I'm going to school for working on cars but I've been watching this old house for the last 5 years or so and even longer watching other shows on TV, I love house building would love to have my own company restoring houses one day love the process. TOH is amazing, anyone who gets a chance working and learning with them is lucky.
I can only imagine the zoning/coding hoops that needed to be jumped thru in such a historical city like Charleston. Definitely turned out to be a beautiful rebuild so it must be well worth it!
I am actually really impressed with these designers. It might seem silly but the ability to weave both the modern idea of a "social" open floor plan and traditional kitchens which are suppose to be tucked away and "efficient" They managed to do both without the negatives of either. Not a hermit kitchen and not a huge waste of space for dividing the open floor plan rooms.

This house is Absolutely Stunningly Gorgeous, Amazing transformation, Very lucky to have something to start with , What I'm working on now, to have my own oasis 😀

yamahonkawazuki When Bob Vila hosted the show was more from the perspective of a developer, they would mostly use subs local to the different projects and his segments focused on workflow and budget. Now that they use the same group of experts on each job the host is really there to introduce each segment and add some color commentary.
he is actually a ceo of a company and is worth like 6 million dollars mainly from stock options. guy is well off for sure just does this for fun pretty much

I'm curious to know what species of wood you are framing with. Is that some kind of pine? Here in the part of California I'm in, it's by far and away douglas fir that we use. So this looks unusual! Somehow, it looks a little more 'user friendly' than doug fir, too. Any opinions on that point?
Is it not quicker / cheaper to just demo / rebuild at this point? Or is it one of those grandfathered zoning issues where you can't build where it is if you start new?

@@lo4012 yes, I like to prep on the counter so having all that island space is nice. Stove in the center island would’ve been amazing but probably $$$ I’ve seen these cool houses with a built in hidden range hood too. Flush with the ceiling 👌👌
Did anyone else notice all the horrible trim and paint work on the Charlestown house? Look at the baseboards and floor closely. Then there’s a whole lack of door knob hardware through the house😂

yeah.. imo the white on white makes the cabinet uppers disappear and look empty. Should have played with the sheen at least. Make the cabinets pop against the plain walls.
I love these videos but I wish someone would take a #2 Philips screwdriver and a hammer and fix the music guys hearing. Just stop with the music already. I crave the construction site sounds of tools and construction. You would never hear this music in my play list... Just saying..
Mary looks a little too dainty for construction as a laborer. The way she held that sledgehammer? I just cringed! However, if she's apprenticing for maybe project foreman or manager or even general contractor, basically positions where she isn't doing the 'heavy lifting' she'd probably be better suited.
Really doesn't take too much strength to be able to wield a hammer. She can learn. Put on a couple pounds of the right muscles in time, and get better at technique and it's easy. I can tell you from working with my wife who had little experience and is far weaker that she can usually find a much more energy efficient way than I can.
I don’t think that she’s left handed. I’ve seen that with people who aren’t used to working with certain tools. They’ll hold the tool normally but use it backwards instead of working ambidextrously (because they can’t yet) and don’t reposition (for a variety of possible reasons). She’ll need to learn to do both but there’s no reason to think that she can’t get there.
I can tell by the comments that every one of the commenters is a 'progressive'. I don't care who you are, there are just some jobs that only men and women of a certain size (let's just say, not petite, or dainty) can do. I'd be worried if I was on the jobsite with a tiny woman like that but hey, maybe that's just me in the 'soy latte, man-bunned women are stronger and better-at-everything-than -men 21st century wuss world! LoL
This Old House, I have a question to ask and I'm curious about the answer that I'm going to get from you and the comments from your Subscribers. I have always been in a relatable career to construction. I have done construction Accounts Payable for almost 25 years. My question is, as a gay man myself, I know a lot of gay men that would love to be in construction, but frankly they don't want all the BS that would come from the Guys on the job site. Is there an avenue of some sort that these Guys could go and complete a good days work without all the hassle from the big mouth guys on the site?
Prove their expectations wrong in the quality of the work. I don't work in the building trades for a career, but I do work with diesel mechanics - so I completely know and understand where you're coming from. Just remember that there are big mouth guys everywhere - not just on a job site. Show the supervisor that you're able to do the job and do it well, that's how respect is earned in my opinion. There are a lot of lousy macho know it all carpenters out there, but there are also lousy macho accountants. A supervisor can fire someone for lousy workmanship or performance, but they can't fire someone for their sexuality. It does get difficult when they ask about girlfriends/kids/etc. but you can either be honest right away and get it out of the way, or lie. My experience is that lying is a lot harder to deal with long term and the longer you do it the more guilt you'll feel for being dishonest with people you've become friends with. Look up the term "36 hours of pain" on google. It pertains to business, but the concept is the same: It basically states that the pain of keeping a person - in this case a secret is more difficult long term. Once you make the decision to terminate a person/come out, you'll have about 36 hours of discomfort/awkwardness and people will move on again. One of the most difficult things about working in our world is assumption, I think. Everybody just assumes you're a straight male because you walk or talk like one or show no tell tale signs of "gay." Coming out is not a once in a life time thing, we have to do it for the rest of our lives unfortunately. Good luck to you!

One rarely takes ingredients from the fridge straight to the pot on the stove. You wash it first and/or cut it up.

An apprentice thats been working in the game for 6 years!?. Americans have a different view of apprentices then the British.
Can't believe they are allowed to build house without braces and tie downs. Terrible building codes to allow this type of poor construction.
