Personally for me I get more wavy hallucinations. I see walls moving in and out like a heart beat but the woman behind the desks face morphing is pretty accurate to my trips.
This is my favorite Johnny Depp role and my favorite Benicio Del Toro role. They both really *became* the characters they were portraying and it's an absolutely incredible film because of that.
Depp had the Thompson speech for a few movies afterwards, just like Bill Murray warned him would happen. He adds Keith Richards to his Jack Sparrow, but there was still a lot of Thompson in that character, same with Ninth Gate and a few others at that time.
I totally agree. Depp became good friends with Thompson and he nailed the character. I can (sort of...) understand why people don't like this movie. It's not mainstream and the story is non existent really.. but as cinema and art, it scores full marks in every category.. acting, camera work, music, scenery, emotional and poignant - my favourite non-comedy line in the film is about seeing the high water mark with the right kind of eyes. It's perfect.. meaning you had to have been there to understand the feeling of that moment in history. And it's true of any youth movements in history. The hippies really thought they could spread peace and love through drugs and had a feeling they could save the world. Who knows.. maybe they could have, but the government soon shit all over them and drug casualties along the way from people that didn't respect the power of LSD or addictive/dangerous chemicals. I always felt, too, that th storyllne is paced like a drug experience too.. kicks off hard then has a comedown moment at the end of the film. Things start to make a bit more sense towards the end as more information.ation is revealed, but overall, it's still distorted trippy nonsensical reality.. I know a lot of different drugs are consumed, but they never mention ketamine. If they had it in that time too then this movie is a perfect analogy.! You could rename the film "K Hole" This film introduced me to the word 'Mescaline'. And I'm so happy. Best, most beautiful and profound trip of my life with my best friend at the time.. beautiful treasured memories. This film did make me go a bit drug mad for a while, but it was a fun time in my life, something to look back on. And this film is a slice of history, both for me and for the history within the film.
My suggestion is putting yourself in the shoes of a former hippy that's bitter with the state of the modern world, and accept the many absurdities that make it up
Duke wearing the lizard tail, which is a costume piece from the earlier scene is one of my favorite examples of breaking the fourth wall, because it's so subtle and doesn't feel like the movie is winking at the audience. It adds to the surreal quality and makes you question your interpretation of what's happening in the film.
It's strange how old this film is and having the almost perfect concept of what acid is like to the inexperienced person. Also, Johnny Depp was perfect for this role. The research and prep he did for his role as Thompson deserves an oscar on it's own. Great film. Fun fact: the first time I saw this movie was the first time I ate mushrooms.

After I saw the movie I found an uncle sid dealer in the burbs outside detroit and I got some sugar cubes with 3 hits of acid dropped in each. Back then it only cost me 8 bucks a pop (2006) but I got 4 of them and had a 4th of July I'll never forget lmao. (Only took one and gave another to my gf n saved the other 2) Honestly it was way too much. I wasn't aware how strong a hit like that was, let alone 3 hits all in one cube as a 14 year old. I didn't freak out because I knew everything I was experiencing was gonna go away at some point but it was intense. It helped though in my future endeavors with cid because I kept it casual and nothing could compare to my first time really tripping at a maximum (I know some ppl will give me shit n call me a bitch saying they ate whole sheets but fyi I was just a kid so keep that in mind edge-lords) Ever since then I've never been able to find cid as clean as that.. They are down for it once I tell them Johnny Depp stars in it. So we watch the movie, and 3/4 way through, one of the girls turns to me with a pissed off expression on her face: "Seriously wtf, where is Johnny Depp? You said Johnny Depp would be in it!" That man is one hell of an actor, and it's a great movie!

I spent a summer in Bosnia playing Army; we had no internet and only had two VHS movies to watch: 1. Major Payne 2. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas I still love them both but Fear and Loathing is the winner for me... What a great movie!

I watched it in two parts, both times on edibles. Had to cut my first session short at the 40 minute mark it was getting way too heavy. I just finished it last night and now watching this video is like listening to the tape recording, slowly remembering what the hell happened.

