  • In this episode of the Trans Life Podcast, we're talking about a pretty cool thing that happened to me recently, which was meeting two of my trans guy heroes, Jamie Raines and Ty Turner. Two amazing people who made figuring out I was trans a lot less scary.

I love this video so much! I also love that you can tell Thom has put a lot of time into his book and he loves his books so much.
Also, I haven’t met any of my heroes yet. But, I will be meeting cavetown soon! Im so excited
(Also did you know cavetown will be in Chicago… are you going?)

I was lucky enough to go to a Cavetown show a year or two ago, and it was seriously amazing! Not sure if I'll be able to go to this one, but I hope you have as wonderful a time as I did!

I'm so happy for you. I hope all three of them read Dreamers and I hope they tell Jackson Bird to read it asap, too. Because the character you named after him is pure perfection. ❤
Shoutout to the person who told you here in the comments that Jamie and Shaaba were coming to Chicago! I think I know who it was, but they don't know yet, hehe. :D What a nice surprise.
And here I was, wondering how the hell you had managed to time your book's release date just in time for their visit!
Your presence online means so much to me, it definitely makes me feel less alone, and thanks to the space you've created and maintain for us, I have been able to find wonderful online friends.
Also, you inspired me to start reading again, which, I learned, also makes people feel less alone! I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know that before I found it in a list of "why it's healthy to read books" or something in 2022.
I don't have any other trans or queer heroes. Sadly neither the TH-cam nor the livestreams thing or the music of Cavetown or Noahfinnce or the pop culture as a whole are enjoyable for me, so I am super thankful they are there for visibility and education etc., which helps me in turn because they create a more open society and a happier and healthier community, but I don't enjoy it myself. I've tried for at least a year.
People that made a huge difference for me in figuring out my gender and in feeling less alone, were a kid on the school bus in the 90s, who only rode the bus with us once (probably for good reason), who I couldn't tell if they were a girl or a boy. Unfortunately I stared (I'm sorry, I was a scared and autistic little kid without manners) but didn't speak to them, of course, I never spoke to people. (They didn't go to our school, but got on at the stop of the school deep in the woods where the "bad" children went.)
Then my mother and her boyfriend wouldn't stop blaring this one Marla Glen CD in the 90s. When I finally asked if the voice was from a man or a woman, they told me that not everyone has to be a man or a woman. In 2005 (I still had no computer or Internet), I read a book about gender and antisemitism, a collection of essays, and one of them was my favourite among many amazing essays and when I looked at what the book said about the author, it avoided pronouns ,they had a gender neutral name, and everything in the description made me dare think that there were maybe other people like me out there somewhere?! That's enough life story though. The queer encounters pre internet weren't as rare (though still way too rare!) and would take up too much space. I can not imagine a better role model than you. You (or let's say your online persona, since I don't know you) are/is literally the best person on earth in my book. I've never seen or heard of anyone who is both smart and kind in that combination! And while I can't strive to be smart or to be more binary trans, I can try to be more kind and you are the best influence I can wish for.
(My head is not functioning atm, so this is probably not matching the assignment, but it's written now, so. I can always edit 100 times later. :P Thank you for reading all this, if you've read all this.

I was so surprised and happy when I saw you met Jamie. I love him and Shaaba. They're both so funny and wise and inspiring. Very happy you got to meet these people that helped you out, and honestly it is just further proof that having representation/resources/etc etc is so important for people. It's always come up hearing people say that they felt inspired by other creators to put themselves out there for others to not have to go through what they did. Super glad as well you did not puke on anyone XD And that's certainly one hell of a way to come to a realization of your trans-ness and accepting your dysphoria lol
These doesn't *technically* count but years ago I met a youtuber I used to enjoy and became semi friends with as he was coming to the city near me. It was a really nice time getting to hang out with someone I enjoyed watching/talking to, we had lunch together and it was just an all-around nice time. (Sadly we don't speak anymore but I still wish him well) And a few years ago I got to travel and stay with a streamer and his girlfriend whom I became friends with that was so special to me cause it was my first time traveling alone and then being with people I genuinely cared about. Was hard not to cry when I got home cause I missed the feeling of being around them. (Dont ask me why I keep befriending content creators, I dont know how it happens) Last year I did get to meet some of my long time friends irl for the first time which was so surreal, one of which i've been friends with for over 10 years now and she was one of the people who really helped me come out of my shell and into who I am today. Was very life changing suddenly being in a setting where I felt like I could really just let go and be Me instead of my curated self. Probably similar to how you felt being around everyone at that event.

What a wonderful story! I am so happy you made it a priority to attend because it feels like it was extremely important for you to be there, perhaps essential. It certainly sounds like it was all meant to be. I love it that you share so many details of your experience and feelings, too, as I totally related to your travel anxiety. Living in NYC I also do not have a car and rely on public transportation. I am grateful every time NJ Transit or Metro North trains announce their routes before the doors close and the train starts moving. Even with announcements, more than once I have managed to be on the wrong train and always when I had a deadline for arriving at my intended location. I am so glad it all worked out for you...and you got a free T shirt, too! Hopefully Darla and Benny have fully forgiven you for leaving them for the night. I agree completely with you that even if reach only one person, it's all worth it. Though, I have a strong feeling you have reached, and will continue to touch, many lives with your with your wonderful podcasts that radiate so much hope, positivity, tolerance, and love. I feel so fortunate to have found you!

Thom!!!!! I'm so happy you managed to go!!!. First, thank you @snoopy_J for making me watch this video asap🤗
Second, I'm so immensly happy Thom that you didn't give up because of the location of the event and went for it! I love how you described that the cool looking crowd made you feel certain that you're in the right place 😊
Third, your videos are definitely helping people and making a difference. They help me, particularly that I am similar age as you and only recently came out and properly admitted to myself that I'm queer. So thank you ❤

Great video as always! Your videos usually make me feel better and this one did too, but it also made me cry, so thank you for that as well. I'm so happy that you got to meet your heroes and that they turned out to be such wonderful people. I haven't met any of my heroes, but I'm fine just admiring them from afar.
I hope most of the comments are positive and that the transphobes take at least Pride Month off from commenting on any videos.

I'm glad you talked about how you got there and how you conked out the day after because I was like, "did he get home OK?!" but didn't want to message you in case you were asleep. Lol.
Also SO HAPPY you got to go~♡

I’m so happy that you were able to get to meet them, that’s so exciting and sounds like a fun adventure! In 2019 I was able to meet a couple Broadway stars from one of my favorite musicals and it was amazing! I also got to see Cavetown on his tour a few days ago in Berkeley, I didn’t get to meet him but I had such a fun time anyways.

I love this so much. ❤ Where I'm from, we don't see a lot of openly queer people (at least I don't), so your story is just wonderful. I'm really happy it worked out. 😊

Fourth, I can't believe you didn't know Jamie was going a book tour!!! It's all over his socials. Thom, you need to update your Insta feed to show you more than just cat videos 😜

I did actually know he was going on a book tour, it just never occurred to me that he'd be anywhere near me! :) (But yes, probably fewer cat videos would help. :P)

23:45 Pretty much the people you mentioned but special shoutout to Eugene Lee Yang who I still think is awesome and a great source of inspiration.
Also, there’s a whole coterie of queer people (and allies) from the OG BuzzFeed days. Too many to mention.

I still can't believe this happened! I'm so happy for you!
I love that everyone was as kind in person as they appear to be online. 🥹 Jamie holding your book in the pictures and Ty gifting you a second shirt were especially sweet moments.
It's amazing that you were able to meet people who have helped and inspired you so much. I know you are/ you will be that person for so many people. 🤗
