    My sister and her husband are on there 3rd Suburban (all 2WD) in the past 6 or 7 years (2 were totaled in rear end accidents) and I have come to really appreciate them. They drive pretty well, hold a lot of stuff, tow great (my BIL has towed full size pickups on a steel double axle trailer with no issues with the Vortec 5.7 equipped versions (the current one is a '05 with the 5.3) and get better gas mileage then you might think. I saw nearly 20mpg hwy in one of the 5.7 ;burbs.

    That 7.4 vortec is a cool engine for what it is. That intake is a real cool design. Long runners in there. Funny everyone gets wrapped around the HP numbers and over look the torque. My 13 Duramax with 370ish hp and 750 torque never leaves me wanting more. It’s the toque that’s pulling hills and get 20+ mpg not loaded. That 7.4 was meant to tow and get as good as mileage as possible. All those engines (5.7 and 7.4) could use a bit more cam. The LS series sort of swapped things around building max torque and hp on the right side of then graph. Can’t wait to see what you do to this Burb. Cool project!

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks! i do seem to have a thing for the overlooked engines, so I will probably take on the challenge of adding power to the 454, keeping the stock intake intact.

    We have a 1999 K2500 Suburban at work that I drive pretty much everyday. It's a black LT with the 454 and only 280,000 on the original engine and transmission. And it's like close to mint as one that is 21 years old could be. Love driving it but we hate putting gas in it.

    I have had a vision of a pretty similar build now for the last few years… let me explain a few of the reasons, some of which you already pointed out! First those suburbans do not get a great deal of attention from enthusiast, and they almost seem to just pass by forgotten and mostly ignored. They do have timeless, classic styling that ages every single day- but does so gracefully. The available big block powertrain with the 4L80 trans make these behemoths a viable option as an absolute workhorse- from pulling trailers to off-roading the option boxes that were checked will lend itself to the endgame here. Something that is often overlooked about these Suburbans though is the level of comfort that they offer, even in the 3/4 ton variety! I recall being younger and riding on long road trips in these things and I never can recall trying to find a way to make myself comfortable- the comfort was just kind of there. Furthermore, if one was wanting to build an overland rig of some sort I believe this would be an absolute stud in that area! The 7.4 is very reliable when properly maintained… they do have a bit of a drinking problem, but they are otherwise a very sound choice for transportation for most any time that duty calls.
    My vision is to use a Suburban, equipped fairly similar to yours, to pull my Willys Jeep out to the desert and enjoy some random trail riding. If my Willys does decide to fail me??? I have a very capable recovery rig of my own to collect it and return to base. Something like this, even in big block form, could serve me well in a daily driver scenario (I commute less than 5 miles a day). And during hurricane season I can think of no better option to utilize if I need to take a crew of rescuers into the field to perform any type of rescue operations. I have thought it through and justified it to myself in each and every way possible… now, I just have to put my money together long enough to get a sound example and jump on it!
    With all that being said? I am glad you made the choice that you did and hope to keep up with this project closely until it’s completion! I am late to the game, however that gives me a backlog of content to enjoy in the meantime!

But I got the Chevrolet performance timing cover with the cam sensor and crank sensor, and the L21 big block coil near plug valve covers to convert over to LS coils and sequential injection. I have a 97 and I have been looking for someone to explain how to tune one of these in its original configuration. I have been wanting to put a turbo on the original equipment and maintain my cruise and all the accessories. Everything I have read says, due to the lack of aftermarket support, you can't and you have to do a 0411 swap or go to a carburetor/aftermarket EFI. I look forward to seeing you walk us through this process. I know there will be thousands more interested too. I'll definitely be sharing this on the GMT400 FB Page. Thanks for what you do.

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure thing! I believe the 96 and 97 have no flash tuning support, but a 0411 swap is not that difficult. If you have the L31 5.7 the next challenge you’ll have is getting larger injectors in...

    Hi LT I have the same thing basically Mine is a 1999 GMC K2500 SLT I have a 7.4 Gen6 that was rebuilt in 2013 & started in January 2014 now 460 cubes & yeah I spent alot on it stock heads with as big of valves as possible screw in studs totally massaged ports & valve valve bowls & guide plates Crowler roller rocker 17-4SS , Custom Hydraulic Roller Comp Cam ,Forged pistons - 11.1 comp, ARP everything engine dyno at 435HP & 530 torque In the truck running reprogramed computer Hooker Truck Force headers 2 3" in 4.5" tail pipe I have maybe 10000 miles on it I run premium fuel with Octane booster in It doesn't like 91 premium Royal Purple makes the Octane Booster . So heres my Big? What does a nice clean body - frame cost down there ?? I live in Minnesota - Rust Capital of the World I like where are going with your Suburban ! To put a solid axle under it is going to be lifting it up at least 6 to 8" onless you really cut into the crossmember really like to see how this goes . I really like my motor & would be nice in a 69 Nova but I like trucks so we shall see what plays out . If I came down there to your part of the US I'd like know what it would take to find a clean body truck - frame . Ultimately love to find 98,99, 2000 K3500 Crew Cab Long Box 4 x4 don't care if motor is blown or not because I have Gen 6 460 cube to put into it ! This was a cool video but the scenery of the area was icing on the cake! We have a ‘97 Chevy 2500 Suburban, 454/4L80 w/4:10 gears. The only complaint about this particular 454 is the distributor. Replacing the Cap & Rotor was a real treat. Anyone know if older valve covers from a late ‘60’s - early ‘70’s 396,427 or 454 would be the same bolt pattern by any chance? I had the PCM reprogrammed to eliminate the speed limiter (100) & the Transmission shifting to now where it feels like an old school Turbohydramatic with a shift kit. Plus a off road type Y-Pipe for now to help with breathing, and maybe headers later on down the road, but the original stainless exhaust is still in excellent condition.

      Kudos on the Project truck, Seems like the L29 spirits got ahold of you as well. Grew up around many 1500 5, 6 lug SuBurbans but dreamed of the 8 lug suburban. I’ve been working on my “I-Rex” 99 K2500 Z82 Suburban with a 6” lift 35” tire setup for about 6 months now. Im feeding the L29 with a Snorkel fed custom air box into a 102mm adapted throttle body, ported manifold fresh Ignition tuneup and out a JBA shorty manifolds and cats (Cali) to a 3” dual In/Out Magnaflow turndown setup. Cam, springs and black box/411 tuning is the next step. Best of luck to you and your build. Check out Richard Holdener 454 videos for some inspiration for the engine build. Oh and my guess for your build or my alternate reality would be a slammed K2500 Dually rear converted, air-Ride Suburban with a 700hp built L29. 🔧👍🏽🔧