As someone whose experimented heavily with psychedelics; I can say without a shadow of a doubt that, sans the immersive reptile transformations, the scene in the bar is on point and even triggers something akin to flashbacks to those who have had prior experiences with the drug. The sound distortion, movements of patterns and outlines, the unexplained light and color changes accompanied by extra glare and of course the very present fear and paranoia. An absolutely stunning and informed trip scene that will never be never be topped.
It's amazing how Gilliam has actually never taken acid - because it's easily the most accurate cinematic depiction of what dealing with that terrible drug is like AHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeEEEEE!!!!!
The conversation between duke gonzo and the DA guy was referenced when duke is tripping on acid, some guy is talking about druggies cutting off someone’s head and stealing their pineal gland
I'm already halfway through the book and so far it's pretty much from page to screen beside the tiny differences that are in this video it's pretty much word for word.
Also... One of my favourite parts of this movie is that it can be interpreted in multiple ways and different people can have vastly different - but justified - emotional responses to it... much like a song. When I first saw it, most of my friends connected with the drug aspect, but I felt a deeper connection to the way Hunter S. Tompson could describe how deeply he missed the passion he shared with everyone around him during his favourite moment in time. He was in the middle of recognizing that an era that would forever define him was slipping away and his love of it would never be enough to save it. Think that's a pretty universal thing that we all go through. Though we may not be able to articulate it as well as Raoul Duke.
Also I feel Depps portrayal in fear and loathing captured Thompson's idiosyncrasies perfectly but Murray's portrayal in where the buffalo roam captures his personality far better.
The neon snake would have been amazing to see personally but maybe I'm only imagining how good it would be instead of knowing it. Or maybe I'm just high. Probably the 2nd one.
They also went to Vegas to kill a "scag baron" (heroin dealer) named Savage Henry who ripped them off. That's why Duke woke up to Gonzo's bloody knife and that's probably the only reason Gonzo came with in the first place. The Mint 400 race was just a side activity and just another reason to justify actually going there. The real objective was probably just to kill Savage Henry and then binge on drugs. I personally think Hunter S. Thompson and Oscar Zeta Acosta really went to Vegas to kill a heroin dealer and everything else written or focused on in the book was simply a cover. Thompson and his Attorney basically got away with murder by playing off the story as being "partially fictitious".
I believe that was just a farce that they said to screw with hitchhiker’s when they were high as hell looking to have a laugh. He wrote the book and also a article for Rolling Stone Magazine about Oscar Zeta Acosta named The Brown Buffalo.
The pulsing changing and growing up the faces was definitely one of the most accurate depictions in a movie, things turning entirely into other things or unicorns popping up like most movies is never realistic haha, maybe with dmt and other intense ones but Gilliam pulled that off great, similar to his python animations
This is still one of the most iconic and unadulterated art films ive watched, definitely in my top ten films. Noting the various changes from the book to make it more streamlined has given me more reason to love it.
Rarely for me, I read the book first. And loved it, but wondered how it would work on film. Sure enough, Terry Gilliam uploaded everything I saw in my mind onto the screen. An absolute masterpiece. :-)
