. Perhaps what offended him during the sword fight was that she would not stop when he asked and used her position of power to make a move on him. It's the same if a man would overpower a girl to have sex with them.
I think it was this, her ferocity and insistence on using unsheathed weapons (dangerous), mocking him and generally emasculating him. It’s a very complicated situation and i’m still of the mind that it was the mom who did it
In my opinion it was a dream and it is wildly misinterpreted. For me the idea was that she had this “journey” where she could see what life could be. Unfortunately, she believes so much that this is the only way to be perceived that even in her wildest dreams where she lives a normal life, she still sees betrayal and inevitable death. Mizu believes this is her only journey and the only way that people can perceive her and this is the harshest destiny - not where the others take everything away from you, but where you deny yourself

It’s definitely dream-like, but absolutely happened. That’s the reason she’s so hard-focused on revenge without any regard for her happiness or the people around her. For Mizu, she’s been there, tried that. That other peaceful life wasn’t for her, and having lost everything, the only thing she has left is her vengeance quest. It solidifies her motivation and perspective and gives the audience context to why she does the things she does

I really hope that in season two it gets revealed who actually turned her in. It’s killing me that I don’t know! To Mizu I’m sure it doesn’t even matter because they were both trash, but I want to know.
Not a delusion. It happened directly after leaving Sword Father. That's why she's not great at it yet. She's only been practicing up to that point. She wasn't the demon yet. They say it at the end of the episode. Hate wasn't enough to make her who she is. She needed that corruption of love (both romantic and familial) to become who she is.
Mizu is demonically possessed, that’s why she has a lust for blood. Demons can give people supernatural physical strength. She definitely needs Jesus since he’s the one the demons truly fear. Jesus can help even the most violent and broken person find peace, since he is the prince of peace.

And the tragedy is that he was right. She ended his life, justified as it may (?) have been.

I love this episode! It has that Mask of the Phantasm feel. Where we see how Mizu almost didn’t become that demon.
