WATCHING this interview, I was struck by the brilliance of our host. Her questions were thoughtful, insightful, and perfectly crafted to bring out the essence of our conversation. It was clear she had come well-prepared-she had done her homework, truly understanding the material and the heart of the story we wanted to tell.
We hadn’t rehearsed, and I hadn’t seen her set of questions in advance. I arrived just minutes before taping, briefly meeting the talented team and the host, the accomplished ballerina Liza Macuja Elizalde. I handed her a copy of the book, and she flipped through it swiftly. Before we could even exchange a few casual words, we were already rolling!
But this turned out to be one of my most joyful interviews. I felt fully in my element, and Liza was the consummate professional. She knew precisely how to navigate the show’s time limits, smoothly transitioning from one question to the next. Her pace was sharp and engaging, keeping us moving while making every question count. There were brief moments when I stumbled over details, my mind racing faster than my words. But, thankfully, everything clicked back into place quickly.
I am deeply grateful to the team behind Art2Art WIth Liza Macuja Elizalde, especially to Liza for her skillful hosting, and to my longtime friends Susan de Guzman, formerly of Inquirer, and Anjie Blardony Ureta of Malaya. These two reliable writers of print media have been dear friends since the '90s, and seeing them in this new context brought such warmth to the experience.
As for the coffee table book, OBRA MAESTRA: A Homage to Philippine Fashion, Heritage, and History, a lovely surprise awaited us after the interview when Fred Elizalde, Liza’s husband and executive producer, joined us. As he leafed through the book, his face lit up at seeing Dr. Henry Otley Beyer featured-a figure who was not only foundational to the content but also deeply significant to Fred personally, as Beyer had been his mentor. It was a moment that affirmed the book’s purpose and resonated with all of us.