I'll also add these few: - In the beginning of the book he spends a lot more time describing the initial gathering of the car, tape recorder, and there's a whole scene where he haggles with some financial person for cash for the trip. - In the book, when he flee's the first hotel (the telegram part mentioned here) he willingly takes Dr Gonzo to the airport and spends the rest his money there on useless trinkets in the gift shop. In the movie he just says the Dr abandoned him. - Dr. Gonzo negotiates a deal with the maids at one point for 1000 bars of transparent soap (soap appears in the movie but no explanation) - In the book he says the cop who pulled him over was a young eager looking fellow who was obviously new to the force. (def not G.B. haha. And the cop doesn't ask for a kiss/say he's "lonely" in the book) - there's also an interesting section in the book where he describes a time in his life when in a pre-psychedelics phase he tried to seek advice on LSD from a known spiritual hippie leader and was unsuccessful. This part could have been cool in the movie.
SO GLAD you mentioned the cop asking for a kiss!! It irks me that they left that in, and then abruptly cut to "I felt raped, the pig had done me on all fronts".. *Totally* confuses the context of the scene!
Fun fact adrenachrome is a really drug but it’s produced in a lab not by harvesting the adrenal gland, it’s also not really used to get high usually it’s used as a way to try to stop bleeding, one COULD take adrenachrome recreationally but straight epinephrine would have a stronger effect while also being a bit cheaper. Personally I think hunter got some random drug from a dude who told him it was adrenachrome along with some spooky story so that he could charge more for it and hunter completely bought it
When I worked at a factory I listened to the audiobook of this and it had some incredible voice actors that made it see like I was just listening to an uncut version of the movie. Really entertaining 10/10 would recommend the book/audiobook.
Listen to the commentary of the film. You'll get more than 9 things you didn't know. I haven't watched the commentary version for sometime. But I remember realizing when I did, that every odd facts/trivia article about this movie got most of their information from the commentary.
I watched it the first time i did shrooms, it took a friend and i about 5 hours to finish it, we had to keep pausing it to take breaks, go outside and talk to the trees.
It's definitely a fun experience. Just puts you in the mindset of the protagonist. I had to wait an hour or two because when I first tried I couldn't understand a word he was saying. I asked what was that buzzing sound. My buddy told me it was his voice and I laughed for like what seemed an eternity but was most likely 45 seconds.
Often I put it on at the slowest slow-mo speed, like 1/16 or something. Then it lasts the entire trip. Put it on a small tv with a long cord so you can move it around, put the screen facing the ceiling, etc.
I saw it on acid and when gonzo was talking about killing the dude out in the desert his red eyes scared the shit out of me. Got kinda uncomfortable and put on planet earth. Other than that, sober, absolutely love the movie
Being a 2000 baby, I just feel that this film sets the atmosphere of the Vietnam war and drug era in a way that makes me want to experience it so bad and watching this film over and over again sort of allows you to experience it. Thank you Thompson and Gilliam
Long time listener, first time caller. Huge fan of your channel. Bigger fan of both the movie and book: Fear & Loathing. I've seen it at least 2 dozen times and immediately mention it anytime anyone ever asks what my favourite film is. This video filled me with the same kind of pessimistic hope and nostalgia that I feel about F&LiLV. Glad to see that I'm not the only one affected by it. Also... you reminded me that for some reason I haven't rewatched it in at least a dozen years.
I am 24 and have seen this Film more than 10 Times. And every Time I just loved it. The Cinematographie of this movie is just superb. And it shows the most accurate effects of certain drugs that I am familiar with.
First time I saw this I was so happy I never tried any of these drugs. Freaky ass movie made me feel like I was on the crap myself. I can't imagine watching this while on any drug. I would probably have a panic attack or some kind of freak out. I had to watch it like 3 times before I understand what the hell was going on and even then I had to have someone explain parts to me. It's a crazy trip of a movie I watch once in a while.

