Well the animated clock you see on the virtual board only gets updated when the players press the actual clock, but the clock itself the person who is to move, their time starts ticking down, once they press the clock the other persons time starts ticking, and back and forth. If you run out of time you lose, unless your opponent does not have enough material to checkmate. Then it is a draw.

I believe they are using an increment time system, where every time they make a move and hot their clock, they earn a couple seconds. A popular increment time control is 3/2, meaning you start with three minutes, and gain 2 seconds each move. I am not sure what increment setting they are playing though.

If white knight defends then black swaps knights and gains pawn, and an A file queen, or white allows black to take c4 with the queen.
