I've had numerous people commenting on this video that "airshow jets are kept in immaculate condition". As stated in the video, this bug went back into front line service still in red. Here is an image of it from Maple Flag the year after in 2018: images.app.goo.gl/gKzyN8jBeEEA4Qx5A Note the weathering and armament. Lastly, people keep commenting I am saying "decal" wrong. Maybe according to your regional dialect I am, but not in my area. Just because I say it differently than you doesn't mean I'm wrong and you are right. Same as the letter "Z"... Lieutenant...etc. if that is upsetting you so much, the internet may not be the place for you.
Are you from Calgary, because I saw you and your son at the Springbank airshow in Calgary, I was a volunteer at the cadet tent next to the helicopter. I saw both your wonderful "History in Scale" shirts, its got to be you!
I've been up close to the Blue Angels jets and met all the pilots and crew. Trust me those jets aren't pretty up close either. There are nicks and small dents in places, the gear doors on number 5 are always broke from the dirty roll, and they don't bother replacing them. There are fuel leaks coming out of the engine and they said this "you know something is wrong when there isn't fuel leaking". They are at the last of their service life. These jets have everything stripped out of them except for what they need to fly. As soon as they max their time they go straight to a museum or boneyard. There is paint always getting chipped off the aircraft so they carry paint with them for touchups when needed. I can't wait to see how the super hornets look with the blue angels, though they will have to change a few things in the routine due to the weight of the super hornets being heavier.
Canada doesn't have dedicated Bugs for the airshow circuit, they have all their systems in place for a quicker re-entry to service. It will be cool to see the Blues in Super Hornets but I don't think they'll be modifying the show too much. The Super Hornet is heavier with more thrust, so it balances out. Plus they're stripped and fly slick so it shouldn't affect performance. It will be awesome to see. Hope they come to Alberta next year.
Fantastic. The weathering in my opinion was tastefully done. I will also add the add the way you narrate your build makes it easy to follow along. That has to be the bright spot of your display cabinet. Well done Sir.
I really like how you explain the trials and tribulations of the " making of " the kit. Some others just show how it all come together like a miracle. Very good job on the kit and the video !
Luckily Leading Edge broke it down in a way that made sense. I met a dude who built the same markings last year and we nearly hugged because we knew each other's pain lol
I feel like I have to know if you know my wife...since anytime my wife mentions she is from Scotland she gets asked "Oh do you know so-and-so?" Just to be funny she now says "Aye he owes me money still."
Thanks for the heads up! I have a Kinetic F-18 lined up and this video will help a lot. I just finished a Kinetic Texas F-16 and it was a blast! Though I had issues with the decals, they melted with Mr. Hobby softener and the decals broke apart, it was weird!
KUDOS to you on showing what a lot of people don t show and its the fiddly part were you have to "fit" both fuselagem and wings... A lot of respect for that! Its not just about building a beautiful Hornet like you did its about warning those who have less experience on the dificulties ahead! Subed!
Thanks Alex! I'm trying to be honest with my builds so people don't get blind sided or think it's an easy build because all the fiddly parts are edited out
I've heard those decals can be a beast, it was cool to see your methods of applying them. That is my favorite livery for the Canadian hornets. Nicely done.
Just to correct you on the number of CF-188's Canada purchased. In 1980 Canada purchased 138 CF-188's with 98 being the single seat variants (CF-188A) and 40 dual-seat variants (CF-188B) with options for 20 more, which were never exercised. The CF-188 was delivered starting in 1982 with the last one in 1988. There were 3 Squadrons permanently based in Germany totaling 54 CF-188's. The remainder, 5 squadrons, 2 which would reinforce Europe in the event of war, were based in Canada for defense and training. In 2002 major upgrades to the CF-188 were started. 62 single seat and 18 dual seat models (total 80) were upgraded to the current F-18 C and D standards. Today there are only 76 operational CF-188's in service. 20 have been lost in accidents with the 42 remaining being used for spare parts, training aids, donated to museums or sitting in storage awaiting disposal. Due to a severe lack of operational readiness of the current CF-188's in service, Canada has purchased 25 used F-18's from Australia, 18 for operational use and the remaining 7 for testing and spare parts. A new fighter competition is currently underway but the CF-188, due to political blundering, will not be replaced till around 2032
i had the same problems building the 20th aniversary hornet decals went not to bad with all the curve. great job over coming the problems makes you better
Beautiful work. There is a display case at M-C International in Ottawa with 2 CF-188's in it, one of them in this paint scheme. I immediately thought of this video when I saw it last week waiting to fly out. I believe they are the Kinetic kits but I could be wrong.