No mention of Ralph Steadman's penmanship of the inspirational illustrations in the book? I saw this done as a play maybe forty years ago in pub-theatre in London. They had the Red Shark and the White Whale on stage in the form of fold-out painted wooden panels.
Extract of the human pineal gland would give DMT, that of the adrenal gland would give Epinephrine. But in the movie it's called Adrenochrome, which is not a psychoactive substance. Considering Epinephrine/Adrenaline only gives heart palpitations without any psychoactive effect, the substance they are taking should be a liquid preparation of DMT and Harmala (or some other MAOI). The MAOI is needed because pure DMT is not active when swallowed, unless there is a MAOI that activates it.

Heres a fun fact! The poster for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is actually the inspiration for the design of Rango (voiced by Johnny Depp). You can tell by the shape of Rango's neck is similar to the poster of the movie in which it is bent to the right and the big head is leaning to the left. Plus both of films main protagonists are played by Johnny Depp. A neat little Easter egg to the cult classic in an animated film about Johnny Depp as a cowboy chameleon.
Depp got to look at a lot of Thompson's original notes too, with things that didnt get into the book. Not sure if any of those things affected the screenplay, but they did affect the character Depp played.

One of my favorite American writers. One of my all time favorite movies. "Where the Buffalo Roam" too. Bill Murray was great . That is a very underrated movie. I think if you saw Fear and Loathing first you might not like Where the Buffalo Roam. But it is a great movie. And, of course, the novel is better . Hells Angels was his first book and the first book I read of his like 20+ years ago. I have everything he wrote now .
If you've ever done solvent, the dread fear and retro child like nightmare coupled with the moment of clarity that leaves you cold and aware of the true nature of this universe once applied to this movie rings true and tops any acid trip.
Joey Martinez I saw it over 20 years ago at an independent cinema I remember a scene where Bill Murray was in a car snorting coke like a maniac and a scene where there’s a drug fuelled party on a plane and then the camera switches to outside the plane and it reveals they have not even taken off from the runway yet I was only about 15 and very high at the time so I remember little else but I do know I thought it was a good movie at the time!

He said the previous producers wanted to have a scene where was surfing a wave with that quote about the high water mark and he said he lost his shit it was so stupid.

A few of us tripped in our younger days and fuck was this fun to watch. Aside from always putting it on at parties and getting ripped Terry Gilliam was brilliant in his execution of this vision. Depp hasn't gotten out of this character since. Benicio was terrific too.

You left out one of my favorite scenes in the book where a housekeeper walks in on Dr. Gonzo vomiting into his shoe. After Gonzo tackles this woman, covered in vomit, Duke handles the situation like he always does; intense lying. And they convince this poor woman that they are cops staking out a hotel drug ring. I find this scene particularly hilarious because she's absolutely convinced by these drugged up, naked men who attacked her and leaves the room with a smile :)

I still love them both but Fear and Loathing is the winner for me... What a great movie!

As someone whose experimented heavily with psychedelics; I can say without a shadow of a doubt that, sans the immersive reptile transformations, the scene in the bar is on point and even triggers something akin to flashbacks to those who have had prior experiences with the drug. The sound distortion, movements of patterns and outlines, the unexplained light and color changes accompanied by extra glare and of course the very present fear and paranoia. An absolutely stunning and informed trip scene that will never be never be topped.
Immersive reptile transformation can happen but it doesn't look exactly like that lol
I really love this movie. It's so bizarre and unlike any other film.
Love it or hate it, it's definitely a trip.

It's amazing how Gilliam has actually never taken acid - because it's easily the most accurate cinematic depiction of what dealing with that terrible drug is like AHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeEEEEE!!!!!

I just saw this movie last night, and I received the book from the mail today. And now this video is up...
I just ordered the book yesterday.
I'm already halfway through the book and so far it's pretty much from page to screen beside the tiny differences that are in this video it's pretty much word for word.
Its all part of the plan, like manifest destiny.

Also... One of my favourite parts of this movie is that it can be interpreted in multiple ways and different people can have vastly different - but justified - emotional responses to it... much like a song.
When I first saw it, most of my friends connected with the drug aspect, but I felt a deeper connection to the way Hunter S. Tompson could describe how deeply he missed the passion he shared with everyone around him during his favourite moment in time. He was in the middle of recognizing that an era that would forever define him was slipping away and his love of it would never be enough to save it.
Think that's a pretty universal thing that we all go through. Though we may not be able to articulate it as well as Raoul Duke.
One of my favorite movies....That only few understood.
Also I feel Depps portrayal in fear and loathing captured Thompson's idiosyncrasies perfectly but Murray's portrayal in where the buffalo roam captures his personality far better.
The neon snake would have been amazing to see personally but maybe I'm only imagining how good it would be instead of knowing it.
Or maybe I'm just high.

I watched this movie several times on copious amounts of LSD and each time it took on a whole new tone in my head. Truly a masterpiece.
Why not mention how he thought they were coming for his pineal gland....?
They also went to Vegas to kill a "scag baron" (heroin dealer) named Savage Henry who ripped them off. That's why Duke woke up to Gonzo's bloody knife and that's probably the only reason Gonzo came with in the first place. The Mint 400 race was just a side activity and just another reason to justify actually going there. The real objective was probably just to kill Savage Henry and then binge on drugs.
I personally think Hunter S. Thompson and Oscar Zeta Acosta really went to Vegas to kill a heroin dealer and everything else written or focused on in the book was simply a cover. Thompson and his Attorney basically got away with murder by playing off the story as being "partially fictitious".
I believe that was just a farce that they said to screw with hitchhiker’s when they were high as hell looking to have a laugh. He wrote the book and also a article for Rolling Stone Magazine about Oscar Zeta Acosta named The Brown Buffalo.

