Roger decoster worked the big yz very well..when he rode and got mad he was untouchable he's the only rider I've seen that realy impressed me riders like this we will.never see again
I am in the process of restoring a ‘84. All Nos parts, really nice to do,except the money part. That’s no fun at all.😬 But I do like the hunt for Nos parts, took me 10 weeks just to get the koyo bearings for the gearbox😁.
Gary Shaw iv owned a 83 model 490 for the last 32 years. It was the and still is the fastest mx bike I’ve ever ridden. It was an ex Finke desert race bike.. power delivery was like that of an80 cc bike. No bottomend grunt , no midrange, then bang it was reving to 8 grand. It was all or nothing. The best handling smoothest riding 14 inches fear wheel trVel at the baack and 13 at the front. You could not bottom it out even on the biggest highest of jumps. Head and port work was done in the US. Very easy to start too. Had a 40 mm Bing carby on it. Havent ridden it in 30 years, still sitting in my shed.. it made my 83 CR 480 feel like an asmatic slug.. im xoing a complete resto of my 480 atm.
Yamaha made a pretty good bike, they were always my favorite, makes me wonder why they just didn't work out all the kinks or just develop a YZ 500 with these kinks worked out....I don't have nothing against the Honda and Kawasaki but that's pretty much all you saw and there was going into the mid late 80s and in 500 class in general. RM was discontinued I believe, not many on 490s, it was all about the CR and KX. You see the other brands in all the other classes but not 500. I just like the variety I guess.
Thank's a lot Chris🙏😊🙏 My dream this machine!!! I have been riding my 250 yz 1984 for some years and the 490 was really amazing, but my arms weren't strong enough !!! The great Hakan Carlqvist was the beast's Master at this time !!! 😄😄😄 Friendly Richard Lionheart 👍😎🇫🇷
Nice YZ, brings back a lot of memories. I rode and raced locally both the '84 and '82. I thought the '84 had a better power band that was not anywhere near the mid-upper range as the 82.
Does anyone know the specific silencer that’s used here? I need a spark arrestor for my 1985 yz490 so I can ride it in the national forests. Please help! Thanks!

Do you rode one?
@@Tigerloco70 not until years later as an adult. But grew up watching as much racing as I possibly could!
I always like to ask present and past YZ490 owners what that thought about their YZ490.
There's one up for sale in my area in good condition with paperwork for 2200 should I pick it up?
Thank's a lot Chris🙏😊🙏