Superb job on this one! And to answer your question - I always loved that eagle themed Mi-24 Hind of the Hungarian Air Force, looks so nice and unique.
Nice build. With all the finicky decals involved I decided just to buy the Hobby Master diecast version of the model. However, I do have the Kinetic K48030 kit sitting on my self. Thanks for the tips on putting it together.
Awesome build !!!! I have one of these and it is being saved until I have a few more builds completed before I tackle it. Thanks for the tips much appreciated and Great Job !!!
The F/A-18 is my all time favorite jet. I just wish Tamiya would start producing them. That would be a dream come true. You did a great job on a troublesome kit.
The nice thing about this kit is the short comings are well documented so you know exactly what to expect. I still prefer it to the Hasegawa Bug. Meng is dropping a Super Hornet soon so I need to do my Hasegawa Super Bug before it's outdated!
First off, great job sticking with it. The finished Hornet looks amazing in red. I am starting work on the Kinetic F-16Sufa. So far as I can tell, all the parts are there. But stopped to try and get a Stuka done in time for a September show.
The Sufa is a nicely detailed kit but the main landing gear is a bit of a head scratcher. Did you find fit issues at the nose? I had to put some styrene in a few gaps to force the panels outwards to line up properly
Very nice build! I had the same problems with their F16c IDF in 1/72 scale. A lot of parts weren't numbered and also the decal sheet for the weapons were missing. They did however sent me a new sheet after sending an them an email though, which was really nice of them
Beautiful result. I find the Aboriginal painted Hornets stunning to look at, and damn near impossible to get right when building them (but the fun is in the making). Also love seeing the Tiger Meet aircraft
I've only just discovered your channel and videos and I can assure you, that your work is beautiful! definitely up there with the Inner nerd & Plasmo, will definitely be following your channel more. I'm soon to start my Tamiya 1/48 F-14D as Vf-213 black lions, as you were talking about those decals you used it sounded like they are like Tamiya and aren't the best decals, makes me want to build my Hasegawa 1/48 F/A-18E now, will be looking for a C model in future too. Again love your video well laid out, clear instructions and heads up etc, beautiful all together. Will definitely be eagerly awaiting for all your builds now. Cheers from little NZ!
My personal favorite show a/c is the 441 Sq CF 104 Checker Bird. Although I really like the 150 anniversary scheme. I also like the Battle of Britain scheme done a few years ago. Another nice build, but seeing how difficult the decalling was I do not think I will be building one for myself. I do not mind doing decals, but I am a lot ham fisted......
I’m about to build to 20th Anniversary livery CF188. This video was great for me. Btw even when they are on the show circuit the Canadian Hornets do get very dirty. As you said they are normal operating jets too between shows
Damn that red looks good on the hornet! Also I understand your pain about the decals.... I used this livery as a base and edited it in photoshop for a custom livery in DCS and although it’s not nearly as tedious as what you had to do here, I understand and appreciate it so much more. Great job!
Very nice build! Clean, simple and i like the background information. Got a new sub. The best demo Paint job for me was the dutch f16 demo team. The black and Orange lion were awesome. To bad they quited.
I brought this fa18/cf18 kit from kinetic models at an airshow in July, it’s a new tooling black or gold edition kit, from what I was being told the new tooling and revised editions are equivalent to TAMIYA it even comes with photo etch parts in the box too, but I must say the detail in it looks amazing! And I can’t wait to eventually start it when I’ve finished my 3 other projects😂
@@TheModelGuy I certainly will, I’m glad I came across your video! When I actually start it and build it up, I’ll come back and let you know If there’s any difference!
decalling has always been my favorite part of modeling, and having this on the stash, i just hope i enjoy doing it, (my plan is to build it in flight mode)
Watch the gear doors. I did the Kinetic Hawkeye in flight and the doors have quite a few gaps when closed. Also why it hangs in the kids room where it's not seen often lol
Great video. I'd love to build a CF-18 one of these days. As a fellow Canadian I agree, it's everyone else that says decal wrong. DEEcal just doesn't sound right to me! Keep up the great work with your channel.