The pulsing changing and growing up the faces was definitely one of the most accurate depictions in a movie, things turning entirely into other things or unicorns popping up like most movies is never realistic haha, maybe with dmt and other intense ones but Gilliam pulled that off great, similar to his python animations
I wish the movie would have included he part where Duke drives the White Whale into Lake Meed.
This is still one of the most iconic and unadulterated art films ive watched, definitely in my top ten films. Noting the various changes from the book to make it more streamlined has given me more reason to love it.

Just noticed the Thompson poster behind the desk in Dr. Gonzo's office
Rarely for me, I read the book first. And loved it, but wondered how it would work on film. Sure enough, Terry Gilliam uploaded everything I saw in my mind onto the screen. An absolute masterpiece. :-)
I'll also add these few:
- In the beginning of the book he spends a lot more time describing the initial gathering of the car, tape recorder, and there's a whole scene where he haggles with some financial person for cash for the trip.
- In the book, when he flee's the first hotel (the telegram part mentioned here) he willingly takes Dr Gonzo to the airport and spends the rest his money there on useless trinkets in the gift shop. In the movie he just says the Dr abandoned him.
- Dr. Gonzo negotiates a deal with the maids at one point for 1000 bars of transparent soap (soap appears in the movie but no explanation)
- In the book he says the cop who pulled him over was a young eager looking fellow who was obviously new to the force. (def not G.B. haha. And the cop doesn't ask for a kiss/say he's "lonely" in the book)
- there's also an interesting section in the book where he describes a time in his life when in a pre-psychedelics phase he tried to seek advice on LSD from a known spiritual hippie leader and was unsuccessful. This part could have been cool in the movie.
SO GLAD you mentioned the cop asking for a kiss!! It irks me that they left that in, and then abruptly cut to "I felt raped, the pig had done me on all fronts".. *Totally* confuses the context of the scene!
Fun fact adrenachrome is a really drug but it’s produced in a lab not by harvesting the adrenal gland, it’s also not really used to get high usually it’s used as a way to try to stop bleeding, one COULD take adrenachrome recreationally but straight epinephrine would have a stronger effect while also being a bit cheaper. Personally I think hunter got some random drug from a dude who told him it was adrenachrome along with some spooky story so that he could charge more for it and hunter completely bought it
This book and movie had a huge impact on me. Very touched to see that one of my favourite TH-cam channels feels the same way.

When I worked at a factory I listened to the audiobook of this and it had some incredible voice actors that made it see like I was just listening to an uncut version of the movie. Really entertaining 10/10 would recommend the book/audiobook.
Most of the moviegoers never understood what the film is about. It's the American Dream!

Listen to the commentary of the film. You'll get more than 9 things you didn't know. I haven't watched the commentary version for sometime. But I remember realizing when I did, that every odd facts/trivia article about this movie got most of their information from the commentary.

Gilliam wrecked my world with this movie. Well done film maker, well done.
I've seen this movie twice on mushrooms. It's definitely a trip.
I watched it the first time i did shrooms, it took a friend and i about 5 hours to finish it, we had to keep pausing it to take breaks, go outside and talk to the trees.
It's definitely a fun experience. Just puts you in the mindset of the protagonist. I had to wait an hour or two because when I first tried I couldn't understand a word he was saying. I asked what was that buzzing sound. My buddy told me it was his voice and I laughed for like what seemed an eternity but was most likely 45 seconds.

Often I put it on at the slowest slow-mo speed, like 1/16 or something. Then it lasts the entire trip. Put it on a small tv with a long cord so you can move it around, put the screen facing the ceiling, etc.
I saw it on acid and when gonzo was talking about killing the dude out in the desert his red eyes scared the shit out of me. Got kinda uncomfortable and put on planet earth. Other than that, sober, absolutely love the movie

Being a 2000 baby, I just feel that this film sets the atmosphere of the Vietnam war and drug era in a way that makes me want to experience it so bad and watching this film over and over again sort of allows you to experience it. Thank you Thompson and Gilliam

Huge fan of your channel. Bigger fan of both the movie and book: Fear & Loathing. I've seen it at least 2 dozen times and immediately mention it anytime anyone ever asks what my favourite film is. This video filled me with the same kind of pessimistic hope and nostalgia that I feel about F&LiLV. Glad to see that I'm not the only one affected by it.

