I just purchased a used K-1 - someone made 2,000 exposures on it and sold it - and I was a bit terrified of updating the firmware given the horror stories that I've heard over the years about people bricking their cameras during firmware upgrades. The Pentax K-1 upgrades are incredibly useful, especially setting an exposure time in Bulb, which I've wondered for years why every DSLR and Mirrorless in the world doesn't already have that function. Thanks a lot for helping with updating.On the Pentax / Ricoh firmware update site there is no mentioning to extract .bin file from the downloaded folder and that created confusion when I tried to update firmware.When I watched your clip everything became clear!
Ok I have downloaded the latest firmware version 1.30 and have extracted the .bin file to the sd card and its at the top of the root directory and i have put it in the camera with a fully charged battery and followed the instructions the screen said "now loading" that message went off after a little bit and the screen is now blank and the camera is still on but no "complete" at the bottom left hand corner of the screen? is it still loading the new firmware?
Is the ist dl2 still a good camera? Just wanted to know because i have a friend who would sell it to me but since it is already 11 years old im not sure about that..
The *ist DL is really dated and you'll likely not be that thrilled with the results. If you're looking a cheap body that will deliver, we recommend the K-x, K-r, K-30, or K-50.

He thinks it's either the sensor or something in the camera itself. I read on the Pentax Forums that it may be the firmware, but I don't see my new camera in the list, or any list at all. Which method to I use to update my *ist DL?

You're not supposed to open the file on your computer, you put it on the SD card and put it in your camera. Your comment WAS posted 3 years ago, and may no longer apply but if I helped, that's great. Edit: I just did it myself and I know what you meant. In fact, I had this exact problem just now. When you run the .exe, don't use the default location when the dialog appears. Put the .exe on the desktop and run it there, it'll default to the desktop where the files will extract.
Hello, the cameras that were pictured were darkened and so small so I wasnt sure which method is used for the pentax k100d. Will it be the first or second method? Thank you!
hi, very nice video. i heard a firmware upgrade is needed if im having a Memory card error problem. i already tried the cards on other cameras and it works there. only on my pentax k50. but the instructions here require to place the firmware update on a 'SD' card. is there a work around on this because as I said, it doesnt read the card, just says memory card error. other factors i can point is, if there is no card inserted, the cam works fine, it just doesnt save. and i cannot format the cards since it says format failed. thanks in advance. add: can i use the usb cable and connect it directly to the pc? can I upgrade it from there?
Try doing a full format of your card using your PC (rather than a quick format). This should many the memory card error go away. Then copy the firmware file and try again. If you're using an SDXC card, make sure you format it to exFAT. There is no other way to update firmware other than through a memory card. For more help, don't hesitate to post on the forum- we have a very large troubleshooting section.

Forgot to mention that this is to update the firmware on my daughter's K10D. From what I can gather, it may be telling me that the update is incompatible with windows 10.
I'm trying to update the firmware on my K3. I have the file copied to the SD card, placed card in camera. I'm holding down the MENU button while turning on the camera, but nothing is happening. I get the same screen I normally do when turning the camera on to take pictures. HELP!! Please!
This usually happens if (1) the update you downloaded doesn't correspond to your camera, (2) you did not extract the .BIN file from the zip that you downloaded, or (3) you placed the .BIN file inside the DCIM folder, instead of outside. For The 2nd method, when you say "applies to camera models listed here" (or something like that), there is not model listed, your screen is blank.... you need to edit your video (and maybe update it with latest models)
Thanks for the comment. We've added the latest models to the annotations (which may not show up on select devices, but seem to be working fine on a PC). Generally speaking, the menu button method works for the flagship line and all other cameras released prior to 2012. The main menu method works on 2012+ consumer/beginner models, such as the K-50 or K-S1.
Hi I normally use USB cable to download files from camera (KS2), as I don't have SD card reader. Can I format card and then copy bin file to a camera using usb cable (on root level). Please suggest Thanks !
My k30 afc and c on switch will not work I can’t take a photo I have to put in manual then I need to shoot in manual but it’s not taking clear pictures help is it my settings

Hopefully the camera just shut itself off after it completed the process. Try restarting it and see if it powers on. If the battery is dead, your camera is probably bricked. If not, you should be fine. Best of luck!
thanks, I did that after a little bit and it worked, I feel it should have been specified, especially in this vid, that the updates dont take long. And that the completed screen doesnt stay on long enough, it shut it self off I guess shortly after, but I checked in menu and it updated my k3 ii thanks again.
A new or different sd card would be better...if you do not have time to upload all your pictures on your card. I use a 256gb card so using a different SD card works better for me..as I have plenty of smaller cards at hand

The power+menu button method used with the K-5 is the one that works with most cameras. The other method is for the K-01, K-30, and K-50.

The K100D uses the first method, same as the K-5. Press and hold the menu button at startup.

Can you use the card with new version to update more than one of same model camera rather than formatting the card as in the video?

I have a k-x and even new batteries show as depleted I was told a firmware update will fix it but there's no way for it to be "fully charged"
My lumix fz20 isn’t working right, every time I put a SIM card in it it says SIM card error and I wonder if I update it will it work?

Yes, you should be able to transfer the file without any problems using a USB cable.

sorry to be a negative voice but "cameras shown here" then the image is greyed out making it difficult to see which cameras apply.