@@TheModelGuy awesome. I look forward to your videos on that. I've got 2 1/48 Flankers and a 1/32 F-16 to get through and then maybe I'll see if I can find the Bug for a reasonable price somewhere.
Incredible job.....amazing details, especially the decals....congrats for persevering and completing a supermodel.....a difficult build with its many problems ending up to being a nice build.....must be a fine feeling of accomplishment so well done.
Thanks for this video. I have this kit with the standard decals, that came with the Auzzie, decals as well. I am just getting back into models after many years. I will keep this on the shelf for a bit, after seeing this video. Currently working on a mk1 spitfire from Tamiya, and I must say it went together like a charm. Just in primer stage now. Keep up the great videos, and I really like the commentary.👍
Greetings from the UK. I had similar fit problems with an Academy F111C, the section forward of the the rear of the cockpit refused to fit the rear fuselage. I had to fit alignment tabs to the rear in order that the flex in the main fuselage section would conform to the cockpit section, then use loads of filler(Perfect Putty) to achieve a level surface. That was weeks back and I'm still not satisfied with the panel line re-instatement, oh well I will get there eventually. BTW if my airbrush was throwing all those bubbles back into the colour cup I would give it a thorough strip-down and clean!
Wow -- that design looks good in those colors! The Canadian Maple Leaf is a nice, basic design which is why it adapts so well to different situations. 2 superheroes -- Captain Canuck and Guardian use the Canadian flag in their costumes --, and now this jet. I wonder what they will replace the F-18 with in Canada? Their jets are about as hard-used as the Legacy Hornets have been in US Navy service. The USN F-18 A-Ds were so hard-worked they had to be retired from carrier duty. They passed on the least-worn planes onto the US Marine Corps which was getting desperately short of serviceable fighter jets. I know Canada bought at least 24 used Australian F-18A+'s because those were in better condition than anything the USN had available to sell which is not much anymore...!
I'm quite fond of the Saab J35 Oe Draken in red with white stripe. It's a strange looking bird to begin with, like a rejected design for 1 of Anderson's Thunderbirds, even moreso in that paint scheme. Not only is the stripe quite difficult to place accurately, but it also has a rather challenging, large decal on the top surface which required significant amounts of soft and set to get it to conform properly. Odd looking though it may be, it's still one of my all-time favourite builds. Other than that, the Tiger Meet paint schemes applied to the British GR4 Tornadoes were usually very nice.
Nice job and video. Its a tricky kit to get looking nice and you sure did that! Liking the paint scheme, overall grey gets boring and repetitive. Keep it up!
Obviously they don’t have anyone to build a test model. I had the F16 and it went into the trash. After all your struggles, this looks really nice. Stay safe 🍻🌲 I’m partial to the 51 Tigers NATO Tiger panavia tornado.
I saw the NORAD 60 CF-18 and the 2016 liveried CF-18 at air shows here in California. I don’t think they were here in 2017, which would have been this one.
I'm not so fond of special/anniversary schemes... I do enjoy the three tones green, wrap around camouflage used by the Luftwaffe on their F-104s. Good result though with this red "mounted" Hornet! And cool sense of humour there at the end. :-)
Nice build. I'm iffy on weathering. I mostly weather (some) if it's a WWII aircraft... and, honestly, if I'm in the mood. So often I'm just looking at the color scheme and want a good example of it. Though if it's really interesting weathering, I may try to copy it. The kit... I don't know what's up with Kinetic. I've seen limited run kits with better attention paid to the instructions. There's so much that's just *vague* on top of incorrect in them. (Such as the tail stiffener plates on the PE.) And the fit - if they'd mold the refueling probe door closed with an option to cut it out if you want it, for one... I think the nose is the biggest area of problems with getting the major assemblies together. It's frustrating. (And yes, the intake trunking is another somewhat vague spot, too, that looks like it should "just fit" but doesn't.) A little more attention to detail on their part would go a long way. But, well, it's part of what modeling's all about - I do like your fix for the top/bottom fit issue, I've got a few of these kits lined up (building a B next, then other kits for later models, but I have SO MANY MARKINGS to do I'll be at it a while) that I'll keep that in mind. Edit: Also, seriously, people were giving you grief over how you pronounce decal? Yes, I'm American, yes, it sounds funny to me, but I've got friends who live up north of the border and we've had just general laughs over each others pronunciations. It's a big wide world. People say things differently. You "deckle" your way, I'll "Deecal" mine, and enjoy that there's people sharing in the hobby.