I am 24 and have seen this Film more than 10 Times. And every Time I just loved it. The Cinematographie of this movie is just superb. And it shows the most accurate effects of certain drugs that I am familiar with.
First time I saw this I was so happy I never tried any of these drugs. Freaky ass movie made me feel like I was on the crap myself. I can't imagine watching this while on any drug. I would probably have a panic attack or some kind of freak out. I had to watch it like 3 times before I understand what the hell was going on and even then I had to have someone explain parts to me. It's a crazy trip of a movie I watch once in a while.
Gilliam's "Fear and Loathing" is one of the best book to movie adaptations ever.

No mention of Ralph Steadman's penmanship of the inspirational illustrations in the book? I saw this done as a play maybe forty years ago in pub-theatre in London. They had the Red Shark and the White Whale on stage in the form of fold-out painted wooden panels.
Extract of the human pineal gland would give DMT, that of the adrenal gland would give Epinephrine. But in the movie it's called Adrenochrome, which is not a psychoactive substance. Considering Epinephrine/Adrenaline only gives heart palpitations without any psychoactive effect, the substance they are taking should be a liquid preparation of DMT and Harmala (or some other MAOI). The MAOI is needed because pure DMT is not active when swallowed, unless there is a MAOI that activates it.

Heres a fun fact! The poster for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is actually the inspiration for the design of Rango (voiced by Johnny Depp). You can tell by the shape of Rango's neck is similar to the poster of the movie in which it is bent to the right and the big head is leaning to the left. Plus both of films main protagonists are played by Johnny Depp. A neat little Easter egg to the cult classic in an animated film about Johnny Depp as a cowboy chameleon.

Depp got to look at a lot of Thompson's original notes too, with things that didnt get into the book. Not sure if any of those things affected the screenplay, but they did affect the character Depp played.

not sure if anyone has mentioned this but the scene where he talks to the girl in the diner is actually a big moment in the book, as it's when. as far as i know, he finds someone who is actually pure and not degenerate in Las Vegas

i think this is one of the few books that was adapted very well as a movie.
One of my favorite American writers. One of my all time favorite movies. "Where the Buffalo Roam" too. Bill Murray was great . That is a very underrated movie. I think if you saw Fear and Loathing first you might not like Where the Buffalo Roam. But it is a great movie. And, of course, the novel is better . Hells Angels was his first book and the first book I read of his like 20+ years ago. I have everything he wrote now .
Watching this movie on 3.5 grams of mushrooms is an intense journey..
If you've ever done solvent, the dread fear and retro child like nightmare coupled with the moment of clarity that leaves you cold and aware of the true nature of this universe once applied to this movie rings true and tops any acid trip.

Joey Martinez I saw it over 20 years ago at an independent cinema I remember a scene where Bill Murray was in a car snorting coke like a maniac and a scene where there’s a drug fuelled party on a plane and then the camera switches to outside the plane and it reveals they have not even taken off from the runway yet
I was only about 15 and very high at the time so I remember little else but I do know I thought it was a good movie at the time!
Ive watched that movie at least 5 times, its quite funny, more light hearted than Fear and Loathing in LV

Toxic Potato exactly, I saw an interview with Thompson where he said that quote was his favourite thing he wrote I believe. When they played it with that song “get together” it was perfection. He said the previous producers wanted to have a scene where was surfing a wave with that quote about the high water mark and he said he lost his shit it was so stupid.

A few of us tripped in our younger days and fuck was this fun to watch. Aside from always putting it on at parties and getting ripped Terry Gilliam was brilliant in his execution of this vision. Depp hasn't gotten out of this character since. Benicio was terrific too.

You left out one of my favorite scenes in the book where a housekeeper walks in on Dr. Gonzo vomiting into his shoe. After Gonzo tackles this woman, covered in vomit, Duke handles the situation like he always does; intense lying. And they convince this poor woman that they are cops staking out a hotel drug ring. I find this scene particularly hilarious because she's absolutely convinced by these drugged up, naked men who attacked her and leaves the room with a smile :)
