What about a mending plate to avoid splitting for the blocking method? and If one uses higher-grade wood does that solve the issue?

I am not sure what you mean by a mending plate but if you use Simpson SDS Heavy Duty Connectors you get 400# resistance for each screw. They don't split the wood so 3 screws per block should be all you ever need.

I may have missed it, but what is the (minimum) thickness of the plywood required for sheathing? Is it 15/32"? What was used in the video?

Yes, 15/32 STRUCTUAL 1 They make "rated" and structual 1, you want structural 1

Which local lumber yard around Berkeley/Albany you recommend for quality plywood? @@bayarearetrofit5814

We make them with components no longer available. I understand Amazon has something like it.

Do you recommend pressure treaded wood for shear wall and block wood? Does it rot the hardware over time (even if its galvanized) Stupid question sorry...

I don't see why it would be necessary. New pressure treated wood is almost always ACQ which is very corrosive, even to hot dipped galvanized nails. Any fasteners used with it must be stainless steel. Type in ACQ in the search bar of the Bayarearetrofit.com website and read all out it.