Thanks for your thoughts McCann, I have their new CF-104 kit and it is worlds above this one. I will give Kinetic credit that they are improving on their quality. I haven’t caught any errors yet on the kit and they are revisiting their F-16 with a new tooling. So I won’t give up on them yet. I did their older Tracker offline and yeah, it was simple, some errors but in the end looked decent enough. It was a lot of extra work though.
Beautiful job and a very striking paint scheme make this a highly unique (and challenging) model, well done! Only thing I noticed was a slight orange peel here and there, not sure if the camera angle was responsible or you found that to be the case... congrats on a gorgeous outcome!
There is a tiny bit in a few areas but even with two coats of clear on top, sanding quickly damaged the decals. I found the tamiya gloss colours were a bit more difficult to work with for an even coat.
Hi my friend Great work as always I will be making the same plane soon and I was wondering if you can make me some masks as you did for the white on yours Happy to pay 😄
Well im Going to be doing A F-14A in marine core marking's. after building model's over a couple decades like they are supposed to be done. Ive found that doing what if bird's is really fun cause you can do what ever you want.
When painting, best to go from lightest to darkest. And when dealing with large decals try cutting them into smaller, more manageable pieces. Also in regards to the multi part wheels, this is done to make painting easier. You can paint the tires and wheels separately, then glue them together without having to mask anything.
I was more concerned that cutting the larger decals would lead to issues lining them back together. As for painting, I do usually go light to dark, but on the red tails I was concerned of bleed through and painted them after they were already red. Turns out it was a non-issue
Do you reckon it's worth making this kit? I want to buy the after-market exhaust, weapons and intakes so I'll be spending a bit on it. Thank you for the video
Beautiful bug you ended up with, here. I recently bought one of these but in a different scheme with orange and black stripes. I assume there's no reason to think they've made any improvements since this one. Oh well. I also pronounce "decals" the way you do. I hate saying "deekals".
Awesome video, intact I’ll be using as ref to help me build my first CF-188 actually it be my first fixed wing aircraft. A quick question, what was the grey putty that you used at the beginning? Was it the Perfect Plastic Putty?
I got the kinetic 1/48 f18c which has Australia and Canada markings. This hornet I believe is the 2017 150 years markings also love your ideas to paint tiny details. This is old news but please tell me you play dcs f18 that module is nearing completion.
I was big into DCS until my computer started becoming out dated. I have to build a new one to get back into it, otherwise it's like watching a power point present.
@@TheModelGuy lol 😂 yea same I just did a new build in November Ryzen 7 5800x but I still have a outdated gpu 1060, anyway what is your opinion of kitty hawk models I have done su22-35 and I have the su34 sitting in not assembled. Kitty hawk starts off rough but I think they are really well done now but I’m a guy who also liked trumpeter/hobby boss, academy and iv heard those are not favored by Most. Kittyhawk has in the horizon a new ka-50 is-52 mi28 and su25 all of which I want.
@@TheCraigHudson I haven't built any of their kits. I have their SU-34 in the stash, waiting on some aftermarket stuff to arrive. I'm hoping to do it sooner then later. But from what I've read there are some issues that need to be addressed. One of the biggest being the joint at the fuselage to cockpit having a step
Generally that's a no. But Kinetic has released the CF-188 as a few different kits. But other than that I just hit up Leading Edge decals here in Calgary to get RCAF/RCN markings.
I have a quick follow up question about the Kinetic CF-18. I am just wrapping up the Meng Super Hornet and it's got me eager to build a CF-18. Aside from lining up the fuselage halves as you discuss in your video were there any other major issues you encountered?
