I agree, when I use to play Tir was always our regular hangout, it just felt welcoming even though some of the larger towns are more impressive design-wise.
2009 returner here, it's an AFK spot, but I've actually managed to have some nice interactions with players. I wouldn't say it's a return to the old times but.. it's something.

I think this one may be my personal favorite
Some of the later towns are missing the depth of Tir Chonaill. You can tell they really put their all into this one.