Engine inlets need quite a bit of work. Next time I'd try glueing the inlet to the outer piece first instead of following the instructions. Maybe less clean up. And the windscreen/nose is a problem area as well. But I'd definitely build it again, I have two in the stash.
I don’t know why but hearing the word Scotland makes me so happy. It’s really weird cause I know I’m from there but I don’t think anyone else feels happy just hearing the name of the country they’re from 😂

Hi Robert. I have a 1/32 Canadian Bug that should hit the bench just after summer.
@@TheModelGuy I assume that's the Academy Kit? Definitely on my to-build list.
@@RobPearlman the same one Peri just did. I'm doing the NORAD 60 scheme though
@@TheModelGuy awesome. I look forward to your videos on that. I've got 2 1/48 Flankers and a 1/32 F-16 to get through and then maybe I'll see if I can find the Bug for a reasonable price somewhere.
Looks great! Hope to see a video on that NORAD one you mentioned!
Incredible job.....amazing details, especially the decals....congrats for persevering and completing a supermodel.....a difficult build with its many problems ending up to being a nice build.....must be a fine feeling of accomplishment so well done.
Thank you. It's made the model that much more meaningful with how much effort went into it
Thanks for this video.
I need to follow this up with a Tamiya build just to remember it's not all work!
That's my favorite livery, was lucky to see it twice in 2017
Отличная,аккуратная работа!!!мастера!!!
Great build and review my friend
Greetings from the UK. I had similar fit problems with an Academy F111C, the section forward of the the rear of the cockpit refused to fit the rear fuselage. I had to fit alignment tabs to the rear in order that the flex in the main fuselage section would conform to the cockpit section, then use loads of filler(Perfect Putty) to achieve a level surface. That was weeks back and I'm still not satisfied with the panel line re-instatement, oh well I will get there eventually. BTW if my airbrush was throwing all those bubbles back into the colour cup I would give it a thorough strip-down and clean!
I have an o-ring that's splitting. New one is back ordered. In the meantime I have a self-mixing cup :)
Perfect putty is my new favorite thing
Absolutely beautiful. I love the job you did. 👍👍nice touch with the weathering.
The 20th Anniversary RAAF is my favourite. Flown at the 2005 Avalon base in Victoria Australia. The Canadian is a beautiful hornet also.
Love your videos. I have been going thru them all.
I really like the way you painted the intakes. Great job on the hornet.
It makes things a bit easier...as long as the tape holds
Brand new Typhoon 2021 display team livery is absolutely wonderful
Beautifully done!👌🤙👍
Great build mate, that decal scheme looks a little crazy to apply, my personal opinion I'm not fussed on the colour scheme.
another fantastic build
Cool!!! I saw it really well. Have a nice day~
Excellent job.
great job on a challenging kit! Love the Red!
Nice job and video. Its a tricky kit to get looking nice and you sure did that! Liking the paint scheme, overall grey gets boring and repetitive. Keep it up!
I feel like I just had a celebrity run-in! I watched your build quite a few times to pick up any issues I would run into.
Thanks for your comment!
Obviously they don’t have anyone to build a test model. I had the F16 and it went into the trash.
After all your struggles, this looks really nice. Stay safe 🍻🌲
I’m partial to the 51 Tigers NATO Tiger panavia tornado.
Wait at 18:08 are you talking about the 2016 demo hornet? If so I saw it at Abbotsford doing about 1000kmh
Also I live near cold lake, might need to pick up one of these hornets but I think they’re around $100 CAD
I saw the NORAD 60 CF-18 and the 2016 liveried CF-18 at air shows here in California. I don’t think they were here in 2017, which would have been this one.
Thanks for the shout out about the decals!
Respect very nice painted looks fantastic, thumb up.
Very nice I like the history at the beginning
I would like to see someone issue the markings for some of the CF-101 Voodoo. Hawk One comes to mind.
That is a great-looking scheme!
I'm not so fond of special/anniversary schemes...
I do enjoy the three tones green, wrap around camouflage used by the Luftwaffe on their F-104s.
Good result though with this red "mounted" Hornet!
And cool sense of humour there at the end. :-)
My wife obviously hasn't watched this yet :)
(And yes, the intake trunking is another somewhat vague spot, too, that looks like it should "just fit" but doesn't.)
A little more attention to detail on their part would go a long way.
Thanks for your thoughts McCann,
I have their new CF-104 kit and it is worlds above this one.
Awesome ! Great work ! I now want to go out an build one ! Like that
I love hearing that! Glad you are motivated
The Model Guy I normally build 1/72 an 1/48 ww2 air craft but this is just way to beautiful An need one for my display case !
I like the Us Navy centennial of flight schemes...super cool imho
There have been some awesome liveries for the US Navy Centennial. The tricolour bug is a favourite
Hi my friend
Great work as always
I will be making the same plane soon and I was wondering if you can make me some masks as you did for the white on yours
Happy to pay 😄
Send me a message on Instagram or Facebook and we'll set it up
I would love to see some one do a what if Canada F-14 i wonder what it would have looked like if they ever got to purchase it.
We’d definitely still be flying them
Well im Going to be doing A F-14A in marine core marking's. after building model's over a couple decades like they are supposed to be done. Ive found that doing what if bird's is really fun cause you can do what ever you want.
@@Joe8648 that’s definitely a way to have fun. I saw an F-14 build last summer that was done as a Royal Navy bird that was really original.
@@TheModelGuy I'll bet that looked good.
It’s definitely the best 1/48 legacy hornet out there. I have two still to build.
@@TheModelGuy Thank you for your advice.
I have a CanadianF-18 Tiger meet Cold lake 2003 Rc turbine jet. Do you know where. I can get a plastic or die cast model?
This model is a real eye-catcher!
Excellent bug. You should do a tiger meet RCAF CF-18. One was. A subdued tiger stripe in the 90s.
I have the 2018 NORAD Bug in the stash. It would be cool to see the tigermeet livery.
@@TheModelGuy july 1991 tiger meet if you want to research it. Leading edge made a 1/48 decal sheet # 48.037
@@AreeyaKKC I can always use more Hornets haha
@@TheModelGuy im the same way with P-51s. Got 171 built so far. I wont be happy til i hit 1000
No it was tamiya putty thinned a bit with Mr Leveling Thinner
Kitty hawk starts off rough but I think they are really well done now but I’m a guy who also liked trumpeter/hobby boss, academy and iv heard those are not favored by
Most.
Have you found many models done with Canadian markings ?
Generally that's a no. But Kinetic has released the CF-188 as a few different kits. But other than that I just hit up Leading Edge decals here in Calgary to get RCAF/RCN markings.
@@TheModelGuy Thank you for the heads up on that . I am wanting to get into modeling and am trying to decide where to start
what about the blue camo colour scheme on the su-27
Lol I've watched like 4 videos of yours now an took me forever to understand you was saying decal just different than I've heard it.
You must be from the US? I’m from the east coast of Canada so I say things a bit differently
@@TheModelGuy yeah we're from Pennsylvania. Cool to hear other pronunciations from different areas of the world.
just ordered it, looks beautiful
Thank you! Enjoy your build :)
There is also Switzerland Swiss livery or Finnish livery Finland and Spain Spanish livery besides u.s. navy.
I wish I could find decals for the Tiger Meet of the Americas 2003 Hornet.
That is a ridiculously awesome livery.
The one scheme I would like to see in 1/32 is the 2003 CF-18 Tiger meet scheme, presently have the 20th anniversary by Kinetic...
That would be awesome.
Kinetic, are you reading this?? :)
Great job, especially with the decals. Who makes the splash stencil and who carries it?? Thanks in advance and keep the videos coming!!

305SQ JASDF 50th anniversary livery is the best painting I ever seen.
I don’t know why but hearing the word Scotland makes me so happy. It’s really weird cause I know I’m from there but I don’t think anyone else feels happy just hearing the name of the country they’re from 😂
Are you using the Mr. Surfacer 1200 as a sort of putty for fine cracks?
It's a primer but it does fill some of the micro scratches.
Are you in Calgary? I would like to meet with you.
I'm an hour outside of the city. But I'll be at the Nanton show and GOMBs his year if you want to say hi.

The 2015 paint scheme commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Brittain was the best.
